The "Official" Japanese PSP Launch Thread (NSF56k)

duckroll said:
By all REPUTABLE reports on the thread that should be EASY! Just twist your PSP while playing Lumines and the UMD should shoot out killing an innocent bystander. You could probably get away with explaining that playing a drug-induced puzzle game made you do it, but Lumines probably won't survive the ordeal. Then you can move on to MGA. :lol

Hahaha. Check out this classic gem by seismologist:

btw, I'm hardly a Nintendo fan since my only console is a Playstation2.

In all seriousness though, yeah I don't expect anyone to be finishing MGA anytime soon, just take your time and enjoy it, I just wanted to further point out how "complete" PSP games seem in comparison with what we've had with handhelds in the past. When Japanese gamers who report clear times post on 2ch that it's 24 hours long, I really expect many people to take 30 hours or more. That's a very good sign content-wise for PSP games. :)

They do seem incredibly "complete" for launch titles. I just hope that the completeness boils over into quality.

Especially considering gameplay on your average DS lauch title is 1-2 min minigames.

This is what turned me off to portable gaming in the past. I've desk-drawered every handheld I've had previously because of shallow, previous-gen gameplay. It's also the reason that I could never justify actually spending any real money on handheld games themselves.

I love the fact that PSP games are more "thorough."

No one has ever played a racing game remotely comparable to Ridge Racers on Gameboy. Neither has anyone played a sports game on the same plane as Hot Shots Golf PSP on a Gameboy.

I think you know where the excitement comes from and why people are willing to shell out that amount of cash for PSP.

On a GameBoy IS the keyword, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not all that new or exciting after the first few hours.

Still, PSP rocks, don't get me wrong. :)

That's why we need REAL impressions from people we know who played it. Damn that Lumines ruining everything! :) One thing I've learnt is that 2ch is great for gameplay tips, factual information (game length, secrets, unlockables, etc), but terrible for actual impressions. Everyone on it is a typical Japanese fanboy or troll so all comments are very biased in either direction and contain very little actual information. :(

is it just me or does the EMS tracking site take forever to update? *sigh* the wait is 0wn3d me.

well I wouldn't go by their tracking. According to the tracking number I have, although it's 4 days after I've already gotten my PSP, it's still in Osaka

I think what people misunderstand about EMS is that a country's EMS tracking only lasts until the package leaves said country. After that you're supposed to check your own country's postal service site for tracking of the parcel. So say you're getting something from Japan, you only use the Japan tracking until it leaves the country, then you use the USPS site to track to check when it arrives in the US and where it goes from there. Replace said countries with whatever is relevent. :)

So portable games are now more "thorough" or "complete", eh?

Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, Pokemon, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Mario and Luigi: SuperStar Saga, Toki Tori, Metroid: Fusion, WarioLand 1-4, Starfy, Mario vs. DK, DK94, Castlevanias, and so on, were very "thorough" and "complete".

I think that the PSP is a wonderful machine, and it'll satisfy the graphics whore in all of us, but to say that the games are more thorough or complete is to completely disregard the quality titles that have graced the GB line over the years. And that is just plain wrong.

Just FYI - the third wave of PSP preorders (for delivery on 12/29) came and went on jp.playstation.com today.

Once again sold out in about a minute. Crazy...

How many of those came out a week after the launch of the system though? I'm not saying that handhelds have never had "complete" games. But firstly, they were always a generation or two behind in terms of both graphics and design (limited by being 2D is a fact, that doesn't stop them from being fun though) and how many will even last more than 15 hours? I'm not discounting the existance of solid games in handhelds in the past, simply that with the launch titles on the PSP, they're impressively massive, akin to (or even surpassing) console launches.

PSP games give the impression that you're playing a full-fledged current gen home console game in the palm of your hand. It's really amazing.

Fair enough with your assessment, but what is the difference between a 15 hour or a 30 hour game? Look at Ridge Racers, which I consider to be the best launch title on a handheld. How long is it? It's not 30 hours, not even 15. But you'll no doubt put in that many hours because it's a fun game.

I'm just trying to say that just being more hours doesn't automatically equate to being better. This is the portable market after all. These games should be easily accessible for short gaming bursts rather than the long marathons we play on our home consoles.

I imagine they do. I can't wait to get mine!!

The only thing is, that I don't really want 30-hour epics on my portable. I like those for my home entertainment center. :)

Not complaining, mind you. Just adjusting to the next gen of handheld gaming. :)

I was only comparing launch titles of any other console/handhelds.

I agree with you completely, outside of the launch window handhelds have had plenty of complete games. I can probably list over one hundred and fifty!

Oh I agree completely, which is why we want Tetsuo to drop the Lumines-crack and give us more indepth late game MGA impressions. :) But the fact is that like it or not, people in general equate longer games with value for money. There was a thread about this a few months back about "when did games become all about how long it takes to complete" or something discussing this very subject.

Hey one of my personal favorite genres are shmups, and the "clear time" on an average shooter is an hour. That doesn't mean I don't spend hours on them. The genre has a lot to do with it too, since MGA is supposed to be a strategy game the long game time just gives it that much more potential to be a hell lot more than what many of us expected (a quirky "innovative" idea slapped together in 6 months to give Sony something to show off on the PSP).

