The "Official" Japanese PSP Launch Thread (NSF56k)

there were a handfull of PSPs in Aki yesterday - lowest price was 36,000 for a standard kit and 48,000 for a value pack (!!!!)

crazy stuff.

Games - quick two three word rundown before i go to work

The RPG whose name i forget : average and generic

Mojipitan : ROCKS - but is a lot harder than usual - fantastic music

Kollon : Quite similar to Pokemon Puzzle, seems interesting, and is available for 1980 yen

Doko Demo : Hmmm... why did i buy this again? very cute so far, my gf has already warned me not to get attached to any of the characters or face heartbreak

Puzzle Bobble : Not bad, it's just puzzle bobble really. Some of the art looks a bit crappy (Bub on the main game screen in particular)

Puyo Puyo is out today - impressions later.

yeah, sorry man - i looked, but no new units.

signs up everywhere in english/japanese "NO - WE DONT KNOW WHEN THE NEXT BATCH IS COMING"

:(

100k units a week? .. where are they?

I have seen in other forums that shops have begun putting ads saying: "NO PSPs TILL 2005" (in Japanese of course)...
It's kinda sad this is happening and the only that it shows is lack of prevision.

Would the GPU lockdown be after they announced the S3TC licensing? Is the S3TC decoding really part of PSP GPU now?
Yes it's there - actually I think it was in before that licensing announcement came about. And I don't know exact time for GPU lockdown, but from what I know it's been locked for a couple of months at least.

Namco have made some interesting sacrifices to get Ridge running the way it does in the time they had to do it
You mean, even more interesting then the stuff they did to get R5 out in time? Actually that would be an interesting question - I know R5 was completed within weeks of PS2 launch, wonder what the timeline for RidgeRacers ended up to be.

The drawback of the absolutely brilliant display is that all the jaggies are all too visible. That Ridge Racers antialiased shot looks hot.
Well that shot is also several times larger then PSP resolution ;)
But yeah, the AA is possible - however don't forget it's been possible on every console this gen and it ended up being used by 5% of titles at most, even on consoles that falsely advertised "free" AA.

All the stories behind RRV are pretty amazing. The game was build from scratch according to a lot of sources. By scratch meaning that no tools were available to complete it. This is pretty amazing and has always made me wonder at what level did the Namco guys work and how they did it.
For me it's still an impressing game in terms of geometry pushed.

Anyways with Ridge Racers the thing is totally different. According to Sony developers were provided with tools/libs/example code and all that stuff that makes developer easier. The problem would be more of planification than anything.

I still want to hear how do you exactly drift...It's a guided drift like in RRV or is more "free" ?

edit: let's try that again, with text.

The Ridge Racers team were working way ahead of the tools and library support, they make no secret of that. PSP library support seems to be good when it actually arrives, though.

More like R4 than RRV.

It's a guided drift. And it's a bit more floaty than RR5 if you let go too long it's easy to find yourself facing the wrong way.

Not sure if I'm sold on RRs yet since I already have the RRDS which is pretty similar. First PSP games I'm getting will be Minna Golf and Lumines. I might have to import Minna since it'll probably be butchered in the localization.

Pretty similar? Boy, you must be high. RRDS is utter garbage compared to Ridge Racers -- it's not even worthy of comparison. It's an embarrassment to the Ridge Racer name -- don't even try to put it in the same league as Ridge Racers. :p

don't worry I am sure gigadent hasn't played the game, probably never will :)

The big difference with PSP and PS2 is that on PSP some things cannot be done outside library support.
On PS2 you could do anything on your own from day one - but the piss poor support also forced you to do practically everything on your own regardless of whether you wanted to or not.

Who the hell is stupid enough to pay 212 for accessories? you can get everything that comes with it anywhere, minus the little carrying case probably.

Wow. I'm glad i didn't bid!

People who thought, like you almost did, that it included the PSP. There is going to be one very mad bidder when that UPS package hits their doorstep.

People need to learn how to fucking read.

indeed - but i think it would be a bigger advance for mankind if people learned how to not suck.

Oh man i laughed out loud when i read that, ah reading comprehension is a lost art. Sides actually kinda hurt from laughing.... The 3 morons that bid on this need to lobotomies. Oh man i just saw that one with the cardboard SorNy PSP bwahaha that was just as good.

I don't get why people don't read the auctions. Don't they wanna know payment method? Don't they wanna know condition? Don't they wanna know shipping method? Don't they want to know how much shipping is?

I bet you I could put like a new Nintendo DS right now up with a buy it now for $100 and have buyer pays additional $200 for shipping and handling and someone would do it. Hell, even $1000 for shipping and handling.

