Gran Turismo(TM)4 Captures Automotive History With More Than 700 Cars Supported With a Diverse 'Race-Tuned' in-Game Soundtrack for the Highly Anticipated Release on Playstation(R)2
Encompassing More Than 80 Manufacturers Worldwide and More Than 60 Tracks of
Music, Gran Turismo 4 Breaks All Videogaming Boundaries

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today the vast list of drivable vehicles and the in-game soundtrack for Gran Turismo(R)4, available now exclusively for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment. Featuring more than 700 different vehicles from more than 80 manufacturers worldwide and 64 songs from 46 established and emerging artists, Gran Turismo 4 sets the lap pace as the most authentic and comprehensive racing videogame experience possible to date. For the complete car and soundtrack list, visit gt4.playstation.com.

Developed by Polyphony Digital Inc., the automotive library in Gran Turismo 4 captures automotive culture since its inception, from historically significant vehicles such as the 1915 Ford Model T Tourer and Mercedes-Benz' 1886 Daimler Motor Carriage, to numerous legendary muscle cars and vehicles from the '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s,'90s and popular cars of today, as well as modern day concept cars. As the primary goal of the Gran Turismo franchise to serve as a realistic driving simulation, the characteristics of each car
featured in the game is designed and calculated so that it handles to the "real-life" physics of its real-life counterpart, taking into account weight, speed, friction, wind, and more. In addition, each car is fully customizable in the game, from tire selection to gear ratio and more, offered from various licensed automotive companies.

"We are very proud to offer the most comprehensive list of cars to drive and experience in Gran Turismo 4, coupled with a unique soundtrack that can be set to all drivers' moods -- from popular artists such as The Donnas to James Brown, to even Mozart," said Susan Nourai, director, product and online marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

"The Gran Turismo franchise is a labor of love for our team and this passion is demonstrated through the high level of detail that can be seen and experienced in the game. During the development of Gran Turismo 4, we set out across the globe to capture various amounts of data for each car featured in the game to set the player on a journey to discover the essence of the automotive world."

The complete list of manufacturers found in Gran Turismo 4 are as follows: AC Cars, Acura, Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Amuse, ASL, Aston Martin, Audi, Autobianchi, Bentley, Blitz, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Callaway, Caterham, Chaparral, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroen, Cizeta, Daihatsu, DMC, Dodge, Eagle, Fiat, Ford, FPV, Gillet, Ginetta, HKS, Holden, Hommell, Honda, HPA Motorsports, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jay Leno, Jensen, Lancia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lister, Lotus, Marcos, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, MG,
Mine's, MINI, Mitsubishi, Mugen, Nike, Nismo, Nissan, Opel, Opera Performance, Pagani, Panoz, Pescarolo, Peugeot, Plymouth, Polyphony Digital, Pontiac, Pronto Motors, RE Amemiya, Renault, RUF, Saleen, Scion, Seat, Shelby, Spoon, Spyker, Subaru, Suzuki, Tommy kaira, Tom's, Toyota, Toyota Modellista, Trial, Triumph, TVR, Volkswagen and Volvo.

The in-game soundtrack includes legendary musicians and chart-topping performances, as well as groundbreaking new songs that will rock the music scene in 2005. In addition, the soundtrack will also feature seven custom tracks, made exclusively for the game, that fans will not be able to hear anywhere else. Some of the hottest artists in the industry have contributed new and custom music to the collection, including Van Halen, The Crystal
Method, Will.I.Am of The Black Eyed Peas, The Roots, The Donnas, Papa Roach, Jimmy Eat World, X-ecutioners, and Jet.

"We're excited that Sony has chosen to use Deepsky's mix of our song 'Born Too Slow' in Gran Turismo 4. It's a driving, upbeat track so it should be good music for racing. It's great that videogames have become a way for new fans to find out about our music," said Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method.

Classic music from Bootsy Collins, Judas Priest, Earth, Wind & Fire, and James Brown have been updated and customized, bringing a new twist to quintessential songs.

"Exposure for me is the key for our sound to be heard all across the nation and our look to be the bridge between the gap, so Gran Turismo 4 is a great way for us to say hey guys enjoy the ride and remember that we are riding with you to ensure complete insanity and fun for the whole family," said Bootsy Collins.

