The Official Gran Turismo 4 Thread (Now with sexier graphics)

Wow holy crap!

First, Polyphony art + lighting > *

Second, could somebody point out to me what to look for in the comparison pics? I'm feeling dumb for not instantly seeing it.

Third, if Pana or Faf is reading this, any thoughts on how can GT4 turn out on PSP? From what I've played my PSP, it seems to be short on polygons at least if the first games are judged.

I do not think first generation PSP games are to blame: their budget was not even sky-rocketing to boot.

We will see how much time and resources PD will have to work on a very optimized portable GT4.

I think Sony/SCE wants a great showcase for their portable, they do not want their GT series to be outshined by other racing games.

I generally hate the GT series and I wasn't impressed with Prologue but the 1080i support might actually convince me to give it a shot once released. Most likely, I will become bored with it almost immediately but you never know...

Have any REAL pics of the PSP version been released? Is there any word on a release date or a definitive feature list? I haven't seen anything other than what appeared to be early screen mock-ups.

Nope. None.

boat load of new info at:

copied from chaser_fan's post:
Pit crews - Yes, cobragt there are fully animated pit crews! As you go into the pits a menu comes up on which you select the changes you want to make to your car, then as you pull into your spot the mechanics swarm over your car and you get a sequence of them fixing the car from different positions. When all is done, the car slams back onto the ground and you're off!

Rolling starts - Most of the races I have driven in so far have started with a rolling start. I have driven about 15 races and I have only had one standing start so far.

NOS - I have fitted nitrous-oxide to my Lancer TME and you can use 50 or 100ps shots (selectable before a race) you use it by pressing R1 and there's a level meter which shows how much laughing gas you have left. The extra speed you gain is pretty insane and although it's very fun it seems to be a bit unfair to the other cars on track as you completely trounce them with it.

Used car lots - There are two used car lots. A '90s' lot and an 'Old Timer' lot where you can pick up some real bargains. The cars aren't quite as interesting as they were in GT2, but there is still some interesting hardware to be had. I picked up a Mitsu Lancer VI TME (complete with steel wheels and black plastic door handles and mirrors) for 1,200,000Y and have since pushed it up to 360ps. Other interesting cars I have seen are the R34 GT-R in a flip-flop purple colour, a Stagea Autech 260RS, 80s Camaro and lots of other things which I don't really remember right now.

Backfire - Yes, the cars do backfire quite frequntly depending on the level of tuning you've done. You can hear the exhaust POP and the flames come out the exhaust. It looks particulary good when you're following a car with exhausts on either side at the back.

Dynamics - The handling in this game is awesome. You 'feel' the car so much more than in previous GT games. When you brake hard into the corner, the car dips forward in a very harsh manner and you can feel the front of the car raise under hard acceleration. If you puts the car onto the green-stuff and spin it, it is really difficult to get it back into a straight line again and you will lose a lot of time.

Time penalties - In some races such as the 'Rallye' ones, when you are against one other car, you will get time penalties when you hit the wall or the back of the other car. The penalties are 5 seconds (where you are limited to 50kmh) and I'm sure I had a 3 second penalty once too.

So, is it possible to connect the PSP in USB mode to the PS2 and transfer pics from the Photo Mode directly on the Mem Stick?

i don't think anyone has tried that yet, but according to gtplanet's thread one poster has tried plugging in a usb pen device into ps2 to transfer pics and it works.

Whoa, looks almost as sharp as an anti-aliased Xbox title now! :)

Too bad the textures are ugly low-res. Lighting color is nice though, Forza still doesn't have the realistic lighting colors...

Jees. Stop bashing!
GT4 kicks every other racegame to the moon!

Haha, cool.. I wonder how he is animated? IIRC those cars are pretty difficult to drive, you use levers to accelerate/break etc.

So, let me say just one thing:
Polyphony Digital are gods! Doing something like that on the PS2 is unbeliveble.
Think about THEM and PS3! .....my god.....

I'm pretty sure I was giving a compliment, thanks. :)

No you weren't. It was a veiled bash @ the PS2.

Anything less than complete and utter gushing and this point in time is completely unacceptable! POLYPHONY ROCKS YOUR PENIS!

I still think it's the most pointless shit to have like 20 barely different NSXs, and 20 barely different Skylines. GT's selling point has always been the ability to drive your car in a videogame, and GT4 is missing way too many key vehicles from various manufacturers.

Edit: They modeled a 2001 Primera (gag!), but they avoided doing a US Altima and Maxima? They're based on the same platform and engine, and they are virtually identical in performance; all they'd have to do is just slap a different texture on that Primera and call it a day. It still boggles my mind that Polyphony doesn't include Nissan's best selling car; Maxima. I mean jeez, not only does it have the largest car community on the net, but Nissan won best engine awards for 10 years straight with the VQ30!

I hope it's got my 05 Acura TL in it, but i'm 99% sure it doesn't :/ Should have the CL at least though, and the TSX (Euro Accord)

It doesn't. It has two lousy CL's (an 01 and an 03). Argh.