I think people are getting a tad too defensive on this PSP matter. Most of us haven't even played it, we're just expressing how we feel about the system and what we're seen, heard and read about the games and the system. None of it is meant to undermine current gaming or anything. It's a cool new device and we like what we see, plain and simple. :)

I don't know if I'm going to be able to hold off another week. I try to play some games and all I end up thinking about is the PSP. :)

I hope something comes through this week or else it's time to sell crap and buy a price-gouged system.

Damn if i was in the car with anyone on this ride it would be with Lyte Edge. Brother i know how you feel about wanting one of these bad boys so badly. I almost sold my great grandfathers ring last week just cause i saw a PSP. You'll get through it just wait till after xmas then you can take back all the gifts you got and then get a psp =P

I'm Jewish, so no Xmas gifts for me. :) Didn't get much this year for Hanukah either, although I did just get a $50 check today, so I'm basically breaking it down like this on potential funds:

-$300 from parents
-$50 check
-$160 from selling DS and games (minimum)

That's $510. Play-Asia currently has PSP Value Packs with Ridge Racers for $629. That means I only have to come up with $119 on my own, which I can just pay with in cash or sell some more gaming stuff. I also have at least $200 in loose CHANGE (could be more) which I can apply towards this system and/or games, and if I do that, I can get the system and a few games all without touching anything in my bank account. THAT'S why this is so damn tempting. :)

Ok, now I'm going to have to side with the other folks in this thread. Don't spend that much money on the PSP. Be patient, man. After the Christmas season the prices will drop at least a little bit. 629 dollars for a value pack and one game is just absurd.

Don't be a fool. Think about it for a moment with me. $627 now for PSP Value Pack + 1 game, or $627 in a month or two for PSP Value Pack + 8 games + shipping. And really aside from Lumines and Ridge Racers, the PSP games right now aren't very import friendly, why not wait closer to the rumored March US launch so once you get your J PSP + Ridge Racers + Lumines (for $300), you'll still have over 300+ bucks to spend on ENGLISH games in another month?

This is really one of those cases where logic will save your a fortune. ^^;

You'll regret spending that kind of money, Lyte..

There are people on this board that can afford to pay the outrageous prices without selling stuff or getting money from their parents. I've been in your situation before, and 3 months from now you'll regret it. (Especially if you end up buying the stuff you sold back for more than you sold it...like I've done many times).

Just hold on. Hold on.

I forgot to say that I'm using Play-Asia's price only because it seems to be the highest; I don't know if I'd get it from them or not.

Logic doesn't apply when I want something this badly. I KNOW it's dumb, but I can't help it. I'm an addict. ^_^; I used to buy Neo-Geo carts for $325+ each right up until the end of last year. (Buying SvC Chaos and SSV all in the span of a month was MURDER on my wallet!)

I figure if I can get the system by getting rid of other gaming things I already own (most of which were obtainted through trade-ins) combined with gift money, I don't care how much the system costs.

But I'm still going to wait for now. I would jump all over a system I saw for sale for $400 though, and I do know of a place I could possibly get one from for that price. Thing is, I was told you had to be a "loyal customer" to get that discount, and I've only bought one game from them in the past.

Fugimax: The money from my parents is solely for the PSP. They agreed to pay that much towards one before the price was even revealed; it's my Hanukah present from them.

Cool, but just remember that could mean a PSP and a 512mb memory stick or 2 games 3 months from now. Right now it doesn't even buy you a PSP.

I know, but I want to import a system. I definitely don't want to wait three months, and I guess it's hard for me to explain, but I like to be part of a system's launch. There's just something about the experience you get from the beginning that makes it all worth it to me; I think maybe Mashoutposse knows what I'm talking about right now. I don't care if the games are in Japanese either; that's just practice for me. If things go well over the next few months, I'm going to have to get used to it anyway since I'd be living in Japan.

This also seems to be one of the few import launches with enough actual worthwhile games.

Eh, well don't even wait 3 months. Beginning-mid january should see way cheaper PSPs (I hope).

Also, any word from tetsuo about when he'll be going out next? You could always hang in for that..

Not a word. I'm hoping that NCS' update tomorrow means lower prices, but I'm not holding my breath at this point.

About selling off games...the only thing I would regret getting rid of would be my DS, but I'm getting about as much as I paid for it, and could always pick up another system down the road if I wanted one.

Getting rid of the DS at this point is a great idea since resale values are quite high. Expect ~$200 for the used system. It's not a collectible, so take advantage of this! You can pick another up at virtually any time for MSRP after the holidays.

Well I'd want the cash as quickly as possible for what seems to be about to happen, so I'd just sell it at work tomorrow for $100 since I could get the money right away.

It would be ironic if your psp had a defect lyte edge. :lol

Just wait until feburary, you can do it.

EDIT: not against selling the DS, this is the only time where you can get at least $200 for it.

Dude...don't throw money away...jeez.

At least sell it on eBay and just have your parents lend you cash for a week or something..

A certain poster just offered me the PSP for $425 including overnight shipping. I think I'm going for it. :)