Following in the footsteps of the PlayStation 2 "Greatest Hits" title, Gran Turismo(TM)3 A-spec and a racing franchise that has sold more than 38 million units worldwide, Gran Turismo 4 further demonstrates its mission to provide the most authentic driving simulation available in the marketplace. The new features will extend above and beyond just pure automotive racing, providing a unique destination for automotive and PlayStation 2 enthusiasts to enjoy car culture in every dimension -- extending that goal will be highlighted through new modes such as "GT Director Mode / B-spec" and "GT Photo Mode." In addition, enhanced popular features will return with "Gran Turismo Mode" and "Gran Turismo Arcade Mode."

Latest Installment Offers The Most Comprehensive Automotive Driving Simulation

"Following up on an initial million unit plus launch in Japan, we have high expectations that Gran Turismo 4 will once again raise the bar for the racing videogame category here in North America."

Gran Turismo 4 Game Mode Descriptions
Available for one to two players, as well as up to six players via LAN, Gran Turismo 4 offers an array of new features. These features include a physics engine that incorporates real-life characteristics of the cars so that they are realistically designed and calculated to simulate the "real life" physics of that particular vehicle, taking into account weight, speed,
friction, wind, and more. In addition, an all-new AI (Artificial Intelligence) engine is introduced allowing for behavior from opponents that present human-like reactions and emotions. Gran Turismo 4 continues to offer a refined replay mode with broadcast-quality graphics and now offers support for both High-Definition (1080i) and Dolby Pro Logic II. In addition to the use of the DUALSHOCK 2 analog controller, Gran Turismo 4 is compatible with the Logitech(R) Driving Force Pro(TM) wheel, which allows the player to
further enhance the automotive racing experience, and can be used for the entire game. Available in black with brushed aluminum accents, the Gran Turismo branded GT Force wheel provides a shifter for manual transmissions, 900 degrees of steering rotation and force-feedback. For more information, please visit http://www.logitech.com.

Arcade Mode
Players compete against each other or the artificial intelligence with select cars on select courses. Various gameplay modes are available that include "Single Race," "Time Trial," and multi-player for up to two players (single console) or six players via LAN-based gameplay. More cars and course are available in the GT Arcade Mode when they are unlocked in the Gran Turismo Mode.

Gran Turismo Mode
Via the GT World, players start from the bottom and race to earn money, unlock cars and courses, buy and sell cars and upgrade parts while competing in more than 200 various championship races. Upon entering the GT World, players have the option to visit the following Gran Turismo resort facilities:
-- My Home -- the player's home and garage
-- Dealership Town -- divided by continent, players can visit dealerships
representing over 80 manufacturers from around the world.
-- Tuner's Village -- players can visit famous tuning shops to upgrade
their car(s).
-- Race Event Pavilions -- players can visit and join various races.
-- License Center -- players will have the opportunity to participate in
various driving tests to earn licenses for access to various race
formats.
-- Music Theater -- players can enjoy various music from around the world.
-- Circuit Racing -- players can visit the "suburbs" and enter races at
various circuit tracks.
-- Mission Races -- To experience the drama of racing at a new level, a
new race style is structured as a mission-clearing based race event
offering numerous variables for the player to capture the checkered
flag.
-- New "High Score" System -- The player who wins a race is not
necessarily the one who captures the checkered flag, but graded on how
well they drive and challenge themselves among the competition based on
their car type, horsepower and modifications related to the race field.

B-spec Mode
Players take the role of a race team manager and provide direction to their driver (A.I.) to compete in races while viewed and directed through the classic "broadcast-style" replay screen, on-board camera and race monitor screen. In B-spec mode, the player will have the opportunity to adjust various car settings for proper race setup, choose the difficulty level, which is also known as the "Pace Command," followed with direction on when to
overtake competition and take pit stops where a variety of car settings can be adjusted to further progress in the race -- from tires to the volume of fuel for refueling.

