The Official Gran Turismo 4 Thread (Now with sexier graphics)

How do you get the blur like that in photo mode? I switched to manual focus and focused on my car but everything else was not as blurry as the EVO pic above.
Hmmm...usually I switch to a camera position where the objects are in far view, I zoom in so my objects fill the screen to where I want it, I center the object I want to focus on (in this case the Mitsu emblem on the Evo's grille), reposition the camera to what I want, then 'click.' Since this is in motion GT4 I guess will render the blur effect.

I'm not good at figuring out aperture, shutter speed, etc., but if anything I learned a couple of basic things from my brother (who is a photographer) about positioning objects for a pic =)

About the Evo pic, the car was running in b-spec mode, the moment I switched to photo mode the photgrapher in the pic was already well out of the way...when I was in photo mode the photographer was placed in its original position again...I have no idea why that happened, but that instantly made it a 'Kodak moment' lol

When in Photo mode, you can choose to switch the measurement options from the generic gauge they show by default below the preview window to actual f-stop numbers and shutter speeds.

Then select something like an f/22 to get long depth of field and everything more or less in focus. To keep the foreground object in focus but leave everything behind blurred, use a short focal length such f/2.8. Middling choices are f/8, f/11.

About the HDTV 1080i 'shaking' issue, I notice it happening in races sometimes (not really in-game, but like in the stats screen in b-spec mode). What I notice is that for some odd reason my TV does not switch to 1080i mode when it's loading up a race and I have to go back to the options screen to switch it back. Afterwards it's ok again, but I don't know why my TV (or the game?) fails to switch modes when loading up a race at times.

Question:

There's this red gear indicator thing that keeps popping up to tell me when to downshift, and it's incredibly annoying. I don't want any "assists" on, since I've become dependent on this to tell me when to initiate braking. BAD BAD BAD. Can't find any way to disable it. Is there? Any help would be appreciated ;b

Top notch entry in the series as expected, but the disappointment in lack of car selection isn't just about the Ferraris and Porsches that Microsoft (PGR2, Forza) and EA have largely locked down. I would have loved to wring out any of latest excellent Cadillacs (not just 1 oddball showcar), or have a choice of Saabs, and no Corvette C6?! A lot of the licenses were just left static too apparently, the dumpy, cancelled Acura CL coupe still there yet no TSX or TL. There is a lot more missing than that, but the lack of Caddies and C6 stings most.

the TSX is in the game as the Honda Accord Euro R. I agree with you though. for all the Skylines and Evos in the game youd think they could have bumped up the car selection on some of the other manufacturers. It simply makes no sense why they would leave out some of the more desirable models for certain manufacturers.

I finally finished the 24 hour race. Man the pay off is good.

if you can get xlink working, tunneled lan play is incredibly awesome, but can anyone figure out how to add garage cars to your favorites?

Did you let it run overnight in B Spec mode?

Off and on. the game can complete it all in b-spec mode. I tried doing it all but none of my friends would take over while I sleep. :(

18 lap lead on 3rd? I guess its true those races are kinda easy to win.

All you need is a good car :)

I think its pretty much confirmed that theres no way to use garage cars in any arcade mode. I had one bout of good luck with Xlink and it was fun but its such a pain in the butt just getting one connection to work Ive somewhat given up on it. Im open to any invitations to race though. :)

I think PD should have included an option to condense time in real time for the endurance races. I remember that 24 Hours of LeMans game on Dreamcast allowed you to do that and I think it had several settings such as 24hrs=12hrs, 24hrs=6hrs, 24hrs=1hour. something to that effect. it also allowed you to save your race in the pits.

you cant save during the 24hr race? isnt it bad to leave a system running that long?

i hear some of you guys talking about turning down or off the assists... how is that done?

nope no saving in the middle. When testing for Sony, it is required that the game is left on for 48 hours with out crashing. So it's safe to do, but does add ware and tear.

I guess the answer is obviously NO, but does the sun go down/up during the 24h races? Shit, even a DC game had that, so I'm wondering. :P

to change your assist settings in GT mode you have to do it to each individual car. before you start a race you should have a Settings option. go into that that and look for Driving Aids. you should have two ASM settings and a TCS setting. I usually change both ASMs to 5 and turn TCS down one notch from whatever that cars default is.

ahh, cool. thanks. should make the game even better now :)

you know I had thought about it when I first heard there was an actual 24 hour race but I had kinda forgot about it. well I just did some searching at planetgt's forums and I saw this question asked and answered.

No.

Are you fucking kidding me? 24 hours of daylight. thats a joke on anyones ass that tries to do the whole 24 hours by themselves.

I doubt it, but is there a way to change your username short of restarting your save? In my hurry to start the game I mispelled my name and didn't take notice of that until now -_-()

Getting gold on license tests sucks hard. Ugh. I am having a brutal of a time with getting gold in the B test when you have to do a lap with the Mini Cooper. I would rather be racing a ghost than this pace car. I have had to slow down a couple of times going through turns, which has killed my speed. I know you are supposed to race "the right way" but come on. Get out of my way stupid pace car.

So what exactly do I need to transfer pics from my ps2 to my pc?

If you can show me an actual picture (link from Bestbuy or something) that would be awesome.

I'm thinking if the pictures print really well I will frame some for my entertainment room.

Well, from Best Buy canada anyways, it won't be hard for you to find...you can probably get better deals...and you probably only need a 32MB one anyways (they go for $20 Cdn), around $15 US, prolly $10 on sale.

