By the way, the snowboard guy jumping through the rings at the start was pretty cool.
Yes it was, but then he started talking. It was the cheesiest announcer voice ever and ruined the awesome moment just a second before. The whole show was like this, show something cool then completely fuck it up by following it with something dumb.

I thought the worst part of the whole thing was the music arrangements. Every song was played so damn slow. The lyrics became a drone that was putting me to sleep.

I emailed my affiliate, I hope you do the same.

Its not just tonight, they're planning on having EVERYTHING tape delayed for us. And only hockey and curling will be online legally.

It's retarded.

Anyway, the stage/lighting thing was great. The whales especially were awesome. Too bad about the mechanical error....but meh, shit happens. It's not a big deal, it would have been a disaster if it were a single cauldron.
Curling will be on CNBC and USA ect. I don't mind missing the figure skating but want to see some of the other "primetime" stuff. I'll be emailing my local affilate too but would love a national address to email :<

What if it the weather stays shit and things keep having to get delayed. Can the games go longer than 17 days? Do events just get cancelled outright after a certain point? The weather is going to be a big issue here.

congratulations.

You just gave 5 Vanoc directors heart attacks.

Oh shit, I just check and damn you're right. Everything but hockey and curling are tape delayed. NBC gloats about showing the Olympics on all of their sister networks, yet the only other events being shown on these other networks are hockey and curling.

I think the forth torch pole was tape delayed by NBC. It popped up 3 hours later.

Another amazing song that captures "Canada" and would have been epic for the OC........

Tragically Hip - Giftshop
This made me think about why they wouldn't select a song like this.

Because it's not generic enough. Not accessible enough. Same with The Arcade Fire. That kind of music simply would not work with an international audience across all ages.

We could have put together a better show; in terms of ideas, I mean. But then you'd have the world's mainstream, and old people generally, tuning out.

So instead, they went safe. They chose visual gimmicks that placate and please, even if they manage to confuse and fail to represent.

I wish NBC were so powerful.

Nah, the 4th pole blew its load early when it saw Nelly Furtado.......

Just got back from Heineken House. I was really disappointed with the openning ceremonies. Half the shit went on for fucking ever. The one number with the lone 10 year old looking dude hanging on wires and shit was absolutely slow and idiotic. The bearded fat man doing his speech/poetry was fucking ridiculous. Why do we need some no name guy do this bit? Give it to fucking Donald Sutherland or something. I am really upset that Betty Fox was no where in the picture and that Wayne was the last person with it. BC born should be a requirement to do the final thing. Also, why the fuck is the cauldron not outside? WTF is it doing in a place no one will ever visit? I also didn't like how Furlong barely looked up during his little speech. You have had 7 years to prepare for this moment, memorize a fucking 2 minute speech please.

EDIT: Also about KD Lang. I thought she sang quite well but are you telling me that we are sending out KD Lang for our biggest musical number? Come on. We needed a bit more star power in that role.

The external cauldron is the real one, the indoors one has already been put out

Good to know. The Heineken house was only showing a Dutch feed so I couldn't understand anything at all.

I dont have cable, but if you find a national email, Ill send one to them too anyway. It's bullshit.

How often are the olympics held in your time zone? Every 20+ years, and NBC fucks it up.

We also get "US Sports" on broadcast here, which is owned by NBC, but instead of airing olympic coverage....they will just air highlights!

And Telemundo is owned by NBC but I dont see any coverage on that channel.

I hate NBC.

You know who was missing from this ceremony?

Fucking Rush man. How do you bring out KD Lang but not Rush? That's just criminal Canada.

Wayne Gretzky looked like his knees were going to explode at any moment.

A 12 minute Neil Pert solo with all the projectors doing their thing would have been insanely epic.

Did they have to do 'Hallelujah'?

Anyway, the real fun starts in not too long. Ski Jumping and then downhill! But it gets better, biathlon is the highlight of the day I think. Moguls is too late at night for me to watch.

