Game looks great on 1080i...but I notice it changes resolutions between menus and in-game...is it supposed supposed to do that?

Yeah the game pops back to 480i during the menus. When that happens you will get a pop or distortion between loading screens. It's a pain but, man 1080i looks great.

Picked it up this morning, and man I had totally forgotten what GT feels like.

It's weird but, you feel strangely satisfied for doing all the little things like taking a turn properly or braking at the right moment in this game.

Fun game though, I'm getting owned pretty bad on the license tests though (barely snuck out a B license so far). Photo mode itself is also great fun.

Did anyone else make it to that GT4 "Free Gas" event? I didn't have work yesterday, so I decided to check it out.

There was a lot of traffic when I arrived in Van Nuys around 8:45am.
They blocked off the driveway from the westbound Sherman Way side of the Mobil station. So I had to go around the block to get to the driveway from Sepulveda Blvd heading south.
I was told that I was supposed to have a voucher, so I missed out on the free gas.

I did manage to score a free copy of this game, by winning a mini "2-Player Battle" tournament at this location.

What I haven't seen so far in GT4 are detailed car descriptions...is it in here this time? I see the standard stats and numbers on cars when I'm about to buy them, but there's no other info that goes along with it. It was great to read the stories behind so many of the cars in GT2, I literally spent tons of hours just doing that at times. GT3 had detailed descriptions too, but I didn't like the fact that the info slowly scrolled by instead of just having all the text there and read at your own pace. The text descriptions helped give the previous GTs that 'museum' feel.

The JPN version has descriptions for many if not all of the cars. The description rolls along the bottom of the screen when you select a car for purchase, you can stop the rolling if you press and hold L3 if I remember correctly.

In the JPN version, there're also narrations of the car descriptions, which you can toggle on/off with the O button, when you choose replay/demonstration. Not sure if this is in the NA version though.

Anyone thought about a new "official thread" for the US release? Not to bother those that imported, but I didn't want to get burnt out before it came here and I'm sure a lot of us have the same questions again, etc. If that sounds horrible, I apologize.

Anyhow, I'm about to check it out...I'm so excited!

I'm glad they put the used cars back in this one. I love tooling around for deals.

That shaky screen thing is happening to me too. Very strange.

I'm going to actually try out B-Spec tonight. In some ways I think B-Spec is kind of a great idea for the VERY casual gamer... so casual that they don't really want to play but just see pretty stuff and only kind of interact with it.

I'd wager that if Madden made a B-Spec type mode where you didn't even pick the play, just pick run or pass, short or long, or "pass to Moss", something like that, I'd be even more people would get into it as they'd get to watch a game from dramatic TV Angles and still be involved but in a very detached manner.

Which tracks?

Everything is gone but the orchestral moon over the castle, according to the pdf acklame posted earlier. There was just no reason to remove Andoh's stuff, I doubt they ran out of space on a DVD9. SCEA's record of being tasteless fucks carries on.

got my copy, just finished the b licenses, but had to stop to watch Lost. so far i really like it. the physics in car are so much better than gt3. the car's really throw their weight around now. it sets down hard when braking on certain cars and really just feels great. like the guy above mentioned, you really feel the weight in these cars. haven't noticed any shaking graphics yet though, so dunno about that.

also, the 1080i isn't very impressive. in fact, i almost prefer the 480p for some reason. and you can still see the shimmering pretty bad. still a lot of fun so far, can't wait to get back.

got mine today. havent gone into GT mode yet. Ive seen the shaking but its not as bad as I had feared (so far). it seems to go away as soon as the racing starts so its no big deal really. Im kinda freaking out on the DFP wheel doing multiple rotations when i go into slides and stuff. Im kinda disappointed in the Dolby PL II. I might switch to stereo like I did with GT3 as it seemed to bring out more of the engine noise. then again I havent turned off the music yet so that might make a difference.

Im gonna try going on Xlink in a while in case any of you are interested in trying to get it to work. Ill probably be jumping in there around 9:30 EST

O.K. here's a POLL:

How many of you decided to import your GT3 savegame to get the extra money?