*LOL* I did that in Rallisport Challange 2 and there was no way to change it back. So I was especially careful when doing my GT4 name! :P I wouldn't know of a way to change it...sorry!

Wow! I've got my new Skyline just short of being maxed out and I honestly cannot believe there is any other car in the game that is this fun to drive. I'm loving this thing. I threw on some racing tires and now the car handles so well.
This game is crack.

i got the driving force pro wheel yesterday (ordered from amazon by clicking the ga link). here are some complaints:

- the wheel seems to take a long time to center itself

- the wheel makes too much noise when turning it

- the pedals feel like they should use more resistance

What are you talking about?

WTF? You mean durring calibration?

no, i mean during driving.

let's say i'm driving... and i take a long turn... and i want to turn back to where i was before i took the turn... the wheel seems to take a long time to turn back.

i don't know how else to explain it. maybe that's the way it's supposed to be(?)

That can be changed in the Driving Force Pro settings in the option menu. Some cars also have longer recoil times. I almost always return the wheel to the middle so I do not notice this problem. Also when going 100-160 the recoil time is never fast enough, I believe this is also true to real life. But, again check the options menu they have a assist mode.

Hey Belfast, you chose a pretty difficult car if you aren't good at racing games.

4WD cars aren't that well suited to circuit racing. You have to break in a straight line, coast around the corner and floor it. Otherwise you'll lose it mid-corner. Most 2WD cars will go round corners quicker, but the 4WDs win it back in low speed acceleration out of the corners.

Try a nice Elise

I am stuck on the final IB driving mission on the Le Mans track. I need HELP. I'm lucky to pass the first 2 cars, never mind the third. I am trying to draft. Any help would be appreciated.

"I usually change both ASMs to 5 and turn TCS down one notch from whatever that cars default is."

weak. the fun begins when all 3 settings hit zero.

yup, thats what i did immediately, and the game is waaaay better. feels a lot more sim like, less hands holding.

My evo turned on me and is now unruly. I have roughly 20,000 credits to my name. I need a better car fast. This thing is frustating me. Thank god B-Spec can bail me out...

Any suggestions?:

Crap, forgot to change it to Simulation setting. What is 'Driving Force Pro power assist'?????

You can't change the settings for the DFP; only for DF and GT Force. With the 900 degrees of motion, I guess the thinking is that the game is already calibrated to accurately represent the behavior of a real steering wheel.

I only wish that I could swap out the wheel for a larger diameter one like the one in that Enthusia vid from a few months ago.

Weight reduction, bigger brakes, better suspension, better tires.

as has been mentioned time and time again, you could win the second of the special conditions race to get the prize car and sell it for a quarter million in cash

Set yourself up to start each straight at the highest speed possible. That means going into the chicane a bit slower so you can take a line that allows you to leave faster...

Does anyone know of any cheap versions of these cockpits? I saw one called the wheelstation but it looks too tall. I'm not handy enough to build one from scratch, but I'm not wealthy enough to pay 500+ for something I'll only use for racing games.
It appears the Wheelstation is height adjustable actually. Also, this thing is only $35. WOW!

Check and see if the chasis refresh is available in the "other" section for parts. If it is then you should do it. It's only available when the car actually needs it.

The most important thing is the braking in the first set of corners, so that you can already be accelerating well before you're going straight again. Drafting is essential too, of course (drift from side to side and listen to the wind noise).

I still haven't gotten Driving Mission #23... (or 11-19, but who's counting.)

that thing isnt too bad looking! the only thing though, its seems somewhat not sturdy...i dont want the damn thing slidinga round on me.... and also, when you lower the wheel, you increase the distance to the pedals.... no an issue i guess if your sitting on a couch, but if your gonna be lower to the ground, it could cause problems.

i'm gonna build my own anyways for fun.

still no seat, but i sawed down an old 4 legged chair to use in the mean time. when i go to work tomorrow i'm gonna pay for my order and get the guys in the dept to get started on making the neccessary cuts :D

I went ahead and bought the Mediastation instead of the Wheelstation. The reason is because the MS looks more sturdy. It is bigger and made out of more wood. It also serves the dual purpose of being able to put a keyboard and mouse on it for gaming on your TV; and of course also being able to mount a wheel to it for racing.

Check out the Mediastation version. It's only $5 more and if you watch the videos of both, you'll see in the MS video that it is much more sturdy looking.

p.s. technically, if you lowered the wheel, you could cut off some of the length from the legs to prevent the pedals getting too far away from you.

Oh my God, the Mazda RX-8 is unbelievable in this game. I've driven the actual car several times, but I didn't appreciate how tight it was until I juiced it up to 525 horsepower and it still handled like a star. I bet the LM race car you get from the RX-8 race is going to be even better...

I can't stand IA-15 -_-!! Not only is it a super long test which makes it less pleasurable to retry but I keep messing up cause I get scared of losing control if the car gets going to fast so I take it slow and don't meet the 10 minute deadline!

my car of the day award goes to the Audi A3. man that thing was gripping the turns like nothing Ive driven so far in this game.

I also had a lot of fun driving the Aston Martin DB9. the one make races are so much fun IMO.

S-16 is worse, because the car is similar, but faster. >.< I've done all the others, but haven't been able to finish this one, even with a failing time...

I completed the Benz Nurb license in one attempt and got a silver for it too. I did it first on the import and then on the domestic. :p