Hi, guys. I'm lttp. Still remember how much fun we had during the Beijing games. I hope China will get more golds this time. But those are some strange names on the event list. WTF is curling??? Anyways, wake me up when Ping Pong and Diving start. :D

Also, not to pile on, but they even messed up O'Canada. It's one of the greatest national anthems and there is no need to fuck with it. Instead they had to go the route some singers go with the Star Spangled Banner and "hip" it up.

They had me going with the whales and the ice floes, but after that it was all downhill.

VASTLY underrated. I love watching all the cross-country events - the sprints at the end of races are sometimes incredible.

Curling is one of the most entertaining sports to watch. I love all the strategy involved.

I agree. Watching Sandra Schmirler in the 1998 debut of Olympic curling got me hooked on the sport. It is crazy how much strategy is involved in world class curling.

On the other hand I'm convinced that whipping the stone down the ice at top speed directly at the opposing stones would solve most problems.:D

I if i were Gretzky i would have gone to one of the other 3 people and helped them light the fire. I mean, he will probably be haunted or people would at-least think he will be haunted by not being able to light the fire.

It would even been better if they had gotten like 20 workers out there who pulled the cauldron up manually. I mean, this was the worst opening ceremony i have ever watched (seen like 5).

Also, it was terrible with 4 lighters. It should be 1 like always. Yeah, sure its more fair with letting them all light it, but seriously its an easy way out. The only thing that could have made it even more fail would be if there were like 20 people lighting the fire.

Half of the point is the speculations, criticism and everything of who got to light the fire.

The NBC situation: NBC has no real control over their affiliates. By agreement, all they can actually program is prime time and late night. If NBC actually owned all their stations, they'd likely have wall-to-wall coverage, but they don't. The locals would rather air Judge Judy.

The whales swimming was the highlight of the show. So well done. Worst part that not many people mentioned was the opera singer singing the olympic anthem or something. By far the worst singing voice ever. It was so awkward.

Man this sucks. I'm not following too closely but the only Olympics coverage on right now is Universal HD (which I had never heard about before) and that's just a preview show.

Janne Ahonen better win the ski jumping gold somehow. This is his 5th olympic games and just look at his merit list:
- 5 world championship gold medals
- Most podium positions of all jumpers (108)
- Most world cup points of all jumpers
- Longest jump in the world (fell on landing): 240 m (Planica 2005)
- World Cup: 36 victories, 44 second places, 28 third places
- Summer Grand Prix: 5 victories, 6 second places, 2 third places
- Six consecutive victories (ties the record with Matti Hautamäki, Thomas Morgenstern and Gregor Schlierenzauer)
...Yet he has never won a personal olympic medal. :(

Know what was seriousely the best part of the opening ceremony? That intro by CTV. I never felt more proud to be Canadian than at that moment. I even got a bit choked up with pride.

Let me see if I can find it...

I dunno man. He is the true battler, but it really depends on the day and who steps up to the plate both mentally and physically.

Man I can't find it anywhere. ctvolympics.ca has removed the opening ceremony video (why? I don't know why. Maybe to edit out shots from near the end with the torch lighting) and youtube has nothing yet.

Anyone else that's maybe better at searching looking?

8 years ago everybody expected Malysz to win, but it was Amman who won both competitions.
It's time for a reversal!

on CTV, they are announcing stuff about the Luge track maintenance and stuff.

this sounds fubar... + you got the mild weather

Looks like they are moving the men down to the women's starting house so they can't get up to 90MPH and putting up a wall to cover up the steel posts.

Sanity prevails.

Yeah, you never know what happens. But I'm rooting for Ahonen since he basically made a comeback this year just to compete in Vancouver.

Yeah, it was awesome up until the part where they say Patrick Chan looks like a 'Winged God' lmao. I couldn't hold it in then. The rest of it was ace though.

I fell asleep after the slam poetry. Sounds like it was for the best for the debacle that happened afterward. I have it on PVR for the west feed, but now I'm afraid and ashamed as a Canadian to watch the mechanical failure. :/