I won't be getting the game until June, but I will start playing from scratch. From what I've read, it's a much more satisfying and fulfilling experience. I'm gonna strive for 100% ALL GOLDS in everything just like I did in GT3 :)

Nice game! The weight additions are great and obvious. Getting the "shaky cam" a fair amount. Playing this on a new PSTwo so that sort of sucks. Looking forward to really exploring the game. The intro is fantastic but I gotta say...it does feel a lot like GT3. That's not all bad and it's not all good. I guess I was expecting something a bit more in that respect, it was a little bit of a comedown. AI is really bad. Doesn't look that much better. Still, great to have it, lot of hours ahead I'm sure. Can't wait to get some of my favorite cars.

Half a bottle of port later and I golded the damn MG hong kong IB test. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! God this game rocks, worth the price just for the license tests alone.

No HDloader yet.

ALL gold A,B and and IB, now for IA and S

Yeah, just a little intoxicated shut up!

well I just got done playing online through Xlink and it was pretty sweet. played about 5 straight races against the same guy and only started to see lag the last couple races. havent tried to race anyone else yet but it worked and it was fun. small online consiliation get@!

Truelize said:
So I'm hearing that there is no luck playing this with the HDloader, is that correct?

Supposedly you can load it from HDloader, but there's 2 things to point out

1. Since the game is on a dual layered DVD, you'll have to copy the game on a computer and use tools to "flatten" the image so both layers are structured in a ISO. Then transfer the game to the hard drive

and...

2. You MUST have the GT4 disc in the drive whenever you load the game from hdloader. The game's executable checks the dual layers on the actual DVD disc, but the game's content will load from the hard drive.

So yeah, you can have it on hdloader but it seems too much work to do so. I'm not sure how much loading times you'll save by doing this

Some people are saying it still loads from the disc even when you use hdloader, so I have no idea. I guess it isn't really worth the time

That damn GT force pro wheel is looking so tempting right now. It seems GT4 really makes you use the pressure sensitive gas peddle more than it's predecessor. For example, many of the license tests tell you to ease off the gas on certain turns, but the problem is that the control is so damn precise that any slight push gives me full gas. For times like these I miss the XBOX triggers where you can really feel where you are on the pedal. Anyway, I know that pedals would help me a great deal, but until I figure out how to make a solid cockpit I'm stuck with the DS.

sweet. next time you wanna race online let me know. i want in. i have 768k upload speed (which i pay extra for) so i can host really good if u need me to.

been playing more. the b-spec is handy like when you gotta get up and use the restroom or make a drink, u just let the cpu run a race for you and make you some cash. nice. the loading times in this game are just brutal and are really pissing me off; and the menu layout is shit. not only confusing but just overall poorly implemented. it needs some serious streamlining imo. they could have helped with the poor loading times by allowing more options to go directly to other areas without having to navigate 4 menus with 2 extra loading areas to get there. for instance, having a way to get to the garage, car shops from some of the event/race screens etc.

i keep going back and forth between 480p and 1080i... i still think 480p is a tad better for some reason. the game's physics are really, really great though and that makes it fun for me. online will be missed however, unless we all can get some of this xlink love going. i should be able to host 6 of us GAF'ers easy. hgplayer and I are 2, need 4 more... any volunteers to get in on a little league of our own?

P.S. Gek, I have the original red momo. is the new 900 degree wheel really awesome? also, and most importantly, does it work on the PC like the momo does? that is a must for me as i race to many pc sims to not have a wheel for it, and i want an all in one wheel (i will sell this red momo if that one will work); and how is it on the pc? is it as good as the red momo? the pedals on it look really cheap and shitty, which worries me.

Im gonna get on tomorrow night. read this thead and check your settings.

i got it to work fairly easily but some people are having problems.

Actually as I'm going thru the game I realized that I have the Logitec Driving Force Pro...but isn't the best one the GT Force Pro?! *shakes head* I was too excited I guess.

how many people can play in xlink? I assume just 2 right?

doh. forget it i'm an idiot - it should be 6 right?

Ok, important question here.

When in the Photo Mode, how do I save the photos onto my USB device?

