The Official "New Super Mario Bros." (DS) Thread!

I got the game last night and haven't been able to play it anywhere near as much as I'd like (darn school). Still I'm very pleased with the game. My first impressions were that of total nostalgia, like playing SMB1 all over again. I played it a little more after class and started to really dig it on its own merits. I beat the first world, without unlocking hardly any secret paths, so there's definitely replay to be had.

Honestly, I've probably put as much time into the mini-games as I have the main game. Man, they are so fun! I didn't get SM64DS so it's all new to me. I like the Shy Guy stomping game and all the card games (it's Luigi's Casino!)

I agree with the guy who said it's the best $30 he's put down on gaming in awhile. It's been far TOO long since Mario had a game like this. It's platforming bliss.

Hopefully, I'll get to put some time into the multiplayer tonight.

Trading it in later today.

Haha.

Anyway, it was really REALLY different from what I was expecting. It really is as though only Super Mario Bros. existed in the series prior to this game. I was expecting something more along the lines of NEW Super Mario Bros. 3 or World or something.

That's understandable. Though if you paid more attention, Nintendo always said SMB was the title where this one drew its inspiration from, hence the title.

well your the only one at fault here...its been stated over and over that this is more of a new version of the "classic" super mario bros. Pics alone should have told you that.

You didn't read any previews on it at all? They said they were trying to simplify it back to SMB1-style gameplay. I think that's a good thing.

Go ahead and trade it in... Just stay out of this thread once you do, mmkay?

The curse of a semi-media blackout I guess.

Got it. *AWESOME* game ... classic Mario goodness ... there's no substitute and no one does it better than Nintendo.

The 3D graphics provide a more dynamic look to the levels ala Yoshi's Island but with better effects. Very cool.

This game alone justifies the price tag of the DS alone.

Bring on New Super Mario Bros. 2 please :)

The King is back.

The thing I really miss is the ability to fly. No Racoon suit, no cape, no hat nothing. Mario just dosn't feel the same anymore with out the ability to take to the sky.

I'm a bit annoyed at the constant overuse of the fireflower so far. I wish that they had mixed up the power ups a bit more *sigh*9 0% of the time it feels like Mushroom, flower, mushroom, flower.

The micro one is good for getting all the coins and unlocking hidden levels but it's worthless in a fight. I wonder how good the blue shell is in a boss fight. So far I haven't managed to keep it that long.

You can fly on the cloud left by a lakitu when you kill it with a fireflower

this game is amazing and imo deserves no less than a 9. Above awesome platforming and lots of things to do besides go through levels like get all the coins, secret paths, multiplayer, and minigames.

Beat everything in the first two worlds thus far.
They should have used the 1-3 music for as many levels as they used the 1-1 music, but other than that, this is good and successfully translated a good portion of the 3D games' new moves into the 2D world.
Game is probably somewhere around an 8.9-9.1 to me.
I'm two more worlds in now and I take back what I said about the score; it's more like an 8.5. (Which, insanely, means this is actually my second least favorite of my DS games.)

I don't know what's wrong, but just... something. Maybe the checkpoints, but I agree with GDjustin's review where he said that the levels seem to end just as they're hitting their stride. I'd say that I agree with the 1Up review too, but they called it a "B+ effort" and I say more like a "B effort."

i'm thinking the problem that a lot of people are having with this game is that they are simply not kids anymore.
when you are a kid you just sit on the carpet for hours playing over and over and hearing new secrets from your friends and getting excited and trying them out.
If we judged games (or movies, for that matter) by what kids think of them, even trashy licensed games would get 10/10 scores...

I have yet to play the game, but it seems like nostalgia is putting a damper on what is a solid package. Everyone expects it to live up to their childhood memories, which is impossible. Nostalgia fogs the mind, and Nintendo fans are the masters of nostalgia. :)
Not for me. I bought the GBA Yoshi's Island when it hit Player's Choice last month and I breezed through that thing in a day and it ended all too soon. Similar with when I beat the GBA Super Mario World in a day back in 2002.

NSMB is more of a chore. Again, I don't know why. Maybe it's because putting in the star coins slows down the pace compared to other Mario games, where you don't worry about anything except running through and beating the level.

i'm surprised by some of these reactions. maybe people's expectations were just too high. i think you have to approach new smb the way you approach a new album from david bowie or elvis costello or someone. is it as good as smb3 or smw? obviously not. but it's awfully good in its own right...and you're sort of relieved that nintendo haven't embarrassed themselves. the graphics are charmless and the music is weak, but otherwise i'm having a really good time. i mean...it's a 2d mario game...and i don't already know what all the levels are like! that's something.

