The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

Are the people who are saying the game is too easy playing co-op or something? I could see how that would be considered easy since you keep respawning, especially if you accumulated a ton of lives.

also the guy who said he did it in 4 hours.. no way were they getting star coins - if you are calling the game easy and not getting the star coins, you aren't really playing the most challenging aspect, in most cases

i've lost many lives trying to get all of them, and it is much harder to get some as single player, since you can't just commit suicide to get them and hope to come back with a bubble

I wish you could turn off the A button bubble thing. It's fun when nobody knows about it, people will be dieing left and right, which is 1/2 the fun, but when people start going in bubbles through impulse, it isn't as fun.

I understand the need for it... like, if you're playing with someone who's inexperienced, but yeah. Maybe if they made you hold the A button for 1 second, you would enter the bubble... That way, you can't push it when you're about to die, but you can still use it to skip sections.

Also, I find it funny that, even if everyone else is in a bubble, you can go in it as well. The music slows down, then you hear really sad music, and you're booted out of the level, no loss of lives (but loss of power-ups). It's prety funny.

im going to shit in the box when i send my wii in. this is my 4th replacement system. FUCK YOU NINTENDO!
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that, if Nintendo finds your Wii to be modded in any way, they'll make you pay... so you might want to consider removing all traces of homebrew or whatever you may have. When you get your new Wii, you can always Bannerbomb it.

I'm part way through World 4 and have been collecting every star coin. I am having a blast and feel 20 years younger this week.

I do have issue as a gamer with a physical disability with regards to the Wii Remote control scheme. I'd really really love to see Nintendo support the Classic Controller more. There's nothing in this game that couldn't be mapped to an analog stick or shoulder button.

Holding the Wii Remote for longer play sessions is difficult for someone like myself with Arthritis and limited dexterity due to Cerebral Palsy and the d-pad and controller itself are simply too small to be comfortable. I find that my thumb will slip off of the tiny d-pad onto the A button, which is a real pain in the ass if I'm trying to play multi w/ the wife.

The Nunchuck scheme is ok, but doesn't provide a d-pad controlled solution.

I’ve only played a couple hours maybe at the most and I am really liking it so far. I am up to 1-3 (with all Star Coins).

The only issue I having at the moment is
trying to ‘save’ the Toads. I came really close with 1-1, but died at the end. Is saving the Toads a requirement, so they will respawn at each area if you are not able to save them? Or is it a one time thing and if they die in that specific map location, they die?

Yes, on so many levels I had to go "Fuck it, I lost 5 lives on this coin, I am just finishing the level"

am I a bad Mario player? I've always flown through early Mario games, but I died a few times during World 3.

I set off the you're-a-moron guide in 3-4. I thought I was decent, but apparently not.

My wife and I really had a blast last night with this game. I felt like I was in my teens playing the ol' NES. It was so funny watching my wife die at almost every turn and basically she just started staying in the bubble. :lol

Is it confirmed that even seeing that little green box float in costs you a save-file star?

Beat it last night. Other than a few odd ball levels (fuck you, level 8-4), I didn't have much trouble at all. Awesome game though. And holy shit, almost everything about world 8 (except level 4 goddammit!) was fucking awesome.

Airship
levels throughout the game were probably my fucking favorite stages. They were so fucking perfect, and they always culminate in an original and completely satisfying boss battle.

Yoshi is way too underutilized though. Right now that might be my biggest complaint. He may be in something like 5 levels? Pretty ridiculous. He should at least have 2 levels per world, because he's a blast to use.

Oh, and also, final boss fight is fucking EPIC. You guys will all love it :D

And the credits are great too!

Even though I beat it in one day, getting all the star coins will take a while. Plus, I beat NSMB DS about 4 times, and this game is leaps and bounds better than that. So I know I'll be coming back to this one again many times

Fuck what a great ride

I don't know, I am going to try finishing the game without making it pop up. On world 5 now and still haven't seen the thing.

i'm surprised to see folks run through it w/o dying much. i'm pretty good @ the game, and mario in general, but going for those star coins will be the end of me. i even saw the green block of embarrassment once. (i refused to start the level w/ a power-up)
I have to of lost nearly 100 lives already, but I will have no way of being sure unless it gives a total at the end :lol

What's up with the special thing regarding the super guide?

Can I get this when I not use Super Guide once?
Can I not get this when the green box appears once?

I'm not going to use it but I think for getting all the coins I have to restart a few times so the box appears :)

Does every restart of a level count? Even when I play another one in between? Let's say I play World 1-1 and after 3 tries I go on to World 1-2 to avoid the green box. After this I go back to World 1-1 :)

edit: oh, zigg did quenstion this already :D Want to know as well

I'm not sure if anyone knows this yet, but what is the incentive to
get all of the star coins in world 9? Do you unlock anything cool or is it just a personal satisfaction thing?

Really hope its the former :P

That's the most overstated complaint in a video game since Bozon whinged that Fire Emblem didn't have Mii support.

I mean, it's pretty much a complete non-issue. I've put 15 hours into the game and I've barely noticed it. How it become some game breaking flaw, I'll never know.

Well with me, I thought it would be a problem but I ended up being fine with it. It isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I also think it works out since four power ups come out at once instead of a constant pausing throughout the level while everyone levels up. But, the two people I'm playing with who I guess you could say are casual gamers do. They usually have trouble keeping momentum after the fact it seems like.

