i see where your coming from with some of those but i dont agree with two.

number of levels? - you got to be kidding, theres like 80 levels... its not super mario world but that was called world for a reason, heh

level design - in my opinion it is fucking awesome

You're right about the number of levels. I guess I didn't even think before I threw that in with the other hate. :P Can't really say I cared for the level design, but that might change once I've played through the game a couple of times.

nope. The game really isn't consistant with level design, you'll have a really great level and then go to a ho-hum level.

btw omg I'm playing Yoshi's Island, THAT game is meaty as hell compared to this game.

Ugh, you've stated your opinion time after time, we get it, you don't like this game.

No need to tell someone he's wrong because he thinks the level design is frickin' awesome. Geez...

I'm just expressing my opinion as well you've also been heard that you quite like the game, there are two sides to every story mate.

Nope, I haven't even stated my opinion on the game. I'm just saying you don't have to call out on people who like the game everytime, yours has gone to point of overkill because you're basically repeating yourself every time.

Doesn't it get boring?

Nah it's summer time I'm in a different state...I have nothing to do. It's not like I'm trolling the game as I fucking own it.

Put me in the camp that doesn't understand where all the hate for this game is coming from. I pretty much obliterated this game (I have about 5 more coins to collect before I have them all), and it's an easy 9.0 for me. I don't get the majority of the complaints here in regards to graphics/music. I think they're both excellent, and I also thought the level design in the later worlds was right up there with previous 2D Mario games.

The level design in NSMB is superior to any other 2D Mario game. Each level introduces a new element, and unlike SMB3, has enough challenge and complexity (thanks to the game's superb physics) that the player gets to experience those gameplay elements to the full extent. I also really enjoy the Super Mario Sunshine waterpackless level vibe.

Ok I just got 100% in the game and have 3 stars next to my file. It's a shame worlds 4 and 7 are hidden away since they are undoubtedly the best worlds in the game, especially world 4. Those worlds certainly elevated my opinion of the game. I also got a chance to see the commercial for the game. Shows lots of gameplay which I like but I could see how someone could mistake NSMB as a remake for the original though there is certainly plenty of new stuff shown in the trailer.

ok.

i pulled my head out of my ass, reset the game and started from scratch without my own (unfounded) negative expectations etc of the game, and i fucking love it. i wish i hadn't posted those initial impressions (lucky it got lost in the flood of responses anyway ;P )

the levels ARE better in many palces than SMB3/SMW, as they have some interesting puzzle aspects, not overly hard but do make you plan ahead a bit. the control is perfect, and the drive to keep going is there (along with the drive to collect all 3 coins from each level). i'm only up to world 3 again but i'll be playing more.. MORE!

I think some of us just had expectations that were through the roof. What's there in NSMB is really amazing, had it been released just after YI or SMW, it'll have been loved by much more people. Overall, I just think some of us expected something to redefine 2D platforming, but that was never the point of NSMB.

Why are you still in this topic?

You didn't even play the fucking game, you split time with your brother.

You can troll a game that you own.

Playing all levels and finding all secret exits.

I haven't found all secret exits, and I haven't visited all levels (I haven't used some cannons or opened some Mushroom Houses). I don't know what I did to get the second Star.

I have 100% on worlds 1-4, working on world 5 right now. It's funny because some of the star coins seem like they're so hard to get, but then when you get them, it's like wtf, so easy.

My copy just arrived (Importing from the states to Australia).

I am not sure how much I want to play because I am getting a DS Lite in one week (better screen FTW)

My first impressions are great, definitely has that old school feel (I like what they have down with the star coins).

New music is great

I must say I am not a massive fan of the giant shoom.

I mean even using starman to get 1ups takes skill because you need to pick up the pace increasing the chance of a pitfall death.

The giant shoom on the other hand is just bash and crash.

Still props so far!

I think all the Mario games are still great.

There is no "definitive" Mario game.

When Super Mario World came out, I still preferred many aspects of Super Mario Bros. 3 above it, though I could also appreciate some of the new things Super Mario World brought to the table.

