The "Official" Japanese PSP Launch Thread (NSF56k)

Is the value pack worth it? The only thing making me want to get it is the remote...will other Sony remotes work with the thing? If so, I'm getting the regular pack when it launches in March.

I think it's a waste personally. I have an iPod and never use the remote...not to mention I would never use a PSP for music. As for the memory stick, also too small. I'm getting a 512 or 1GB.

I don't know how I could use an ipod without a remote or any music device. The iPod remote is flawed in the fact that it has no LCD screen, but MDs with LCD remotes were top notch and can't be beat.

I hate using a music player without that little remote. I've been kinda forced to use one without it for a while, and too often it's a pain in the ass.

I don't know how I could use an ipod without a remote or any music device.
1. I only need to change songs in situations where it's easy to get at the iPod (walking to class, etc.)
or
2. I make good generic playlists. (Exercise, studying, etc.)

My iPod remote sits in a drawer unused.

I've heard people saying such things before, but I really don't get it... Between chaning songs and changing the volume (which I do quite often for one reason or another) I find myself cursing too often that I can't use the remote right now. I just don't see how it can be more convinient grabing the device out of the pocket, or even just putting the hand in the pocket and fumbling with the controls, when you can have all that handy on a remote.

I never change the volume and I usually only listen in 10-15 minute segments. That could be why a remote seems unnecessary to me.

Maybe. I usually listen in much longer spans, and when I walk around the streets, I like to have volume levels different than when I walk into a store, and again different when I have to talk to a store clerk, etc...

Not so I can play games on the go, but because they offer games that cannot be found on today's consoles. When it comes to PSP, it is just basically a portable PS2.
It's basically a portable PS2 as far as capabilities go, but as far as games go, I don't see how I can play Lumines, MG:A or Vampire Chronicles on a PS2. Face it, even from this very limited launch game selection, there are games on PSP that have pretty much nothing to do with games on it's bigger brother. Even the Ridge Racers offers many things none of the previous Ridge Racers did, and seems to be a very fresh experience.

well that would explain your tredmendous insight :)
After playing the PSP I could only snicker at anyone who ended up paying $300 range for one. (I hope this wasn't you!)

Honestly for what you're getting I'm starting to question the $200 point. I'd venture to say I'd feel pretty good paying $180 for a PSP when it comes out here.

This must be a joke :lol

So portable games are now more "thorough" or "complete", eh?

Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, Pokemon, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Mario and Luigi: SuperStar Saga, Toki Tori, Metroid: Fusion, WarioLand 1-4, Starfy, Mario vs. DK, DK94, Castlevanias, and so on, were very "thorough" and "complete".

I think that the PSP is a wonderful machine, and it'll satisfy the graphics whore in all of us, but to say that the games are more thorough or complete is to completely disregard the quality titles that have graced the GB line over the years. And that is just plain wrong.

I quote on this one. I'm the first to be excited because of the fact that PSP is a hardware powerhouse and thrilled by the expectation of the quality games that will be possible to achieve on it, but 2D design or limited hardware capabilities are not a 'sure' indication of the quality of gameplay. In absolute terms, a game on GBA could be well on par on better than games on PSP (this applies to every hardware). It's just that the superior hardware has the potential advantage.

Fugimax, that's true! :)

If all goes well, I should have a PSP and Ridge Racers tuesday. I plan on getting Vampire Chronicles, Lumines, and possibly Dynasty Warriors or Minna No Golf this week as well. I will definitely write impressions with Vampire getting top priority since there isn't much talk about it here.

Anyone know which importers have games in stock right now? I'm looking at Japan Video Games at the moment, and hoping that NCS gets full restock this week. Play-Asia has everything but since they're outside the U.S. they are my last resort.

Oh I agree completely, which is why we want Tetsuo to drop the Lumines-crack and give us more indepth late game MGA impressions. :) But the fact is that like it or not, people in general equate longer games with value for money. There was a thread about this a few months back about "when did games become all about how long it takes to complete" or something discussing this very subject.

Hey one of my personal favorite genres are shmups, and the "clear time" on an average shooter is an hour.

In fact, quality of the experience > quantity of the experience for me too. I'll choose the 9 hours I spent in Ico over the 50 hours of Tales of destiny on PSone anyday.

The most important thing to me is how much thrilled I was with the game. Then longevity is a plus.

Lyte edge: userside has all the games, but i cant tell if they are out of stock or not. If they are instock then thats great cause some of there games are cheaper than other places.

I wish santa was real for one year.

