The Odyssey (2026) Trailer

This thread got me to dust off my copy of Troy: Director's Cut on HD-DVD.
I got about an hour in last night, and it's much more enjoyable than I remember. There's a solid cast (for the most part), great music, sets, and action. There's even some (gasp) female nudity and Braveheart-style ultraviolence.
Really looking forward to finishing it. Much more brutal than I recall - I guess I must have only seen the theatrical cut up to this point.

The Odyssey is one of the most important works of Western Civilization. It shouldn't be treated so lightly and in such a revisionist manner. Batman was given more respect to the source material than this. Batman.

Every piece of news inches it closer to Rings of Power territory.

The Odyssey being one of the most important works of Western Civilization is precisely why it was deconstructed. Like I mentioned in a previous post, it is not just a great adventure story, it provides the basis for cultural norms. All things Western must be torn down and re-written.

The good thing about everything made today being the hottest of garbage is that you learn to appreciate older movies that weren't the best of the best.

Since i completely stopped watching new movies i've discovered so much entertaining stuff from the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

Stuff that may have flown under the radar but is still highly entertaining.

I also enjoy a lot of movies that didn't really catch me Back in the day.

Troy was great. I just hated how Orlando Bloom gets away at the end. Great fight. Best part was Pitt dragging away the body and he looks up at the crowd. lol

Awesome sound effects too. I dont care how fake it is.

Dude is getting absolutely blasted. There's no way he or the studio haven't heard about this. Wonder if they're nervous.

My only guess is this is the initial shot and when Odysseus wakes up the fog clears and it shows the beautiful beach and azure blue sea.

When this shit gets viral on youtube and then on x and facebook - movie studios starts shitting their pants.

I wonder if this movie will flop or not, Nolan name bring people to cinemas but all this drama (created by Nolan and the movie studio) will certainly pull a lot of folks away.

Eric Bana was so good in Troy, really strong choice to play Hector. I remember thinking he was going to be a big star, but it didn't quite work out that way.

Agreed. He was in some big stuff in the 2000s. I googled why. I dont know how accurate it is, but AI says he purposely chose private life and low key stuff than big Hollywood blockbusters. Might be a BS answer cobbled together from the net. Who knows.

I don't really see it flopping, do you? I mean the average movie goer isn't terminally online like we are. All this bullshit definitely doesn't help, but I think the movie would have to get middling reviews and mid/bad word of mouth from audiences too in order to flop or underperform. Nolan's a big name.

But this shit spills into the mainstream now, a lot of "normies" also know about this stuff right now. And who isn't online these days? Half of the population (or something) have very high smartphone usage.

Troy (2004) is one of the better examples of "Perhaps I treated you too harshly" we have in cinema. I remember that film was heavily criticized when it released, but I guess we didn't know how good we had it.

It's possible. I'm not sure Matt Damon himself is a huge draw, the topic/setting is traditionally a hard sell (Gladiator 2 did 460 mill worldwide), and all I'm seeing is negative PR online, which ain't great. Obviously Oppenheimer was a pretty big rabbit to pull out of his hat, but I'm not sure how much that film will translate to this one, though I'm sure the PR machine will kick up in a few more weeks. 250mill budget, plus another 150 mill PR or so at least, and Universal has to clear 800 mill worldwide to break even. Certainly doable, but not a guarantee unless they get a nice clear 3-4 weeks at theaters to rule.

I always really liked it and didn't understand the criticism. I watch it every time they play it on tv.

Oppenheimer also had big boost from Barbie meme (and vice versa).

I think some of it had to do with pretty boys Pitt and Bloom starring in it.

If the movie was the exact same but had more gritty Eric Bana kind of guys doing the parts it would had reviewed better.

Maybe but I think opening weekend for The Odyssey will probably still be big. The people who really wanna see it are gonna go and see it. But I think if wom is mediocre/bad, then I think a ton of people who were undecided on the film based on the trailers and internet commotion or gonna pass on it.

It came out in a time of Gladiator, Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, but even then it is unreal how back when Troy came out it was widely considered B-tier trash, but if you watch the movie now (be sure to watch the extended edition) it is multiple orders of magnitude better than pretty much anything that has come out in the last 5, maybe even 10 or so years.

Lambasted for having Orlando Bloom as Paris (great casting in hindsight because he was perfect as the somewhat dimwitted naive pretty boy) and people were actually upset at Brad Pitt the pretty boy playing Achilles, but his casting was perfect. PERFECT. Pure testosterone, his performance elevates the entire movie.

This shot alone gets my blood pumping:

Never knew there was an extended directors cut of Troy till this thread. I have old DVD of the standard version. Googling it, there's only a BR version of directors cut. No 4k version either, not even theatrcial version.

Yeah even at the time throughout all the criticism, I found myself shrugging and thinking "I like this?"

I think it's a great movie. The only thing about it I hate is when Achille's cousin is killed, both armies decide to stop fighting and return to their camps. Like "oh no, look what happened! So sad." I feel like neither side would care, if anything the Greeks would be fired up even more and keep attacking.

The large battles in troy look amazing, I think they forked out money for extras instead of CGI crap.

The scene with peter o'toole in the tent with Achilles is brilliant. Superb film

I saw Troy in theatres twice, but I was 15 and later heard people didn't like it, so just chalked it up to me being 15 and dumb or something. Maybe I should give it a re-watch too!

extended BR is like $15 on amazon, tempted to throw it into my next order if it isn't streamable anywhere.

I can only imagine the scene where Achilles gets the offer "come with me for an early death but fame eternal, or die an old man, content....oh, BTW, if you pick choice 1 in 3000 years you will be represented by a bitter little lady who thinks she is a man".

I'm tempted too. Amazon and Best Buy have it for about $25 CDN. I dont order much stuff online, but next time I do I might add it.

June 6, 1944. Dog Green sector, Omaha beach.

And that's why they want to destroy it.

Counterproductive, surely? I mean, this has already prompted me to order a sincere translation on the basis of "Oh yeah, now you mention it I've never actually read it and I should!" These modern (read malcontent, amateurish) treatments only ever underscore the quality of the source material and invite people to seek out better fare.

For example, here's a summary of the various prior versions that are knocking around...

...I'll be checking out one or two of those in due course too.

I'm going to be neck-deep in The Odyssey, and all because of a version I'm not going to bother to go and watch. If this is an attempt to destroy it then it is not going well.

Huh, I never heard about the directors cut. I bought it a few years ago just to have it in my collection, and luckily it is the directors cut. Gonna watch that tomorrow for sure.

It's also pretty cool that the film is done by Wolfgang Petersen, who also did Das Boot back in the day.

Anyone read the Stephen Fry novelization(?)/adaptation/study? He has 4 books on greek myths.

Is he the Top Gear guy?
The actor and comedian. He plays the guy protecting the Quran in V For Vendetta.

He came out in favor of arresting people for "causing offense" through words recently, despite being a comedian and previously campaigning against blasphemy laws in Scotland.

Stephen Fry? Really?? He's famous for the statement below:

"It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."

Unfortunately yes, he's now on the side of the UK police imprisoning people for mean tweets. Check his recent appearance on Triggernometry if you're curious. Disappointing. Regardless, there are much better scholars of Greek Mythology out there.

In other news, it really speaks to how nonsensical the casting for this film is when you can walk down the street in Manhattan and spot dozens of random girls who would make for a great Helen.
