The Official "New Super Mario Bros." (DS) Thread!

Just got the game today! So much negativity in this thread; glad I avoided reading it. :P So far, I think NSMB is an enjoyable title, but it's not quite in the same league as SMB1-3 and SMW, which remain my favorite Mario games.

Also please tell me that the classic theme is in the game; I couldn't believe it wasn't playing on 1-1!

It is in those power up rooms. That's it though. No playable level has it.

I know what you're thinking. Weak.

Wow I got some multiplayer in today and its awesome. I was having a lot of fun with it until the person I was playing with was complaining how much I was beating him and refused to play anymore. He's such a baby, he had just gotten finished kicking my ass in Marvel VS Capcom 2 over and over.

So now I must find someone else to play with, as I am already addicted to the super fun multiplayer mode after a very short time with it.

Anyone else pick up the J-version today?

They changed the color of the Nintendo logo at the title screen! OMG! Who knows what else is different!!!!11

BLUE. :O

Guess it was good I waited to GET THE SUPERIOR VERSION!!!!!!!!11111111111111111

Does the U.S. NSMB box also come in a yellow plastic casing?

The first few worlds are more like Super Mario Bros. 1 ... the latter half of the game is more like Super Mario Bros. 3/World without the flying powerups.

Nope, we are the lucky ones who also got THE SUPERIOR BOX!

Sucks that the cartridge isn't yellow tho...thought they were going to properly pay homage to the old games... <shrug>

Haha I love this game.

I just beat the last bowser battle by using a giant mushroom that I had saved in my inventory. I just stepped on baby bowser like an ant and pushed bowser out of the way, dropping the bridge.

Hell yeah.

That fight wound up being surprisingly intense for me, considering the ease of most of the other boss fights. I got there as Super Mario, and didn't have any items in reserve (I was blitzing through the last levels, and didn't bother to go back to get a mega mushroom)

I saw the switch and went 'hah', and tried to charge through, taking the hit from Bowser to kill him - except that didn't work at all. He has cheese protection (though apparently not mega mushroom protection), if you try to go through invincible, you get thrown back. So now I was normal mario, no backup powerup, standing between baby bowser and big bowser spitting fire at me. That turned out to be a sweaty palm situation, though I came out of it alive. Had to dodge fireballs from bowser, knock the shells onto baby bowser, and when baby went down, bowser got pissed and started spraying more fire. I had to time a charge at him just right to get under him and hit the switch. Quite the battle for something you usually finish in three seconds with the right powerup ;)

Just 100% Princess Peach today at lunch, 2 more coins to go in the final castle and I will have 3 stars in NSMB too. Time to get back to playing Legend of Heroes PSP I guess :P

So what's the next big DS release gonna be?

I think we all know better than to listen to your game recommendations. :D

BTW how the hell did you get the box next to your name red again? You just came back. :lol

I've got one coin left (the second one in the final castle), and 3.5 hours left on this shift. Once I wait for these gross guys to quit looking at hentai and fuck the fuck out of here, it is on. Then, going for max score.

Like you're not gonna buy Bubble Bobble Revolution. Hello.

I also made fun of PC gamers. Don't do that.

Picked the superior version up yesterday morning with my new mobile phone, and I`m loving it. Been busy watching Gundam 0083, playing FFXII and working, so I haven`t been able to play anywhere but on the train to and from work. I`ll probably knock through it tonight, before being dragged back into FFXII.

Bah, you don't appreciate old-school-sounding goodness. :p

I really enjoy chiptunes. :)
That's not a chiptune and there's nothing oldschool about it. It sounded quite awful to be honest.

I do enjoy real chiptunes however..

I had the volume really low, so I suppose it sounded more old-school than it really was. Still, it sounds good.

And I know that's not a chiptune. I was making a semi-related general comment; should've been more clear about that.

Yeah, that was a crappy chiptune wannabe. I love regular chiptunes. NES, Genesis and old-style GameBoy music rocks. Just something about the way it sounds.

Remixes are great, but there's just something about using real synthesized sounds. Remember that Katamari NES song that was going around?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I don't want to go through 11 pages to find out:

How do you access the "alternate path" worlds? I passed the game earlier today and figured that would unlock them, but no dice.

beat worlds 2 and 5 as mini mario, iirc. he'll take the little pathway after the boss fight. Or, you can warp there by getting to the warp cannons.

Ah thanks... and how do I get to the warp cannons?

So for those of you who've beaten it, roughly how long does this game take to a) beat normally and b) fully complete, ie get all the exits/stars/pathways/etc.? I'm trying to gauge how meaty this quest will be before I get it.

Never heard that! Anyone got a link?

I'm a big fan of chiptunes, and [although I know that ISN'T a chiptune] just thought it was pretty sweet to hear what it may just sound like if it were a classic GB version.

You never heard of the "LONELY ROLLING STAR" NES Katamari song?

Thank you good sir. You have given me my regular nostalgia trip for the evening.

I just love how the NES, SMS, GB and C64 sound. Genesis and SNES are up there too, of course.

I kind of wish games still sounded like this.

I'm still enjoying NSMB a lot. Just got to World 6. I have to go back and beat some levels differently to unlock some more though.

For some reason, the voices in this one don't annoy me. I think it has to do with that this is new and not altering my memories of older games perhaps.

If you just run from exit to exit, you could probably clear the final level in about 2-3 hours. Fully complete with all the exits took me a little while longer, because for alternate routes and shit, you need specific items for certain levels. Then I went back and got all the coins, and that probably took me the longest. I might have somewhere between 10-12 hours in so far, and I just got 100% this evening.

I'll let you know how long max score takes once I get there.

Dunno if anyone have noticed this already, but if you're fast enough to run to the flag pole while having the mega mushroom on a stage, the flag pole will snap as Mario runs through it.

Mario looks really surprised as it happens too. Pretty funny stuff.

how do i get the fireworks when i finish a level?

Finish the level with the same digit in the tens place and single digits place on the timer...

111,122,133,144,155,166,177,188,199...

having it end at an even 100 (or 200 or 300 or 400) will not give you any fireworks, though.

The number of fireworks equals the value of the aforementioned digit (if the timer ends in 11, there will be 1 firework. If it ends in 77, there will be 7 fireworks

^It doesn't work with it ending with x66.

I did it on purpose by using one of them right before the flag pole. :lol