All these eBay auctions reminds me of the Christmas the PS2 came out there was a story about a woman who paid 1200 dollars for the box the PS2 came in.

How did they do anything, though? Isn't it supposed that on a PSP you should not be able to do some things without going through the library?

The blessing and a curse, probably. I kinda wish they allowed devs to bang into metal directly if they really wanted.

Haha, someone should eBay the PSP box and see how much they get for it. :)

F*cking PRO 21 races!!!
DAMN Pacman and his propelled tube car!!! He always seems to catch up no matter how much I block his car.
Although hearing the original Ridge Racer announcer(Arcade/PSX) was a nice change of pace :)

:D Awesome

So, you're this far into the game...

What do you like best about it?

What is your biggest complaint?

If you were tied to a bed and forced to give a numerical value for the game from 1-10 what would it be?

That sounds awesome....can't wait until I get that far into the game. :) IMO Ridge Racers is the best entry in the series yet.

Preorders are reopening again on jp.playstation.com, on Dec. 26 at noon, Japan time.

Delivery is four or more days after the 30th (which is much faster than the turnaround on the last few waves...2nd shipment preorders opened 12/13 and shipped 12/22, 3rd shipment opened 12/20 for shipment on 12/29)...you need to have a Japanese delivery address to order from jp.playstation.com. The last few waves sold out in under a minute, so you'll have to be on it to score one...

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up if you have the means...

If only I knew anyone in Japan...XD (If anyone is in the mood to help the poooooor Ourumov PM me ;).

BTW Defensor, how is the rip going ?

ourumov - im getting one, maybe 2 psps tomorrow. if i get a second one, it is yours.

You will have to pay the higher shipping price to europe. I need you to send me a PM with your phone number and exactly what you want, and I will send you back a price quote with payment instructions.

Eh, not quite what I had in mind so far:

http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1MYZ868LD751J2L3X7BRY1ICRP

Did this real quick using WAV recorder before work and not using any of those programs that neptunes and Marconelly linked me to use. So don't shoot me if this low quality mp3 isn't as great(for some reason recorded in mono :/ ). I will rerecord the track though using LAME recorder or something. Again this is only a sample :)

Oh I heard that track in a video before. It's totally awesome.

Sigh gamefaqs is scaring me about EMS. I know its usually 2 days from Japan to the bay area, and at worst 3 days. But everyone is reporting it taking way longer cuz of the time of the year. Like some shipped on the 17th and still not there yet. I just need some hope that its still shipping about 2 to 3 days, so what are your experiences so far with ship to delivery time.

Dude, it's Christmas time now. There will be severely long delays at this point.

Ya, but postal service was guarenteeing express mail if shipped on the 23rd from the US would arrive by the 24th or at the latest by Christmas. EMS is translated to express mail.

Well, I hope that's the case. If you're guaranteed express mail just wait until Christmas Eve and then make sure you get your money back for that extra shipping if it doesn't arrive on time

How easy would you say it is to learn? RRV drifting is the most natural move in the world for me, but RR4's was so uncontrollable I could never get it to work on a regular basis.

It's really natural - you can start out doing RRV-style drifts and correcting your back end when it swings out, but when you get used to how free it is you'll find yourself pulling 320s through every S-bend and taking half the course sideways.

I just checked the PSP video and i can see the ghosting. IMO it's rather severe, or more than i expected anyway. I've had 16ms (right now), 25ms and some old ass (probably around 50ms) LCDs and neither the 16ms nor the 25ms did show anything like that.

Ghosting might not be that noticeable in games though, as opposed to smearing (i never heard bleeding before). Simple stuff like scrolling text should reveal any weakness here, or games with lots of contrast, such as cell shaded graphics. Some anime video would probably also work.

EMS != Express Mail

EMS = Global Express Mail

it has no guaranteed delivery times. i have 1 package from the 18th that hasn't been delievered, and a package coming from the states shipped the 17th that isnt here in Japan.

Expect delays of up to 2 weeks due to the holidays.

thank you come again.

Hi everyone,

I just received mine today. The battery has worn out. Can I plug a PS2 power cable to the 5V adapter to recharge it? I live in Europe.

Tnx in advance.

Yes. The adaptor is universal (100-240V) so you just need to plug in the right cable for your country.

tetsuo, next time you have an extra PSP to sell I'd be happy to buy it from you.
I sent you a PM a while back wanting to get on the "list" but I didn't get a read receipt back so I'm not sure if you saw it or not.
