The Official "New Super Mario Bros." (DS) Thread!

I don't know about anyone else... but if I want a Super Mario World experience, I'd rather go ahead and just play that game. Same with SMB3.

I think NSMB has the right combination of features from each of the games that makes it worth playing. It's a fairly short game, but the levels are fun and the branching paths (although minimal) are nice.

I can't believe there are so many people dissapointed in this game.

I went to my local store today and they had the game running at demo kiosks.

This game is just magical. Count me in on the people who think it has the magical touch. I only played world one, but it was still amazing.

I might actually wake up early to pick it up when it hits stores just so I can play it all day.

HOLY SHIT.

I just on a whim handed the game over to my non-gamer girlfriend.

It's been an hour, she's beaten the first world and she's interjecting comments of shock and awe and glee every few minutes while I work across the room.

Not sure what to think.
Buy Super princess peach for her STAT.
I did that and my girlfriend beat the game, bowser and everything. It's literally the perfect platform game for a girl.

Yeah I am gonna see if my girlfriend can get into Mario. She already has a Lite and Brain training. We will see....

And just a question for the people dissapointed in the game:

Has there been a 2d platformer in the last 5 years that is anywhere near the level this game is? I mean, seems like a lot of you were expecting waaay to much from this game.

Klonoa 2?

I'll go with that one.

Klonoa 2.

Haha pretty interesting considering that was around 5 years ago too.

Just saying most of you are expecting too much. I think it is just an accomplishment that they didn't fuck it up completely. I mean look at how many other classic franchises have been bastardized.

Less than two months away from five years, but it ain't five years.

US dates are the dates I'm counting! 2 months away from five years- the right way.

They didn't make a new game for the US

If New SMB came out in Japan and was like the best platformer ever, would you not count it just because it's in Japanese? :|

having cleared World 5, best game on DS so far.

god some of the levels in World 5 were fucking genius.

don't expect SMB3 awesomeness here, the game plays more like a modern take on SMB.

it rox buy it.

fuck the haters - my game of the year so far!

if you loved any other 2d mario game you will love this - its ace.

dont listen to me, im a grouchy old coot.

take the game for what it is - an update 'based' on the original SMB, and you'lll have a blast.

(but listen to that second line :P )

I get the feeling its not better than anything we've seen before though. I mean SMW released, what, 16 years ago? Is it too much to expect some kind of improvement? An evolution of the genre?

I'll still buy it, but hearing about a new super mario game not being totally awesome, like 9.5 or 10 material is really shocking; I mean didn't nintendo want this to be the best Mario bros game?

I really hope I'm not as disappointed as some of you guys. I'm expecting a modernised Super Mario Brothers though, always have, but I also expected its level design to be on par with the later 2D titles (especially SMB3), that's not the case no?

I dunno, I am personally just happy that Nintendo is willing to breathe life into a practically dead genre. Like I mentioned earlier, last five years and how many great platformers?

see, if you are expecting something like SMW in terms of innovation with the genre you are going to be very disappointed.

I was disappointed at first because SMB3 is my favorite platformer of all time and my second best game ever and SMW is an incredible game too so I came in with very high expectations, but seriously NSMB is a great game and to me the best there is on the DS right now.

my only complaint now is the ost which fucking sucks.

Yeah, thats why Im glad Ive been following this thread. Ive toned down my expectations a little. Ill just try to enjoy the game.

i don't think so.

some people enjoyed klonoa 2, but for me it was a pretty boring platformer, nowhere near the standard of the super mario games.

imo nsmb is easily the best 2d platformer since the amazing yoshi's island.

it's a new nintendo game, and it's gaf. I think you will enjoy it.

Heh, yeah, Klonoa 2 was a standout. I actually like it better than this new Mario, to be honest, as it had a true wow factor along with fantastic gameplay, visuals, and audio.

There is one aspect of the new Mario I really wish had been put to more use; the wall jump. The levels that use this heavily are brilliant and I would kill for more of them.

I like how Nintendo releases the first new mario bros game in 15 years and we don't get a sticky!

I still don't have the game, ordered it off bestbuy but they were out of stock. They seem to have it in stock again so i hope they ship it today.

Viewtiful Joe, anyone? Or how about the portable Castlevanias and Metroids? Klonoa 2? Alien Hominid? Not to say that Mario isn't spectacular, but to declare that this is the only great platformer around is short-sighted.

I don't see the complaints people have. Probably just another case of GAF's circle of complaining, where one person starts bitching and pretty soon it becomes a contest to see how cynical they can get.

And I play that game plenty, but I just can't justify it here.

If I look at a calendar, it's been maybe 13 years since I've played a 2D platformer that I liked.

I like NSMB. A lot. If only because it's the first palatable 2D platformer to come out in that time. I don't care about nostalgia, but this is new content in a gameplay update to one of my favorite games of all time.

So yeah, if SMW or SMB3 had come out two or three years ago, then this came out, I'd probably not be all that excited about it. But the fact that it's been so long since there's been a decent platformer almost mandates that its design "go back to the basics" a bit. I'm not sure if I could even handle a platformer as sprawling as SMW as a result.

i don't think new smb deserves all this negativity either, but if you haven't enjoyed a 2d platformer in 13 years, that's only a commentary on your own playing habits.