What do you have to do? What kind of device does it need to be? Becuase I am trying to use my Sony Handcam with it's Memory Stick and save them on there, but I am having no luck... it's just not detecting it.

What do other people use to get their pics? I don't see how my cam can't act as a storage device!

Same here, I am using the 16Mb USB stick that Sony gave on last year's E3 and although the red light shows on the thing, the game says that USB Storage device cannot be found.

Anyone had some luck yet with this?

im having trouble getting xlink to actually install, but uh, once you have it installed and shit, is it easy to get it up and running?

like I said I got it to work fairly easily. i guess it depends on your set up but I had to tinker with it a little bit. as far as the game settings you pretty much have to do it as described in the thread I linked to above.

you probably wont have much luck with more than 2 people in a game even though you can actually get 6 people in one game. more than two and chances of lag are just too great.

I think its very picky about USB drives it will recognize. Im using a SanDisk cruzer micro 256MB and it works fine. some people have said that ipods or shuffles work. one guy said his olympus digital camera worked but not too many people have had luck with cameras.

Driving Force Pro> Driving Force>GT Force

Dude, I'm not sure you've actually tried those wheels. The Driving Force is cool because it has the buttons, but the positioning is a bit off. The real problem though is that the Driving Force pedals don't have as much travel as the GT Force (electronically it's lower resolution) and you can't paddle shift and brake at the same time if you've got your wheel turned really far... (design issue).

Suggestion: Use the right analog stick for the gas peddle rather than the face buttons...

I booted this game up and was amazed but then i played it in game and it just looked good not amazing at all. Replays look amazing though.

In game is pretty dissapointing after playing RSC2.

I played more GT4 last night, I still can't find any detailed descriptions for the cars...that's sad, especially knowing all that info was in the Japanese version.

Thanks for the info Ryu.

Edit: Or am I just BLIND?! =P lol

Yeah that definetly sounds like it isn't worth the work. I'm so addicted to less load times and I like not hearing my PS2 dvd drive anymore. It's not a big deal though.

I definitely didn't think that after finally seeing the Grand Canyon stage for real. It looked like it was made of all polys too (even if it isn't). Very impressive.

Hmm... I'll try this tonight because I see how you could feel the pressure, but it sounds really unnatural.

Weird. Good thing: I can directly save the photos during GT4 photo shoot mode onto my PSP via USB connection mode. Bad thing: It saves it in a GT4 folder on the root of the stick so you can't view the pics on the PSP's picture viewer without moving the files into the right folder with a computer. Man Sony really needs a file browser for their next firmware update.

That is good to know :)

At the moment GT4 is very picky on xlink. you have to do everything in the right order, and need ping 50 or lower to get a lag free game.
in theory, if all players live in the same area and have good connections, you could have lag free 6 player games
Its been very hard for us to give support since most of the crew are in Europe. Once the game releases over here TD might be able to optimize the engine and get it to run smoother at higher pings .
The lag is comparable to the way Gamecube games behave over tunneling, only not as bad: the gametime will simply slow down completely, though youll never see opponents jump around like you do in most other online games.

so, i have a question...

i really have almost no time to play games lately, and money isnt exactly pouring out of my pocket at the moment... yet i'm still waging an internal struggle on whether or not i sould pick up gt4 and the force pro wheel.

getting gt4 without a wheel is out of the question. the duel shock is friggen awefull for racing games (IMO).

i guess my real question is, am i likely to be able to find a cheaper used gt4 any time soon, and is the pro wheel with 900 degrees really that much better then the old ff wheel?

EDIT: also, is it likely that the pro wheel could be used for ps3. i know, its pure speculation, but dont ps1 accessories work with ps2? sorry if this is a completely ignorant question, but if i'm gonna be spending that much for a wheel, i better get plenty of use from it

Well, photo mode is the shit. I thought it would be useless crap until I read the post where the person said that you can go direct to PSP from the USB port on the PS2. I rearranged the files and I have a couple of pics on the PSP... Nice. Also, if anyone can tell me how to get sharp pictures without using flash, I'll be glad to post my other pics that came out like ass.
