This thread got me to dust off my copy of Troy: Director's Cut on HD-DVD.
I got about an hour in last night, and it's much more enjoyable than I remember. There's a solid cast (for the most part), great music, sets, and action. There's even some (gasp) female nudity and Braveheart-style ultraviolence.
Really looking forward to finishing it. Much more brutal than I recall - I guess I must have only seen the theatrical cut up to this point.

The Odyssey is one of the most important works of Western Civilization. It shouldn't be treated so lightly and in such a revisionist manner. Batman was given more respect to the source material than this. Batman.

Every piece of news inches it closer to Rings of Power territory.

The Odyssey being one of the most important works of Western Civilization is precisely why it was deconstructed. Like I mentioned in a previous post, it is not just a great adventure story, it provides the basis for cultural norms. All things Western must be torn down and re-written.

The good thing about everything made today being the hottest of garbage is that you learn to appreciate older movies that weren't the best of the best.

Since i completely stopped watching new movies i've discovered so much entertaining stuff from the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

Stuff that may have flown under the radar but is still highly entertaining.

I also enjoy a lot of movies that didn't really catch me Back in the day.

I wonder if this movie will flop or not, Nolan name bring people to cinemas but all this drama (created by Nolan and the movie studio) will certainly pull a lot of folks away.

Agreed. He was in some big stuff in the 2000s. I googled why. I dont know how accurate it is, but AI says he purposely chose private life and low key stuff than big Hollywood blockbusters. Might be a BS answer cobbled together from the net. Who knows.

I'm not sure Matt Damon himself is a huge draw, the topic/setting is traditionally a hard sell (Gladiator 2 did 460 mill worldwide), and all I'm seeing is negative PR online, which ain't great. I always really liked it and didn't understand the criticism. I watch it every time they play it on tv.

I think some of it had to do with pretty boys Pitt and Bloom starring in it.

If the movie was the exact same but had more gritty Eric Bana kind of guys doing the parts it would had reviewed better.

Maybe but I think opening weekend for The Odyssey will probably still be big. The people who really wanna see it are gonna go and see it. But I think if wom is mediocre/bad, then I think a ton of people who were undecided on the film based on the trailers and internet commotion or gonna pass on it.

Lambasted for having Orlando Bloom as Paris (great casting in hindsight because he was perfect as the somewhat dimwitted naive pretty boy) and people were actually upset at Brad Pitt the pretty boy playing Achilles, but his casting was perfect. PERFECT. Pure testosterone, his performance elevates the entire movie.

Yeah even at the time throughout all the criticism, I found myself shrugging and thinking "I like this?"

I think it's a great movie. The only thing about it I hate is when Achille's cousin is killed, both armies decide to stop fighting and return to their camps. Like "oh no, look what happened! So sad." I feel like neither side would care, if anything the Greeks would be fired up even more and keep attacking.

I saw Troy in theatres twice, but I was 15 and later heard people didn't like it, so just chalked it up to me being 15 and dumb or something. Maybe I should give it a re-watch too!

These modern (read malcontent, amateurish) treatments only ever underscore the quality of the source material and invite people to seek out better fare.

Huh, I never heard about the directors cut. I bought it a few years ago just to have it in my collection, and luckily it is the directors cut. Gonna watch that tomorrow for sure.

It's also pretty cool that the film is done by Wolfgang Petersen, who also did Das Boot back in the day.