I really wouldn't include Metroidvanias when talking about 2D platformers, but eh.

I have already said Klonoa 2 is great, but that was 5 years ago. Viewtiful joe is great but nowhere near mario status.

I didn't say it is the only one, I am talking about Mario calibur stuff here. <shrug> It is a whole other level, and that is one of the reasons you are seeing people dissapointed.

edit: beaten by matlock.

I just started reading through the thread and noticed a lot of bitching. I'd like to know, for those who hate/like the game, how old are you?

The reason I ask is not because of maturity but rather, because people who grew up on mario, people who were kids (and alive for that matter) when SMB1 was out and have played every mario game to death since they came out will probably have a similar point of view to me. People who are new to mario and went back and played the originals now won't feel the same way.

So old school gamers, what do you think?
New age gamers, what about you?

I was expecting a SMB3 type of game I mean a game that would blow the fuck away from me, I was disappointed at first because my expectations were very very very high.

but truth be told this is an awesome game the best there is on the DS right now.

my girlfriend and i picked up 2 copies at circuit city the other day for $27. we're both having ridiculous fun with the game--NSMB far exceeded both of our expectations. maybe i just prepared myself to not hype it up too much, tinting my impressions of the game with SMB3 nostalgia.

while the saving system seems a bit wonky, i find the game to be sufficiently challenging. i only got 4.5 hours of sleep last night because the game kept me playing and i couldn't get the damn 3 coins in level 2-5.

Or how bout gamers who just don't want the same shit anymore with better graphics? I'm 20 and I literally grew up on Mario, and I wanted something more. Like the posted said above, it's been 16 years you'd think we'd get an advancement in the series.

Super Mario Galaxy seems like the next advancement no? How about Super Paper Mario? Come on, you seem to be disregarding Mario's leap to 3D as well.

This is more of a return to Mario's roots, always was the plan with this game.

Wow, I'm so disappointed. And I haven't even played it yet. You guys are really killing my excitement over a new Super Mario in years. I was seven when SMB1 came out and literally grew up on the platformers. I loved Super Mario 64, but SMS was boring.

I was hoping this game would be fantastic, but it just sounds bad. Or at least "decent". Fuck, if I wanted "decent", I'd pick up the hundreds of "decent" games in the budget DS section of my local ShopKo. I want fuck-all awesome. I want hidden routes and secret locations and a big, varied map. I want levels with blocks everywhere and dozens of enemies coming at me at once, ala SMW. I want secrets, lots of them, in every level. I want great powerups. And I want a great fucking soundtrack. It sounds like I get none of that.

We get new moves, new modes, new levels with new features. What more do you want. We've had more experimental 2D platformers from nintendo at a steady pace since SMW... But people begged for a classic 2D mario game and that's what they gave us. A mix of all that made them great..with 'advancement' in moves.. This is what all of us yearned for.. YES, we want all-new stuff, all new genremixes. But does it bother you to get another sequel to the greatest platforming series ever, one of the kind we haven't seen in 16 years. It's one of the best handheld games ever made, solid, with endless replay value. In this case the "same shit" is the finest gameplay ever to grace the 2D gaming world.

Actually, you get all of that, stop whining and buy the damned game.

Same thoguhts when I went into the game as well, hell I still got enjoyment out of Mario 64DS...this one? Not so much. Fuck the defenders who defend EVERYTHING Nintendo and Mario...so much more could have been done with this game. It's a good game just set that expectation bar doooown.

Actually no, it's not the finest gameplay ever to grace a 2D gaming world. I think we all wanted the mario gameplay in a new game, sorta like 1-3, 3-World/Yoshi's Island, World/Yoshi's Island - 64. This feels literally like Super Mario Bros. 1 with pretty graphics, what new moves? The Wall Jump and the Triple Jump? Dude, like I said this is a fun game, just don't expect it to be the best Mario you've played...more or less the been there done that but with better graphics.

I'm 25, I love the game. It's funny -- I beat Super Mario World on my DS the day NSMB came out. I'd never beaten it before, but I'd played the hell out of it to finish it in time for NSMB. And while SMW is the deeper game, NSMB doesn't suffer in comparison. Whoever said that it's like a modern take on the original SMB nailed it; it really is a NEW Super Mario Bros. -- it's reintroducing the series to the world. My guess is, the sequels will get deeper, but this is excellent for what it is.

Is it the next SMW or SMB3? No. Is it an awesome game worthy of the Mario name? Yes.

If I have minor gripes, they would be the following:
- Music, not so great. Not up to Mario standards, anyway.
- Powerups are pretty useless and uninspired. I long for some kind of cape/tail apparatus, but oh well.

Other than that I reccommend it to everyone who hasn't been turned off to FUN over the years.

Are you actually going to listen to all the haters on GAF? :lol
This is the home of the most jaded gamers on the planet. The game is magical from what little I played. There is nothing wrong with it.

I think most people in this thread should probably wait for New Super Mario World to come out after YI2.
