1 month until two week Olympic break =) I plan to stay home and not go outside. Why? Because VANOC had a horrible ticket selling system and I got nothing =( I hope I can get into Colbert's show at least.
Any idea when/where they're selling tickets?

I'll be up in Whistler during the games if anybody wants to meet up and catch a few drinks when I'm not working.

I am going to watch so much curling. Awesome.
I'm assuming that is a joke. But it is an interesting sport.

The Winter Olympics has some great events:
-Hockey
-Downhill Skiing
-Giant Slalom
-Figure Skating
-Luge
-Biathlon
-Ski Jumping
-Moguls
-Snowboarding

Checking the site, it looks like they already sold the tickets but I think it was before he announced he'd be here... So I assume it's mostly New Yorkers who bought the tickets and we'll be lining up in the cold?

Also, anyone find it ironic that we haven't had any snow this season even though even friggin' Flordia has snow? Nice time for the Olympics.

Nah, i'm sure they gave tix away in a lottery after it was announced it would be in Vancouver so it won't be New Yorkers travelling across the continent for a TV show lol

Winter Olympics are so good that even curling becomes awesome.

The success of these Olympics will be based on one sport, hockey. Really cant wait.

Fact: No hosting city (business or otherwise) has ever made a profit from the Olympics. Every hosting city has gone into major debt to do so.

My question is, if that's true, why do cities rush to host the next Olympics ?

Profit isn't a black and white thing. Hosting a succesful Olympics is worth so many millions in marketing for the city and country.

Two days ago, I went curling for the first time in three years. I might actually watch.

Anyone else sad that CTV is doing the games this year and not CBC? I just am so used to CBC being my Stanley Cup and Olympics channel =(

I just finished watching the men's long program at Canada's nationals...holy hell, does Vaughan Chippeur jump big. Not a medal contender...but wow.

Harper's already on his Olympic break.

It's sad. CTV is wreaking havoc on the Canadian media landscape, and demanding money from each and everyone one of us. ("Save Local TV" my ass, they just want a bailout for bad decisions.)

I am still thoroughly pissed off about it. I honestly think it is going to be a disaster. I imagine that their coverage will be closer to NBC's than the CBC's. I loved the recaps with Williams or Ron.

Yeah, I remember only finding out when I walked by CTV's offices downtown around Robson and Burrard and seeing the huge Olympics logo and being so confused. I really prefer public tv for my news and sports so that's part of it. I'm less than fond of our media companies. Honestly though, I see no way that CBC could possibly win against them in a bidding war. Next I see CBC losing the Stanley Cup =/ Assholes at CTV already took the HNIC theme away from them.

I actually prefer the winter olympics to the summer ones. I am going to dust off my HD tuner card and download some events cause I will be in class during many of the events. Either that, or I will watch them in HD online. I assume the set up will be the same as the summer olympics on NBC.com?

Geeze, I guess Curling is fun to watch when you don't have it on TSN all the fucking time pre-empting shows you actually watch like Pardon the Interruption.......grrrr, not a fan of curling at all

Ok, we like to make jokes about Americans lack of geography skills, but come on now. Look at a map. Vancouver is closer to Las Vegas than it is to Anchorage. Hell, it's probably closer to Phoenix, Arizona.
WTF are you on about? So what if Vancouver is close to Las Vegas, I didn't say it wasn't. My geography skills are just fine, and probably put me in the 95th+ percentile among Americans. I was just pointing out that this will probably be the closest ANY form of the Olympics gets to where I currently live, and it would be nice to be able to go if I had the money. All I said was that Alaska is only a 3.5 hour flight from Vancouver, or if I was brave a 3 day drive, nothing about Las Vegas or Phoenix.

Gold medal in Men's Hockey or death!

Actually, that was CBC being stupid and cheap and deciding not to renew their license or whatever to use the song.

Ski Jump is obligatory.. so are freestyle jumps and moguls, and perhaps some downhill/slalom. Speed skating is pretty good and biathlon is always a must.

Winter Olympics clearly the superior Olympics. Snowboarding, Skiing, speed skating, bobsleigh, hockey, curling...

Bring it.

Why would you assume it's a joke? This whole thread is practically the official curling thread. No, believe it or not, I am really going to watch as much curling as is possible for me to do and still keep my job. Thankfully I get CBC, I'm counting on them to show a lot. :D

The only thing I don't like about the inukshuk is that it isn't really representative of BC. Logo should have been BC centric and not Northern specific.

They already have their "olympic torch" representing BC quite well...

Guess you didn't get the memo that CBC isn't broadcasting the Olympics this year ? CTV is the official broadcaster here in Canada.

and somebody need to explain the curling rules to me so I can get onboard the curling hype train !

I wish Canada didn't suck so much as supporting its athletes. Lots of other governments will give them the resources they need, but Canada's notoriously stingy. If we don't do well at the Olympics, we know why.

curling :lol

I am a Canadian (almost :D ) but still I have no idea why Canadians love this game. It's just marble on ice. Heck marble is a lot more interesting. And those marbles are actually pretty

Dummy version...
4 players - 2 rocks each
Each rock that you have closer than the oponent to the button (center) gives you a point. You play 10 ends or until you're getting beat so badly you give up and if you loose an end you go second the following end.

The interesting strategical part of it is in getting a rock of yours close to the middle, but then trying to block the competitor from knocking it out. You can't play offense without defense, at least not until the end of the round.

I posted my pair of Men's Hockey (Canada vs. USA) tickets for sale in the Fan-to-Fan marketplace... for $3000. :lol (Pricing reflective of the fact that I wouldn't be sad if they don't sell...)
You are heartless.

CTV bid 50% more than CBC was willing to spend. They figured they could get away with that by charging very high rates for advertising. They didn't figure a recession into the plans, and now they're deep in the hole on the Olympics.

I'm still upset about what CTV did to Citytv.

Alaska is beautiful but it's very strange how it's such a prime destination for Americans while the whole of Canada is ignored. America self-promotes its own territory, which is understandable, but it's just a line on the map. The Yukon and BC has amazing wilderness too... no interest in seeing that? If not- you're not the only one... I usually see Americans beelining through Canada on their way to Alaska, stopping in Wal-Mart parking lots in their RVs then quickly moving on, and it's all a bit strange to me. The US dollar would usually go a long way here too...

Alaska's also so far from Vancouver it's not even funny. It's like saying "Hey Beijing is hosting the 2008 Olympics! I wish I could go... it's much closer to Japan!" WTF?

While I don't particularly have a lot of faith in CTV, I'm glad CBC lost it cause the last few were just shit. Terrible broadcasts!

I find it more and more difficult to watch HNIC as well. I know it's Canadian and should be somewhat Canadian-centric, but fuck! I'd prefer analysis and stats, and not so much time telling us how good the Canadians are and how every team has a Canadian, and where they grew up, and how they got into hockey, etc etc etc.

TSN, Sportsnet, have more analysis on the actual game going on in their broadcast and don't muck it up with Cherry going off about Canadian soldiers. It's not that I don't want to recognize the sacrifice, but isn't there a more appropriate time for it?

And, while I love Bob Cole's voice, he can't call a hockey game worth shit.
