The Official "New Super Mario Bros." (DS) Thread!

let me get this straight... you want Mario milked even more?

I mean I'm all for revisiting nostalgia and shit once in a blue moon, but that shit would get old quick.

i'm not saying that they should just retread old shit--like in nsmb, where you have new worlds that are inspired by the old mushroom kingdom, why not explore the same kinda thing with the other places within the mario canon?

it's barely milking, unless you count nsmb as milking

I agree here. Like you commented on world 2-6 they have tons of good ideas in this game, and it's almost like they were afraid to take them all the way. Like the hanging wall jump platform that you only need to ride to get a bonus coin. Or the destructable environment stuff that rarely gets used asid from Big Mario and the eel. THe game is full of fresh ideas that rival those found in Yoshi's Island, the difference is that Yoshi's Island would take those ideas all the way (in the bonus levels if they couldn't justify doing it in the main game because of difficulty level). I have yet to play world 7, so I guess I still have some cool stuff to see

EXACTLY! That's exactly the feeling I got, and I noted it more than once in my own review:

http://www.modojo.com/reviews/ds/new_super_mario_bros/20060517/310/

excerpt:

What strikes me most about NSMB is how packed the levels are with gimmickry and obstacles (in a good way). I can pick five NSMB levels at random and find enough ideas and elements to power an entire game. Ideas, even really sweet ones, are rarely repeated. There are also several enemy types that only appear once or twice in the entire title. In a way it almost seems like too much of a good thing. Why introduce a new enemy with interesting, new mechanics, in the second to last level? It's almost as though the team had a mandate to introduce one fresh idea in every single one of the game's 80+ levels.

With that being said, far too many of the NSMB levels are simply too short. Even in the final world, it feels as though you're hitting the midway restart point in seconds, and then crossing the finish line when the level was just hitting its stride. Many levels could use another leg to expand on the elements it just introduced.

Now that I've beaten it. How useful is the Nintendo Power Official Players Guide? Does it show everything? Or do they hide stuff from you? I wanna 100% this puppy.

I sort of had a problem with this. I went WHAT THE FUCK

try this in NSMB:

when you have the shell. Go under those big spikey things... press down. go into shell. When the spike comes down, you'll be fine.

HOWEVER, try sliding into the spike... in shell mode. And you'll lose your powerup.

:S

WTF

sweet game. Trying to get 100%. So thankful for save anywhere after you first beat the game because the requirement to have special mushrooms/status can be annoying if you lose/die. Been a lot of loading for me trying to get the triciker ones.

Why? I cleared it last night and nothing stood out to me.

Drill Dozer is far above this games level.

More like a beta of SMB3 where they got everything wrong.

Thank you! That's exactly what I've been wanting to say all along! :)

Updated? SMB3 SNES looks better than this game.

The enemies aren't a threat because there's a mushroom/fireflower block every ten steps.

The fishies are cuter but they made the spiny's all ick and ugly. ;_; They used to be cute back in SMB/SMB3!

good god. back off haters.

That's exactly it, yes. Unlike NSMB, Yoshi's Island stretched everything to the fullest.

And for that matter, so did Drill Dozer.

Great review! We are thinking very much alike Indeed :D I especially like this line:

I remember running through a level (literally running through, I think it lasted like a minute) that threw every style Hammer Brother from Mario 3 at me in a row. This was near the end of the game, and all I could think was, WTF?? Where were these guys earlier? They were so easily avoidable, I forced myself to stop and kill them... :( I couldn't belive they'd model and program those guys for such a bit part in the game! I still haven't played world 7, so forgive me if it was swimming in Hammer Bros, but they were not the only enemy/obstacle used like this.

And the one idea per each level is spot on. So many things about this game made me double take. I did not expect so many surprises or interesting new mechanics from a genre that was labeled stale in 1996. I was very impressed with some of the stuff they set up, but it never lasted more than one instance, and so much of it was so easy to dash past. Like the Goomba shoe in SMB3; one level, one shot, blink and it's gone. But for SMB3 the Goomba Shoe was unique in that sense, and that helped it stand out. With NSMB you have so many of these fleeting moments of genious that they pile up and end up forgotten. I'm finding that this at least keeps the game fresh on replay, as I've started it again
as Luigi
and can't remember playing most of these levels yesterday. But still, some of these mechanics beg to be expanded

This is a good one, too

This isn't the greatest Mario I've played, and perhaps isn't even in the top 3 (SMB3, SMW, SMB2), but it's still very fun. The telling thing is that I've had to quit and recharge my DS three times now while playing it. I just can't stop--must get those last few coins!

I don't mind that it's a throwback, I don't mind that it's possible to reach the end quickly by warping, I don't mind that they introduce an idea and don't use it again... all of that stuff gives this game its own unique take. Besides, I personally didn't come to appreciate many of the levels until I had gone through them a few times (hunting for those coins and secret exits!). It's a whole different ballgame once you try to get all those coins...

