The Official "New Super Mario Bros." (DS) Thread!

I agree New Super Mario Bros. is pretty unattractive mish-mash of graphics, but it's not really surprising with the direction they went. Definitely should always stick with pure 2D sprites for DS.

In any event, I'm having a really good time with it. It's not blowing my mind, but it's definitely a worthy addition to the DS library. Definitely not better than Castlevania, though, sorry Jeff-DSA.

wait where did oli post his impressions, I don't see them.

I like the game, I'm just really dissapointed with how basic it is.

Halfway through World 5 now (no warping for me first time through, 100% completion) and I gotta say the game is very good. It's no 10 for sure, but it's still great fun, every bit a 9.0 in my opinion.

I really like the mini-castle and castle layouts, as well as the ghost houses. Some of the other levels are a little uninspired, namely parts of World 4.

Looks like Nintendo lied about there being more powerups, unless there's something yet waiting in World 6 through 8. And I've only come across Lakitu a couple of times if I remember right. Oh well.

There really is a lot of new stuff in this game though, landscape-wise especially that affects gameplay. You have to hand it to N for putting a fairly new spin on things.

Will I ever be able to save anywhere? Or do I have to go beat a Fortress every time I'm done playing?

Sometimes when you use star coins to open areas on the map (like when you open up to 3-A, for example) the game will prompt you to save. Otherwise, seems to be fortresses.

Yea, but what happens when I run out of those? I'd better be able to save anywhere at that point.

Whoa! Multiplayer mode is fucking great. Just played- not kidding here- about four hours of Mario vs Luigi. Jesus christ they didn't know what they had on there hands. Nintendo should release a standalone MvL game with tons more levels. You want a great drinking game for two gaming nerds then look no further. My cup is empty.

wow! this game is so fun! they really simplified it more than super mario world you can tell. definately feels more like a super mario 3 type of game.
i love super mario world and bros 3 so for me either way would have been good.
but wow this game is just pure fun like a platformer should be.
very impressed!!

Played for about 4 hours, and I must say the music is not so great, graphics are ok to meh. Gameplay is fun at times, sometimes its meh.

Some of the tunes I quite like (ghost houses, fortresses, star music which is the same as before, underground levels) but that world 1-1 tune (which sucks, IMO) is just used way too much.

I think the gameplay is excellent myself, although I had to get used to the wall jump. What is it about the gameplay that bothers you?

I don't get the complaints about the graphics. It looks great to me -- downright charming in most places (don't care for the overworld map so much). But so far there's not too much depth to the gameplay. I'm on the 3rd world; hope it gets better.

Just finished playing a lot of the game. I'm loving it thus far. I unlocked everything in world 1 and am about halfway through world 2, and I'm loving it thus far. The music isn't bad, and the game looks ggood as well - especially the underwater levels.

Quick question, though - sometimes when I beat the levels, it gives me the classic ring from the original Super Mario Bros., complete with fireworks and everything (awesome), but othe times it doesn't.

What determines whether you get the classic ring or the NSMB ring?

I've gotten it (with corresponding fireworks) with the timer ending in 1, 2, 7, and 9. I'm thinking, though, that maybe you have to have two consecutive digits in the timer (when I got 2, my time was 122 I think). If somebody has the strategy guide, let us know.

According to GameFAQS...

Original Mario Bros theme and fireworks

If you beat a level with a time left of x11, x22, x33, or x44 you get fireworks and the original mario level completion song will play.

Well, Petey Piranha's been in tons of games. Peach, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Kart DD, Pinball Land, etc.

Marked as spoiler for your convenience.

Yeah, but I was THIS close to determining that SMS got the shaft. :P

If you want to be really picky, those circular disks you butt-slam in the underground levels are basically the manhole covers from Sunshine.

and the palm trees lol

I'm at the last world, cleared quite a bit of one of the paths (haven't gotten the two bottom branch worlds opened)...the game still rocks hard. visually, it cannot be stressed enough: PERFECT. simplistic visuals that take cues from the prior games, 3D characters with proper (well, scripted) lighting for dramatic flair, and some nice elemental effects make for graphic love.

of course, this makes for a split of sorts in the 2D series.

new super mario bros., which is the way to classic platforming nirvana
super paper mario, a sidestory with more emphasis on storyline and less on badass platforming

they can go BOTH ways, honestly, because both ways are equally awesome.

mario's back, bitches.

Dunno why there are complaints about the visuals, I think they're quite charming. I really love this game. I can see myself playing through it many times.

This is officially my favorite DS game after a day of owning it, displacing Mario Kart DS.
And no, RE: Deadly Silence was never, ever my favorite DS game. :P

I am so bloody sick of Petey Piranha. Such a worthless character that's made it into so many games. He made it into Mario & Luigi 2 as well. There must be some BIG joke Nintendo's got that I'm not getting

Yeah, that is pretty awesome. Homage to the original Famicom game.

Bought the game at 5:00pm, beat it at just around midnight in between eating dinner, watching southpark, etc. Now time to backtrack and find everything I missed.

Cool game.

I found that it's a better idea to warp your way through the game first and then go for 100%, as after you beat the game once you can save at any time on the overworld, not just after castles.

Also, I've found the blue shell to be extremely useful in the Boo House levels. You can kill ghosts with ease and can blaze through the whole level in a couple of minutes with it (atleast the world 3 & 5 ones).

Beat everything in the first two worlds thus far.
They should have used the 1-3 music for as many levels as they used the 1-1 music, but other than that, this is good and successfully translated a good portion of the 3D games' new moves into the 2D world.
Game is probably somewhere around an 8.9-9.1 to me. (For reference, Super Princess Peach is an 8.5, Super Mario World is a 9.4, and Yoshi's Island is a 9.8.)

[about how SMS made its mark in this game]
Petey the Pirahna
I'm not even there yet, but even in the first world you had
walking on the springy tightropes
.

Got up to world 2, going to backtrack now to unlock some stuff I missed in world 1.

The graphics are okay. I think a hand drawn look would please the hardcore Mario-ites more, but that artstyle has been overused to death. Aesthetically, what's missing from this game is whimsy. The clouds should have eyes, and the hills and bushes too. Instead the game looks like the All-Star Mario games for the 16-bit machines, something I never really enjoyed.

As for the gameplay it's a bit more complex than before, but it's a lot of fun. The levels are short and sweet and has all the Mario hallmarks. One thing that sticks to mind are those springy mushroom platforms. There are great new gameplay additions They are hilariously fun and can mess with my timing.

I agree with this.

Bah! YELLOW BOX!!! Eat that!!

10 Days? 10 DAYS? I MUST WAIT ANOTHER 1 MONTH AND 2 WEEKS TILL IT'S OUT HERE IN EUROPE!

THANK YOU NINTENDO! >:(

I got this today around 3 pm, and probably beat it in about 4.5 hours. I got 100% completion on world 1, but the rest I need to go back and grab the coins, etc. It's a fun game, but it makes me wonder why we don't get one of these every year or two?

Yeah the game is fun but... after playing for a bit I almost want to stop playing and just wait for Super Paper Mario, which just looks so much more exciting from that trailer. This almost feels like a stopgap for that game.

Shit, I should`ve preordered at the same store as you, Budokai. I get off work after stores close that day. If you picked up a copy for me, could I pay you back?

I can try, but I am not sure if they will let me buy two copies....

Graphics are BRILLIANT. This game wouldn't have been half the game if it didn't use 3D models, it opens up for these moves (which would look silly otherwise) and a dynamic not seen in earlier 2D marios. The wall jump is great.