Likewise with Yoshi's Island, I enjoyed many of the new things it brought to the table, but IMO it never quite outclassed Mario 3/World.

New Super Mario Bros. is a little harder to gauge since it is purposely designed to be a throw back to the original Super Mario Bros. 1 on the NES/Famicom.

The bottom line though is this -- they're all fucking great games, and we're lucky to have them.

Now bring on New Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario Galaxy, Yoshi's Island 2, and Super Paper Mario :)

Well, from all the 2D Mario-platformgames this must be the worst one. And in worse, I mean its worth a 7 out of 10. Its just a compilation of the best stuff in earlier Mario-games, but with less secrets, amazingly easy gameplay (finished it under 8 hours) and no mentionable additions. This is not at all what I was expecting from a Mario-game.

You'd be able to beat Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World in about the same time I'd bet, if they were released brand new today.

I do personally like the additions of the wall jump, butt stomp, and all the bouncy platforms.

Super Mario Bros can be done in five minutes, Super Mario Bros 3 in a few hours (Doing all the levels)

Yoshi’s Island took a few hours, the longest 2D game is Super Mario World.

Have you played much Mario before?

Its all about replaying the games because there so fun and full of secrets (now I have only done the first world in NSMB but it looks like there are a few secrets)

You certainly won't finish SMB3 within 8 hours while finishing every level of it. The problem with NSMB is that you finish it within 8 hours, with every lousy secret (very few) unlocked and playing every level. There is just no replayability because of the lack of innovation and lack of good level design. Its all been done before, while earlier Mario-platformers would bring new cool stuff to toy around with. Its not a bad game, but its a bad Mario-platformer comparing it to the former ones.

And still, I couldn't play this game for longer than 8 hours too because its easy and boring as hell.

I don't understand, it's no harder than than any other fucking Mario game. All Mario games have been fairly easy, and the difference with tis game is that you get a fuckton of 1ups.

This is definitely NOT the WORST Mario game (Lost Levels holds this) and it's not the best either, but it's a fucking GREAT entry into the series.

Yeah I regularly do SMB3 in around 2-3 hours on my NES, you can’t save so it is designed to be finished in one or two sittings.

That’s every level done, no warp whistles.

Finally!

No, it's pretty bad. Sonic Rush is a better Mario Bros. game than NSMB is. :\
Just keep playing New Super Mario Bros. until you realize how awesome it is. You'll figure it out eventually.

just beat World 7 which was AWESOME and frustrating to get all the coins in but i did it :D
Saving world 8 for trip to Orlando tommorow.(its my birthday tommorow also :) )

After playing this and SMW, I can safely say that the new moves they included DEFINITELY make up for the lack of powerups.

Wallkick is the greatest addition to 2D Mario!

Agreed. More focus on powerups would have screwed up the finely-tuned level design anyways.

So, I'm a little surprised that people like the secrets from older Mario games more than NSMB's. They were often utterly random, with time spent in braindead exploration, not skill, being the determinant factor in locating them. Remember the warp whistles in SMB3? How the hell would you even figure out to crouch on a white block in a certain level for a few seconds by yourself?

how the sweet f**k is anyone still listening to biohazard after the self owange earlier in this thread?

oh and grats to john TV - im almost there too now!

The only move I wish was in the game was throwing shells straight up.

I only need 3 more Star Coins in the game (all in World 8). :)

Haha yeah I have had a couple of those moments too.

I just picked it up yesterday, so far the game is just amazing. Exactly what I expected out of it. Gonna work on getting 100% over the next few days.

I swear I have everything yet I still only have 2 stars. I even checked GameFAQs to make sure I had every secret exit and every coin. I'm thinking it might be because I didn't go into all those mushroom houses after I unlocked them, although none of them are glowing red due to me getting every coin.

The info most people are posting about how to get the three stars is inaccurate, FYI.

Did you
buy all of the wallpapers for the bottom screen in the special mushroom house in world 1
?

crouching on any white block for several seconds will cause you to drop behind the landscape...it's likely to happen to a player over the course of a game. you still probably wouldn't think to run behind the goal on a certain level, but it's not quite as arbitrary as you make it sound.