Photo Mode
Divided in two formats: 1) "Photo Drive" -- players have the opportunity to photograph their car during the race where they can take advantage of zoom, depth of field and motion blur. 2) "Photo Travel" -- Players can take their favorite car and travel around the globe to conduct photo sessions in exotic locations through a variety of angles. Once the photo is taken in the game, the player can save it to their memory card (8MB) (for PlayStation(R)2) or a USB key and have the option to share with friends or print out a color copy via a USB printer. Up to 50 photos can be taken at one time.

General
In Gran Turismo 4, automobiles available for the player represent historically significant vehicles to popular cars of today and tomorrow. All vehicles are fully customizable from racing tires to gear ratio. New driver assist functions: In addition to anti-lock brakes, traction control systems and active stability control, Gran Turismo 4 includes active steering as well, further enhancing the safety features. In reflecting the latest car tuning
trends, Gran Turismo 4 has the availability of superchargers and NOS. More than 50 courses are available in Gran Turismo 4 that encompass dirt/snow courses, world circuits, original circuits (tracks from previous Gran Turismo titles) and city courses covering both real-life and fantasy-based locales. Some courses can be played in reverse mode. Some courses include Nurburgring Nordschleife, New York City, the Grand Canyon, Tsukuba Circuit, and more.

Looks like they made some changes to the JPN version for the NA release. Here is a repost of some of my comments from the other thread for reference:

I've been playing this game since the Japanese launch and here are some of my comments on (the JPN version of) the game:

The good:

- Better looking than GT3. Graphics look sharper, textures look cleaner, colors look richer.
- Tracks look wonderful and the real race courses are very accurately recreated.
- The new physics engine seems much more complex and accurate compared to GT3. Cars are much more fun to drive and their handling feels more real.
- There is finally a penalty system when you crash into a car or wall/barrier.
- Sound is improved. Engine sounds are better, but the major improvement are the sound effects of the wind noise when driving at high speed, and road noise when driving over different surfaces.
- Photo mode is actually pretty cool. Just check out some of the pictures in the official thread to see for yourself.

Minor problems:

- The game structure and progression are exactly the same as other GTs, which makes the game feels kind of old. Something new or a bit different in terms of progression wound make the game feel much fresher.
- The engine sounds, while improved, cound still be better. Some cars sound much better than before but some cars, like the Maclaren SLR, sound downright abysmal. I don't have a nice sound system so perhaps things wound improve with one. And I guess with 700+ cars, some inconsistencies are to be expected.
- The AI is better, but not much better.

More serious problems:

- No garage mode in 2P versus play.
- No save options for the 24h endurance race.

I can live with these problems since I don't really play versus and can use B-Spec mode for the endurance race, but I can imagine there are many who are, rightfully, expecting these options.

My personl beefs:

- The implementation of the A-Spec point system is botched

First of all, you have no idea how much point you are going to get until you actually enter a race or championship, which makes it really cumbersome if you are trying to earn more points or want an easier race. When this happens, you have to a) quit the race or championship, b) tune/de-tune the car or find a more suitable car, then c) re-entered the race or championship and hope everything works out for you.

Second of all, the system is supposed to be an indication of the difficulty of the race, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, you would get a pretty easy 150 pts race, while other times, you would get a pretty difficult 100 pts race. This wound be more tolerable had you at least know how many A-Spec points you are going to get, but, unfortunately, that's not the case.

- One other (related) complaint is that it is often a chore to find a race that is the right challenge. It usually is either too hard, if not impossible, or too easy. This is a problem in all the GTs and they tried to fix it, I think, with the A-Spec point system. It would have been a pretty good idea had the system been implemented better. As is now, if I want a challenging, winnable race against the CPU, I have to struggle to find it.

These problems don't happen all the time and can be worked around, but they are still distracting and annoying, and something that should be relatively easy to iron out before the release of the game. Hopefully, the US version is better.

Final comments:

With the new, more detailed physics engine and the beautifully and precisely modelled cars and tracks, this game, as someone mentioned earlier, makes a perfect hot-lap simulator. As a pure racer, the game is still a bit lacking. For that, the game would need better AI and better balance in terms of challenge.

With all that said, I still find the game immensely enjoyable, if flawed. If I have to give the game a score it will be something like an 8.5 or 9.0.

