Which file has Hustler in it? I'm at work so can't really go through any of the stuff.

BTW, is that the AVH remix? If so, you are godly for bringing that track back!

In other news: DIM played at my local on Sunday night. About A HUNDRED FUCKING PEOPLE showed up... pathetic. Played some pretty decent shit, though, including:

Danse en France (DIM remix)
Is You
Disco Sirens (DIM remix)
Mr. Oizo - Positif
Worry About It Later (Switch remix)

...yet, didn't play his remix of My People. A track by an Australian band WHILE HE WAS IN AUSTRALIA. Go figure. Either way, still good to hear something different, though.

But I reckon I could do better ;)

Sounds like he's just been playing the same set. I saw him at boys noize last week and then and the after party, and he played pretty much the same set hahaha. D.I.M was pretty good. Boys noize was pretty awesome too!

2 x Pioneer CDJ400's
1 x Korg Kaoss KM-202 Mixer (aka the 'Jesus Mixer')

The full set is 5 hours 27 minutes and 111 (count 'em!) tracks long, it includes:

Track #4 was RELLIK, the first play ANYWHERE in the WORLD of ADAM SKY (aka ADAMSKI)'s remake of the best electronic track of the 90' > KILLER! :D

Shame. This is why I FUCKING HATE sequencers for "live" gigs. DJs get lazy.

I do agree though.

Ableton Live has a bit of an ironic name if you use it in the wrong way for a live set ...

Personally, I prefer the old-school 2 decks + a mixer set-up =)

With a Kaoss Mixer no 2 sets will EVER be the same ... ;)
The Kaoss Mixer isn't a sequencer, though ;)

Although, I have no problem with a "DJ" who can put together a set that's relatively different each time using a sequencer like Ableton or Acid Pro. Just look at what Daft Punk did at each of their shows... essentially the same, yet still different enough to keep you intrigued.

Which is why, whenever I'm knocking up a mix for my site (www.shaneus.com) I *always* do live mixes and never use anything pre-programmed. Sure, it might not sound as clean as a computer screen that's been fawned over for hours to get everything perfect, but damnit, it's honest. And you know what you're getting when you see me play without a computer screen.

Otherwise, I might as well just be using Windows Media Player to play a .WAV I knocked up earlier in the day, without any feedback from the audience (which is what I consider *critical* to putting together a stellar set).

Excuse the rambling, but it's something I'm intensely passionate about. Nothing shits me more than a DJ who becomes lazy and stops being creative.

I agree competely, which I've ignored everyone who told me to just use Ableton.

Being able to respond instantly to the music (and the crowd) as you 'feel' it takes a set to a whole new level.

I wouldn't be anywhere NEAR as proud of my Requiem For A Dream set with it's shitloads of Kaoss effects if I'd been slaving over it for a month, rather than doing it off-the-cuff on the night.

... and it probably wouldn't have sounded anywhere as good (or as creative) if I'd taken that approach =)

I would rather not hear a live set where the DJ simply plays entire tracks end-to-end. You have to be able to create something new and different, not a playlist of your favorite tracks.

So from what I've read here, you don't like DJs who have a set playlist? I mean, I have a set playlist, but since I always carry my library with me, which allows me to improvise within the set list on the fly, I seem to ALWAYS deviate. Usually when I do gigs, I'll have about an hour or two to just mix some music, but by the end of the night my playlist is completely not what I had at the beginning, although the genre remains the same (Electro/House/Disco House). Plus, if you have good track selections and manage to drop the right songs at the right time, that's all that matters. If you have good taste, you can highlight great tracks from pop music on down to a white label test pressing of a record no one else has.

To me, 90% of DJing is:

1) track selection
2) track order
3) reading the crowd to choose 1 and 2

What I do usually is follow a few requests and play similar music for a while and then gradually fall back at what I want to play. It never fails. The only problem I hate when you're a DJ is when you have a gig or throw a live set somewhere and you get all of these jackasses requesting songs that just do not mesh well, or they have some sort of "insider" song that just kills the entire floor.

Hmm... what about the beatmatching? Maybe it's because some of my first DJ mixes I've ever listened to were the extremely tightly-mixed Sasha and Digweed albums - intricate, subtle progressive where mixes were held for 2+ minutes at a time - but effective and smooth transitions are very important... nothing quite pulls me out of the moment then when I hear clanging or trainwrecking.

I usually play for friends and they only really want to hear the house or trance... I sometimes start off with a bit of minimal/tech-house and I get yelled at for 'dragging on'. Then I'll play some of the more commercial house and people seem to love that.

I don't have a problem with DJs who have guidelines as to what they play (in fact, that's what I prefer if it's regular)... if it's a residency, obviously the crowd has favourites that the DJ would be stupid NOT to play. But when you see a guest/big-name/one-off DJ play, uses Ableton and plays EXACTLY the same set everywhere he goes... that's what shits me off. Might as well have just downloaded a set rip or an Essential Mix for that's about as "live" as you get.

But yeah, you nailed it... I was just a little too hard-and-fast into what I consider live/on the fly and what I don't. Just got a little TOO passionate ;)

Literally the WHOLE bar started dancing when Freestyler came on! "Yeah, straight from the top of my dome, as I rock-the-rock-the-rock-the-rock-the microphone!" :D :D :D
Can I just say, you get a SHITLOAD of kudos for not only playing Freestyler, but LONELINESS! I can't believe how much that track still goes right off it's head, despite its age.

I *really* wanna see you live, now! Come to Australia :D

PS. Liked the effects, too... although, some of them sounded a little *too* digital, if you know what I mean. I tend to prefer effects that are a little warmer and analogue-sounding. But that's just me :)

Awww, cheers mate!

Yeah, DECK'ARD is all about the loved but forgotten, the unappareciated, the unreleased, the rare, and well as well-know, current and unreleased stuff. My sets are designed to be very uplifting, because life is too short and when you stop dancing you stop LIVING ;)

Never been to Australia, always wanted to. I have a couple of friends who moved out there. So if I ever pay a visit, I'll make sure I pack my decks and mixer ...

I'm only using a handful of the Kaoss effects at the moment, as I learn and remember them. The ones I've got in my sets are the ones I instantly took to and could see how they could be applied and when. There's a 100 in total to learn, and some of them are analog effects like a vinyl-scratch. So the sound of my sets should change as time goes on.

I LOVE analog sounds as well, that's the reason I stumbled across the Korg mixer. Korg <3