Would I have preferred Super Mario Bros 5 (6, whatever you want to number it)? Certainly.

But I'm pretty happy with [New] Super Mario Bros.

oh sweet lord, first time videogamesplus.ca pulls out a slow delivery and it's for this game. ACK.

I was amazed they actually kept the Whomps in the game, I was afraid they cut them out like the Manta Ray enemies. The thing is that they're only in one castle level.

I swear, this game is a blessing, coming out around my 20th birthday, its also the 20th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. in the US. My first game and now its 'All Growed Up'

Surely it isnt the best it could've been, but this game is so good and so fun it really doesnt matter, a masterpiece on the DS.

oh wow... halfway-castle in the fifth world were
you're on a rising platform while spiked balls roll around you
. how frickin' awesome was that?! or in the fifth world's haunted house where
the rising platform shakes as if posessed
. :D

slight disagreement here: out of the main-line 2d marios, I'd rank them as such:

SMB3, SMW, NSMB, SMB2jp, SMB1, SMB2us

Ok just picked up the game yesterday finally. I've had a chance to play to world 4 plus many of the mini games I missed out on from Mario 64.

I can't even begin to tell you guys how much I love this game. It is SO old school Mario...So much fun. So much charm. Designed to perfection the way only Nintendo knows how. I recommend this to anyone who considers themselves a gamer. Nintendo kicks so much ass for making this game. Thank you Nintendo! THANK YOU!

I don't care if I just sounded fanboyish or not. I'm 29 years old and this game just brought me right back to my youth. The level design is fucking spectacular, the gameplay is pure bliss to me. This is my favorite handheld game ever so far.

I can't believe some of you guys are talking shit about this game. WTF?!

P.S.- Can mods please sticky this thread. Please?! :)

On World 5 now. This game is just getting better and better.

I also saw a commercial for it last night. Really simple, just showed the game with the Mario soundtrack playing. They had the DS Lite at the end though. The Lite was probably going to launch with it I'm guessing but had to be delayed due to supply issues.

World 5 ghost castle.

Fuck it gets hard, there's only about two powerup blocks in the whole damn place, and I always end up judging the boos wrong and I get clobbered. :(

AND THE ELEVATOR TRAP WASN'T NICE ASSHOLE NINTENDO.

Fucking love this game.

(Did Biohazard admit he only played a little bit of a castle level? What the fuck.)

Actually I played a lot more than that, but I let my little brother do the castles and what no since we're doing the game together (he's 7).

I'm caving and picking this up this afternoon after Future Shop rewarded my laziness in picking it up with a Free $10 Gift Card. Huzzah.

yesterday:

I have it right here, I let my brohter play most of it, I just help him beat the castles and I guess I've seen Baby Bowser too much for my liking :p.

Today:

Actually I played a lot more than that, but I let my little brother do the castles and what no since we're doing the game together (he's 7).

total 180? yes i do believe so. Owned.

How the hell am I owned the game is still basic as hell and rather bland...seriously if you can't admit this game isn't as good as the preview endevors there is something wrong.

we fucking get it already. you are gonna keep up with the same shit?

some of the coins (trying to get 100%) are damn hard to get. I've gotten all for

LVL 1,3,4,5,7,8

LVL 2 and 6 (still clearing the stages)

and there are just some, that no matter how I search, I can't find. close to looking up a faq but its a bit soft cock.

will post back in a bit but I'm playing this now and its superfun.

Anyone saying its easy is obviously not trying to clear 100%. Some of the levels are maddening. World 8-6 (?) with the crazy spiders and the need to use mini mario took me about 20+ tries.

way to defend your total 180 there! We know you dont like it as much as the "preview endevors", we get that... but your two statements totally contradict each other. So which one was the lie?

your brother played most of the game and you hate it, or you played most of the game and you hate it? Inquiring minds want to know!

How any of you can hate on this game is beyond me. I <3 New Super Mario Bro's.

:lol when will this owning end? =P

I am totally loving this game, my only complaints really are the new power ups are pretty lame (I hate the turtle shell), and the bosses are such weaklings. But the level designs, some of them are excellent. The 5 ghost house, 2-6, and most of world 7 are great... doing the Wall Jump, trying to go for those extra coins. I'm near the end of the game (fortress in world 8), then I'm gonna go through the game and try and collect the coins/find the routes I missed. Best game yet on the DS though, and I echo the comments to bring out a New Super Mario Bros 2!

I just finished World 6. 6-6 was one of the most enjoyable levels so far. I loved the vertical aspect of it; it was a nice change of pace from constant side-scrolling. Also happy that the boss of the World 6 fortress was actually enjoyable and semi-challenging. Unfortunately that was the first one like that. I'm definitely disappointed with the bosses in that regard.

QFT. Bosses are the worst part of this game. Everything else is grand though.

I loved how people bitched and bitched about Mario Sunshine not taking place in the Mushroom Kingdom (inspired levels) but now that we got New SMB it's kind of clear that truly new is better.