I'd take the Euro intro over the US intro anyday...

I hate that particular Van Halen song. It seems like something they'd use in a NASCAR game or something and just does nothing for me...

Awful awful choice...
please... Nascar wouldn't touch that song with a 100 mile pole.

Yeah Garage Battles are now in. Hit the 1 or 2 buttons on top in the selection screens. Took me a while to find it, they could have just put garage on the button instead.

I don't mind the intro music. However if it was my choice and I had to use a classic rock song. I'd pick Thunderstruck by ACDC.

Frame only: $349

Wow, I didn't know it was officially coing out here...this came out of nowhere =P

That's a poor man's cockpit. I'll do you one better and post a link to a *MUCH BETTER RACE FRAME*

Adjustments galore and sturdy beyond belief. Also works with ANY racing seat.

Damn, I thought everyone had it already. I ogt mine at 5 today and i'm enjoying the 1080i (although it's really not a big jump from 480p). My first car... MR-2 turbo. The only other one I saw that had more HP for under 10,000 credits was the Lancer.

most stores around me says wednesday actually.

So does anyone have the game yet? [edit] US version*

yep, picked mine up at EB @ around 7:30. i'm about halfway through the A license exams... could have brought over my licenses from GT3, but i wanted to start fresh. couldn't resist bringing over that 100k though =]

it feels a lot different than GT3 to me. throttle control plays a huge part. its WAY more easier to slide around this time. the control seems a lot more finer (doesn't necessarily mean easier). the physics seem a lot more real. and every car has its own feel, moreso than GT3 in my opinion.

the AI... seems the same to me, maybe a little bit harsher (i got slammed a few times in arcade mode when i would come up next to someone and try to take them inside).

so far, i'm really happy with it. i hope i can get my $200 out of it though =\

There should be an old 250hp Skyline under $10k.

My Gamestop FUCKING SUCKS. They called everyone on the GT4 reservation list and told them it'll be in between 6:00 and 7:00. 7:30 rolls around and the small store is packed full of pissed off people (it's pouring outside) when the fat guy behind the counter announces that not only does the pickup spot not have the game yet, but it'll be first come first served as they aren't getting enough to cover all the reservations. Those who don't get it tonight have to wait until sometime next week to pick it up. It doesn't matter if you have the game fully paid off, the little 12 year old who traded in a stolen game from Blockbuster this morning can get it before you because he got there before you. I just called them (at 8:00) and they STILL don't have it in.

In order to try to prevent people from leaving, the liar behind the counter was trying to sound all special as he proudly declared that this store would be the only one in San Diego county to get the game tonight. Right after he said that one of the guys in the crowd said he worked for Fry's and they had it in tonight for sale. The only reason he was there was because he put $5 down. The guy told the people in the crowd if they followed him to Fry's he'd be able to get them a copy. When he and a few other people left, the guy behind the counter looked PISSED.

When I called them at 8:00 they said "It should be here within five minutes." I just called them back right now and they said "It should be here within five minutes." They sounded a bit paniced this time and there was a lot of shouting behind them. I'm going to run down there right now to see the riot building.

Hey guys i have a question for you. Did you notice that sometimes the graphic kinda shake? I mean, there's no other way i can describe this really. Sometimes it's like everything starts shaking. Alternative to slowdown or tearing?? wtf is that?

If you don't know what i'm talking about, it happen alot during the liscences. Take per example liscence test b-13. 1 time outta 2 in the winning screen where the camera rotate around your car surrounded by some GT dudes it starts to "shake".

I've noticed it also happen sometimes during a race when there's many cars on screens and your at certain places in certain circuits. I really wonder what this is, this sure does not make the game look more polished ;(

yeah, i saw that too. there was a thread about it over at gtplanet. supposedly it was a bug in the jpn version. pd had enough time to take it out, but for some reason they didn't... maybe fixing it screwed something else up.

however, i guess it's not visible in 1080 from what i have heard

Yeah right tks. Like i will buy an HDTV to set my GT4 on a non-buggy mode...
Very sad for a title that as been in devellopment for so long. And such a high profile/budget one.