Yeah, it's so wierd. It's familiar but new. I'm not used to a NEW SMB game period that is 2D.

The game is as good as the other ones, it's just that some of our tastes have matured or changed and we expect more, that's all.

It's addictive. Just to play a level at a time every once in a while is the best way to approach it for me. That way, I don't overdose on it too much.

well since you went there... i think any spongebob squarepants game that is loved by every single kid that plays it should get a 9/10 score. because it's pleasing the exact market it's intended for.

i hate football games... so in my head john madden football = 1/10 because that is about the amount of fun i will have with it. but i would never suggest it should *really* be rated that way in magazines because it should be rated on a scale of how much football fans will like it.

about mario.. all i meant was that it's a lot of fun unless you are looking at it in a weird context about what review score it should get and where it falls within the other games in the series. to me it's just another toy and i just want to play it. and i think kids are better at having fun actually playing a game without caring about the politics behind it.

I'm in World 6 right now; definitely enjoying it so far. I know I'll be going back to try to find all the secrets after I'm done.

Now, about the music - though it's good, I think it's still lacking. I wish there was more of a variety of tunes, instead of just the same few songs used over and over in each world. It just doesn't feel right when I'm in a (minor World 6 level spoiler ahead, I suppose) mountainous level with bullet bills all over, and there's bouncy, cheerful music in the background. I don't mean I want "epic" music (this isn't a RPG), but it would be nice to have some more fitting tunes.

I think your thoughts are just as much in line with anyone else who thinks its an 8.0/.5 level game. It IS good in its own right, but lacks that little extra bit of punch in certain areas. I found some stages really fun, but like Justin, I'm disappointed in how short they are. SMB3 was much better at the stage length/challenge game and I wish NSMB would've emulated the experience more from that perspective.

I'm puzzled over my reactions...

I played through three worlds last week and felt like it was a strong "8.0" game.

I started over yesterday with my own copy and it feels... better. I'm tempted to give it a 9.0 now.

The problem is that it's too much like a mildly evolved SMB and not enough like SMB3... it's good, but it's painful to see how much better it could have been. The game grows on you once you get over the disappointment of it not being as good as SMB3, but it still feels lacking.

Good, but not quite great.

But that's just the thing. EAD wasn't TRYING to make it like SMB3. It was trying to make it more like SMB, which is what they recreated almost exactly. For what they set out to do, they fucking NAILED. I suspect that maybe Nintendo will continue the "New" line and make games that are similar to the old versions of the SMB games. Maybe not, but that would seem quite logical.

In short, NSMB is just that: New SUPER MARIO BROS 1. And because of that, it suceeds amazingly.

Got my copy for $30 CAD due to a Walmart pricing snafu. I just played through the first world and the floaty mechanics are a definite throwback to SMB. Pretty fun so far. :)

Well, I'm not talking about taking the themes/enemies/power-ups/etc. right from SMB3. Just the length/challenge of the levels.

"well i dunno.. the geometric landscapes in super mario world gave it a better feel" and instead will just keep getting that super sized mushroom and running over green pipes..

wa-hoo!

haha, i knew someone would call me on that.

to be fair to the game i played some more after that and i think i kinda just expected the wrong thing. when i started hitting some challenging levels, the 'keep playing' aspect was still there and i wanted to beat them, which is more than i can say for many other games recently, so theyve done something right :P i'll give it some more playtime later :)

i think maybe too much GAF gaming board time has turned me into an overanalytical asshole :p

i'd put it down to my high expectations and not the actual quality of the game.

I, too, keep wanting to come back to the game, but playing NSMB like failed masturbation, you keep edging right up to the climax, but finish somewhat unsatisfied.

Meh, I'm closing in on beating the game and I feel like it's too soon. The fact that two worlds were somehow skipped (??) is probably why, I guess I'll have to go find out how to get them. But it used to be you had to complete every world, unless you found a secret. Now it's you have to find a secret to complete every world, which I don't like.

Still, the game is fun, if not lacking a bit in the flying department.

Yeah, I don't understand that. Perhaps they thought some people might not want to "have to" play through every world? I certainly want to. :-/