I don't think anyone is saying these are better than the previous endeavors. You're the one saying the game is sub-par, everyone else is saying it's a solid and fun game. Nice strawman argument.

The hate on Mario Sunshine's setting was because the Isle Defino characters had terrible designs, there were few stages, almost no change in scenery or tropical theme, and several of them were pretty underwhelming, including ones that did mix it up (hotel, final lava stage). None of the good Mario platformers take place in just a "Mushroom Kingdom." All of them have you go through very different worlds. The exception here may be the original SMB.

Hate for this game O_o

GAF hits new heights. Or depths. I can't decide which.

I can't believe I had to go 4 pages in to find this thread! And now...thinking of all the crap I've read about it here....

Well, it doesn't matter. I couldn't wait to try it until I got my DSLite, so I nabbed it after work. So far it's probably the best game I've played this year. I guess it just does right what Nintendo tries so often to do...combine what made me love some of their games so much since I've been playing them, with new surprises that made me smile in spite of myself.

I just love it. It does the series justice, imo, so far. And nothing that people had me worried about (including the graphics or music) really bug me at all. I really love the way it looks, actually. The worst thing I can say about it is that the mini-games are a low point after playing the main game.

This little cartridge really lit up my eyes, I was feeling very jaded gamer lately.

I also picked up the game today. I'm finding it hard to wait 22 days to play it on a DS Lite. Your post just makes the wait harder.

World 7 put a big fat smile on my face god that world rox, last game that had me as giddy as this game did, was the first time I played FE on the GBA.

How do I get to that cannon in World 1? Can I get to it?

Its very odd to get to it
you go to the tower, you must have the blue shell. Go into the door near the pipe cannon, the door with the gold coin in it and all the shifting blocks. If you look closely on the side of the screen there is a gap that never moves on the right side. walk into it for an invisible pipe, once in the other room charge the shell and break the blocks which open the secret exit

Earlier in this thread someone listed the power-ups in NSMB and someone quoted them and said they forgot the Tanooki Suit. I played through the whole game and didn't see it, I was expecting it in the Cloud World but it wasn't there.... was that just a joke? So... so cruel...

But FUCKING AWESOME GAME none the less! Holy SHIT is it good! Total perfect blend of Mario 1, 3, and World. I cannot wait for the next one. I'm playing through a second time to collect all the star coins. Some of the levels are just SO MUCH FUN!

Well I got done beating it just a minute ago. Don't really got much to say about other then I'll mess around spending my 198 star coins (not feeling compelled to go grab the few I missed) before deleting my save file. After which I'll be selling it to my mom for full price to give to my brother for Christmas. All in all I suppose it was an okay "rental."

I love this game so far. I'm also enjoying one puzzle game very much. It's the "Wanted" game and my high score is 550 :)

Just now completed the game 100% (got all coins, spent all coins, opened/visited all levels and warps). I must say, New Super Mario Bros. has been a total blast for the four days I've been playing it. I'm only mildly sad that there's nothing else to do, besides keep playing my favorite levels...

One tip for anyone trying to get all three stars next to your file on the file-select menu--make sure to visit and use those warp cannons at some point. They count toward the total. I was stuck at two stars for a time until I noticed the only map spots with red dots were the cannons. Visited and used them all and *voila* third star.

I like
how the game shows an image of each level/warp you visited during the end credits. I was, however, a bit disappointed that there wasn't an extended ending for completing the game 100% I was hoping for a bit more Bowser/Bowser Jr. at least. Oh well.

Don't know wtf the whiners were expecting. It's a f**king Mario game. No, it's not the majesty that was SMB3 or SMW, but I'd call it a solid third behind those two. The title totally makes sense to me now. I see why Nintendo was so adamant to stick to NEW Super Mario Bros. as the title. This game is such a wonderful re-envisioning of the original. I'd love to see them make a NEW Super Mario Bros. 2 or 3 or World, although I guess it'd really confuse people if they continued to tack "New" onto the titles.

Wouldn't surprise me if this became a pack-in game for the late-summer or holiday push of the DS Lite.

I think they ment that they forgot to put the Tanuki suit in the game. ): WHICH THEY DAMN WELL DID!

Anyways I'm pretty much done with this game until I decide to replay it, which won't probably be long. 100% on everything. Found almost everything myself except for a couple of the level exits which I was having an impossible time with. Overal a pretty damn good game. I'd say maybe an 8. (note I'm a harsh critic so an 8 on my scale is VERY good)

I'm ready for a direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3 now please. :)

The game is good or great, but not quite fantastic -- I like the game, but it leaves me feeling empty after I'm done. Arrrgh...

It's just as long as SMB3 is, but it seems less...something. I don't know exactly what it is, but the game is just lacking something. It's still better than 95% of all other games on the market, but as it is a Super Mario Bros. title, I keep feeling like it should be even better.

What's driving me nuts is that I have this annoying feeling Super Princess Peach has more replay value than NSMB... and I really don't want that to be the case.