Well, I managed to get my copy and will start playing in a few minutes, but it amazes me that there are always the same selection of fucktards at every major game release:

The kid who swore he pre-ordered it but has no proof and the store can find no proof so he stands there fighting with the store while holding up the rest of the line.

The guy who pre-ordered at a different store, but doesn't want to drive there after driving to this store, so he sits there yelling at the employees to sell him a copy or else he won't leave.

The kid with bags of trade-ins that hold up the rest of the line and then pays for the difference in coins.

ManaByte said:

for that reason, and that reason only, i had to stand in line for halo2 for about 4 hours. when i got home, i played it for 5 min and went to bed.

that stinks. maybe someone could get a thread started so we could try and get to the bottom of this? i don't think that many people are checking out this thread anymore.

I've only started it up once, but the song that plays in the intro was Panama and not Moon over the Castle.

First thing I really noticed about the gameplay was how the DFP doesn't react nearly as violently as it did in GT3. Playing GT3 the thing would constantly jerk really hard at certain points, especially if you ever reverse. It feels much more smooth and realistic in GT4.

Another thing is that the old courses feel really differently. Especially Laguna Seca which is much more narrow in comparison to how it was in GT3. It definetly forces you to change your driving tactics with it.

I've also noticed the screen shaking a bit. But i've only seen it happen in the rolling starts and not during gameplay or replays.

Anyway I thank them for the GT3 save credits. I was able ot start off in a R34. :)

people got the us version to work on xlink, but apperantly it involves jumping through alot of hoops, even more then the jpn version :|

I've seen the shakin during gameplay on El Capitan.

I gotta say I'm really surprised at how the game handles. The vehicules actuall have weight now, and feel like thy are tied to the road by their wheels and suspension, not just localised in spaceover the track.

It makes GT3 feel totally diconnected

I have played only two races, but after racing the Seattle circuit all I can say to PD is WTF?!? The kingdome is still there? Real Driving Simulation™ my ass!

Would it have been too much to take out the Kingdome and put in Qwest field?

what the hell is up with the license tests? There are soo many. Those "coffee breaks" piss me off too.

there aren't really that many more than gt3. and the coffee breaks aren't required for the license.

if you think there are too many tests to complete, i take it you never tried pgr2 on xbox...

Wait, why wouldn't they allow you to use the cars from your garage in 2player mode? They allowed it in GT3! If I'm not getting a online mode I should be able to use my car against my friends >_>

Edit:
I was so close to having 100% in GT3 (that stupid yamauchi and complex string >_<). Does this game seem possible to get 100% without loosing your soul?

Dino said they're in the US version.

What's everyones garage looking like right now? Here's mine

Mazda RX-7 Type R-S (FD,J) '95
Toyota Motor Triathlon Race Car '04
Nissan Skyline GR-R V-spec 2 Nur (R34) '02
Autobianchi A112 Abarth '79
Nissan Skyline 2000GT-B (S54A) '67

The R34 was my first car, I bought the Mazda for the FR races, and the rest i've won through beating races.

I am about to lose my soul trying to get this stupid little MG around hong kong in a gold time in the ib test.

Tuvoc said:
Nissan Silvia K (S13) '89

thats it...

I sold the Autobianchi and the VW Lupo for parts money.

I'll probably be doing that. I had to spend alot on getting my Mazda fixed up because I took it to the Seattle FR circuit and got dominated pretty hardcore. I boosted it up to around 325hp. Much better now.

My garage so far:
Used R32 Skyline GT-R '91(?), stock
Used Trueno AE86 GT-Apex '83, low to mid-level mods (my current workhorse for the beginner stages...spent so much cash money on this bad boy so far =P)
Lexus IS200, low level mods (modded it to what I have on my own IS300...sports exhaust, sports suspension, wheels =)
Autobianchi A112 Abarth '79, stock...won the Sunday Cup...w00t, lol

Game looks great on 1080i...but I notice it changes resolutions between menus and in-game...is it supposed supposed to do that?

WHAT THE FUCK!? They took out pretty much all of Masahiro Andoh's tracks. Goddamn fucking stupid SCEA, fuck off and die.
