The Official "New Super Mario Bros." (DS) Thread!

On the world map in the top left hand corner.

Off topic, but has Swap USA gone out of business or what? I wanted to call them about Earth Defense Force 2, but their numbers aren't working. And www.swapusa.com is some kind of bullshit casino page.

Hey, anyone know where the third giant coin is in the World 1 final castle? The two visible ones were easy enough to get. Figured the boss would be holding the third, but I defeated him using both methods, and no dice! :(

I know you got it, but I just found this myself. Pretty cleverly hidden too. ;)

Thankfully the game gets cleverer (is that a word?) and more innovative as the game goes along. First level in the snow world is super awesome.

I was going to pick this up tonight, but it looks like Gamefly already shipped it, so I'l be playing in a few days....I can't wait!

just got it(actually got it around 12 pm but that was for friend, rafman,[he posts here] (it was his bday and he had surgury and what not) ) But i just got my own copy and im about to play it!!!!!!!!!
:D

Gamestop still didn't have it in so I called up Gamecrazy and they had a bunch. Been playing about 1 1/2 hours, fun fun fun.

great game, but now i know why it's called New Super Marios Bros instead of Super Mario Bros 4. The game isn't breaking any new ground and is a total throw back to the original 1/3. The overworld is a step back from Super Mario World and the gameplay isn't adding anything new. More of the same is never a bad thing, especially when it comes to 2d mario goodness. I love it so much, but Nintendo went easy on this title.

The Megafoo gives is it a 9/10

Hmm.. Worth a buy though?

Level 2-6 kinda dissapointed me. It starts off with a great idea but the game doesn't run with it and the level just became dull and incedibly easy.

I think Toasty Frog may have been right about this game not being all that it could be.

Hmm.. Worth a buy though?
Definitely.

definitely worth the purchase. You will enjoy it from start to finish. But if you are like me, you will be slightly dissapointed that NSMB isn't a step up from Super Mario World.

When I was a boy and New Super Mario Bros. came to East Germany, the Communists said it was subversive. Maybe they were right.

I just picked it up on the Circuit City sale and man, is it great so far.

However, I do REALLY think (based on the first 3 worlds at least) that this game is, in fact, the correct sequel to Super Mario Bros. we never got. No, I'm not talking about SMB2j/The Lost Levels either. For those who recall, the original sequel to SMB was a disappointment internally and wasn't released in the US because it was little more than a level extension (with some evil new tricks) of the first game. So the amalgam Super Mario Bros. 2 was created, which is still a great game, but also not a true or direct sequel.

NSMB is so /totally/ like a real sequel to the original game, it's uncanny. It is evolved but still using many of the same concepts and mechanics. And so far that's working perfectly for me.

Got Worlds 1 and 2 finished with all star coins collected. Fun fun fun game. I can't wait to see what World 8 looks like this time.

I think I will probably feel those sentiments as well.

My import is already shipped, so I HOPE it comes in within the next couple of days...

The official site has me all pumped up for the game again - a really nicely-done website Nintendo...

Picked it up at EB after going to Target and Walmart, who didn't have it. I hate supporting EB, but I had to have the game today.

Quite simply, it rocks! Yeah, it's nothing innovative in terms of gameplay, but it's so much fun. The background graphics look a lot better in-game than they do in screens - I'm pretty impressed with the visuals overall. My only complaint is the somewhat floaty control. I've mistimed a lot of jumps so far, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Must have for DS owners.

game finished, all levels unlocked (edit: still need to find some exits)

and 4 hours playing in versus mode

that's why I want a mario party now

Argh, why is nobody in San Francisco selling this game yet. I want to squish goombas.

The EB Games on Powell has a few left for non-preorders. Gogogo!

It's funny cause the Virgin Megastore is not selling their stock until tomorrow, but the girl behind the counter was like "Psst. I picked up my copy down the street this morning..."

the models in nsmb are flawless due to the distance and style--I can only hope that a proper smash bros can find its way to ds with this kind of graphic flair

As has become the norm for me this year I can't find a new game day one yet again. I was at CC before, at and after 5 and they didn't get it in. -_-

Really awesome so far!

A bit disappointed that in its similarities to the NES games rather than World, but it still rocks.

I suppose the negatives are more interesting as we KNOW the gameplay owns.

Music isn't bad, but it is nowhere NEAR as good as the older games.

The visuals look great, but I prefer the clean lines of Mario 3 and Mario World to the more detailed look here. Also, as I don't have a Lite yet, the colors look really dull.

The controls are a bit floaty more like the original SMB, which I'm not fond of, but it still feels pretty good.

Pretty minor complaints, though. Super Mario World is one of my very favorite games of all time and there is a lot of nostalgia tied up in there (though I DO still play the game regularly, so the differences in gameplay really stood out). We've all waited a very long time for a new 2D Mario game and I think the results are actually really good...just not as good as what many of us have likely imagined during the last decade. :P

Anyone know if the Fry's in Burbank has it yet? I plan on heading up that way after work to check but I wanted to see if anyone had any luck with them yet.

they really should have had a soundtrack option--maybe a classic tracks vs. new tracks selection. hell, it can't take that much space to shove the original nes midis onto the cart. it's a little more confusing, being as how they use the original nes midi to promote it.

it takes a little getting used to the "heavy" mario again, being as how modern mario is a spry little bastard that can run and jump like nobody's business.

wow, after everyone was taking sides with the 8/10 1up review, i was prepared to be underwhealmed... but now that I've played for about 45min, taken several alternatuve endings, and ended up in the snow world, all I can say Mario has the Nintendo spirit, and anyone saying otherwise is just looking for the worst in an awsome experience :)

New Super Mario Bros. == Super Mario Bros. 2, the Definitive Version

:D

Some pretty disappointing impressions at the other forum, including from Olimario. Is this game really all that?

I can't believe it was developed by NST as well...

I thought Tezuka handled this one?

Well if it's NST that made it then I can only say, kudos NST. That would make it the second game in a row that's quality.

Wooooooo, got one of the last three copies at EB. Now do I start it today or wait to crack it open on my 15-hour flight tomorrow?

Something tells me I could probably finish it on that same flight. :\

the first world is mario through and through, but man, my ds lite is killing my hands. portables mainly bother me in games where i have to hold down a button from the top row while pressing a button from the bottom row...maverick hunter x on psp, and now mario on ds lite. i need to find some kind of grip peripheral.