The only disappointing thing I can think of about the PSP right now is that companies have agreed to not stream games off of UMD discs

I don't know about future games, but Ridge Racers is playing the music off the UMD constantly during a race. And it still lasts 5 hours. So I think that holds well for future games if they don't use the UMD, and I also think it means that Sony might be flexible for certain games (GTA anyone?)

Does anyone else think Sony need to come up with a revised PSP for kids? The current one is way too expensive looking to let loose on kids, even if its cheap. They could lose an inch off the LCD and use cheaper plastics.

Kind of the reverse of GBA-GBASP

Hm, Lumines looks/sounds hot. I'm not really interested in anything [shown] otherwise, but I'll have to keep my eye on it. There isn't a PS2 version coming perhaps?

Are you sure about this? Have you tried ejecting the disc, and trying to continue the game to see if the music will stop playing?

Yes. When you start the race, there is a brief pause, then you can feel the disc spin up and seek, then the music starts. If you remove the disc, it pauses the game but you can continue, only no music plays.

I'm pretty impressed with 5 hours with UMD on constantly.

That's great news. But before everyone starts thinking that streaming on PSP is easy thing to do, keep in mind that UMD apparently has some kind of low power mode that is being used to read data slowly, and which is good for music streaming. I think some of the devs said that here or at B3D. Still, I think that some workarounds will be found.

Yes, yes they do. Parents won't buy this for kids, especially if the screen is so smudgy...

I guess you're probably right, but then they'll be angry if the kids ruin it.

Everyone talks about how daintily they're handling their PSP, and I wonder if they can withstand the abuse that a Gameboy can... One of the Gamespot guys said he dropped his & it still works, so maybe they can... I dunno.

You can drop a GameBoy in a toilet or off a roof and it'll still work though. Think we'll get similar stress tests for PSP from EGM next March?

Price has dropped...I got an e-mail from NCS. They are now selling the PSP for $448 to pre-orders. This is not a price drop for all importers it would seem; it sounds like from their e-mail that they are stuck with $500 units and are trying to get rid of them before the price gouging ends.

I'm quite happy with my own deal though. :D

They are also restocking Lumines, Ridge Racer, and Vampire Chronicles on Wed.

I decided to go with Vampire Chronicles, Ridge Racers, Lumines, and Minna No Golf; getting all but Ridge Racers (that's coming with the PSP tomorrow) from Play-Asia and hopefully by Wed. I want to wait for more feedback on Dynasty Warriors before I take the plunge.

I doubt it. The PSP just looks like it is begging to get broken.

Those two reviews (PSP and DS) couldn't sound more fanboyish if Gigadent wrote them. I hate when someone tries to sound fair and balanced, but the agenda shines through so brightly in every sentence that it's jarring.

You know something's up when someone spends a whole paragraph talking about 'blurring' on a PSP screen, and how "Sharp doesn't really make good screens" (which is total BS), and then doesn't even mention anything about the screen quality of DS, but makes sure to mention that compared to DS, PSP has such jarring design flaws.

This whole thing reminds me a lot of all those fan sites analyses of Dreamcast and PS2, where DC was always 'proven' to come out on top no matter the spec in question.

Fucking beautiful pics :drools:

EDIT: Doesn't the DS use screens from Sharp too? Bah, it's just more mindless drivel spewed by rabid Nintendo fans who feel that they must protect the hive. The "world" is crumbling all around them.

I dunno if this was asked in one of the 40 pages, but is there a way for us to set a wallpaper for the PSP? I know a temporary one happens when you select a picture and then press one of the buttons, but I wanna know if there's a permanant one.

I would like to know if there's at least a way to change the background color at will, not just wait for the month to come by so that it changes.

Here's a question that I don't think has been addressed yet...

Are there any UMD movies and/or UMD music discs out yet? Any impressions?

No UMD movies or music discs out there yet and none are announced. The only one that comes close to this is the demo disc that comes with units that were sold off at that auction and bought directly from Sony.

Those demo discs were freely available on launch day. I got one with each of my PSPs and threw 'em in free for the people who bought them. Dunno if you can still get them now or not, but there didn't seem to be any shortages or anything.

Hmm, heh hope Sony ships one with mine. =)

You mean other than FF VII: Advent Children, right? ;)

Don't hold your breath for any for at least 6-12 months. Sony has backburned so far back it'll take a while for any to see the light of day.

OK, next mission is to get hold of one of these. Anyone know where you can get them from?

I saw a bunch on Yahoo Auctions Japan, dunno if that helps you any (did you say you have relatives in Japan?)...

Dunno how much they are selling for, though, wasn't paying close attention...

For those who have the UMD Demo Disc, in the Music section, what's the name of the girl who sings "Lights"? It's ____ Eri.

EDIT: nevermind, it's Nobuchika Eri. I have to buy her Lights single...