Other than that though, they do want to keep playing so it isn't game breaking or anything. I don't think anyone experienced in Mario games would have a problem with it though.

Did you unlock the
only secret level in World 8
? It is probably the greatest level in the entire game, I think.

I think I'll go play it again right now, actually.

Man I'm old. What do the 3 gold coins in each level do? I remember I collected all of them in the DS one for some reason...

Collecting every gold coin on every level unlocks
World 9
.

How does the single player compare to previous 2D Marios? I'm tempted to trade in MW2 for this on Friday (I enjoyed that, but I'm strictly single-player only when it comes to FPS' which aren't called Left4Dead, as I'm appalling at them)

The level design in this game is very good, I must say. It's so much better than NSMB on the DS. It definitely feels like a SMB to SMB3 kind of jump. The controls definitely could use some work, though. I jumped back into Super Mario World just after a couple hours of NSMB Wii and the difference in responsiveness is truly night and day.

Yep, its lacking nostalgia. seriously though, there is nothing lacking in the art department in world 1 or 2.
No, I don't think that's it. It has an inconsistent look to it, basically. The geometric designs of Mario World, for instance, were just fantastic throughout and I feel a more simplistic and unified style would have been a good fit here. It still looks good enough as is, however, just wish they had abandoned the DS style and audio design for this new game.

It was really funny when I was playing with two other people and, during World 1, we were all talking about having a bunch of lives, but then by World 3 we noticed that everyone was approaching the zero-lives mark. It's like, being reckless is fine in World 1, but you'll end up dying far more than you realize once the level design becomes even a bit tricky.

Shit, I haven't unlocked
ANY secret levels. Do you do this just by finding alternative exits in certain stages?

Hmmm...well I'm gonna have to now, thanks dude. One more thing, anything special on World 9?

No idea. I haven't got that far. I know it exists, but I didnt want to spoil it.

Has anyone else's hat disappeared? We noticed it around the midpoint of World 3, but my Mario doesn't have his hat anymore. When I die he respawns with it on, but after I beat a stage it's gone again. WTF?

I'm at the midpoint of World 5 and have gotten all the star coins so far, but I had to look up a few on the net for World 2-4 and 3-Ghosthouse. I can't believe I triggered the Super Guide in World 2. Damn you, Star Coins! D:

I think having 99 lives does it.

If you beat a stage with 99 lives, you go hatless until you lose. It's neat.

Correct.

It isn't really a spoiler, but I'll spoil it anyway:
Look at the video list. Just looking at, for a random example, "1-2 Hidden Exit" without buying the video will give you a hint to look out for a hidden exit there.

I don't exactly not why but I finished the first world of this game with all the coins and I had more fun than my entire NSMB DS game...

nice post by jeremy parish with a theory as to why they chose this style

Anyway, going with a hand-drawn style would have been a deathblow for the game. Americans hate hand-drawn art to death. It's probably no coincidence that Disney is releasing its first traditionally animated feature in something like six years (The Princess and the Frog) while hedging its bets with a horrible-looking CG vehicle for Jim Carrey to desecrate all you hold dear about Charles Dickens. Care to guess which will claim the bigger box office take?

But beyond the sheer economics of the thing, Nintendo's smart to go with the 2.5D style regardless, because it's easier for the casual gaming audience to deal with. A while back, Tomm Hulett (hi Tomm!) posted a comment on the site that suggested 3D games are more visually intuitive for casual gamers -- which is true, to a degree. The visual depth and dimension perspective offered by polygons more closely mimic how we actually see the world and require less interpretation than a two-dimensional abstraction.

Funny thing, Mario may seem a little more loose in NSMBWii but he has more more control over his space than any 2d Mario (without powers) sans NSMB.
Butt stomp - to cancel any forward momentum in the air
Butt stop cancels - to cancel butt stomp's downward speed
Spin jump - to fudge forward momentum

With those things alone you can pretty much be where you want to be at all times. A looser with those things creates a different moving/jumping feel. Different but approximately equal to other Marios in the feeling of being in control.

So far so fucking good. I like it more than Super Mario World already, and it got all the awesome shit from Super Mario Bros. 3 (you save your power-ups for later, Koopa kids, etc.)

I'm not sure if this was on the DS game; but I just LOVE it when the enemies dance with the tune. Fire up 1-1 and notice how the fist Goomba reacts to the tune. Koopas are even more awesome! :lol

Oh I love this game. Super Mario Bros. 5.... about time!

So what does
saving the Toads do for you? I have finished 1-3 and now I have the option to save them, but haven’t done so yet. Also, do you have unending chances to save them if they die on you?

I died 3 times and then it disappeared. Couldn't have more tries. I succeeded at bringing one at first and it only gave me lives. I see this feature as useless until someone can tell me what it brings outside a couple of lives. I mean, I will do all of them even just for a stats somewhere but I see none.

I forgot to write thisin my previous post, but I loooove the credits.

A 1/2 hour ago, I beat the final boss again for a quick dose of lots of fun, and I noticed that, in the credits, everyone bobs their head to the music and dances to it. That's really amazing to me for some reason. :lol

this sounds silly but you know what gave me the biggest smile in NSMBWii so far? Seeing the
card flip matching game
make a return.

only played about half an hour so far, but I am having such a blast.

If you save one, depending on the number of seconds left they will open up one of the various toad huts at the starting marker for that world.

Are you sure you need all the gold coins for it? I thought maybe the keys you got at the end of each castle would unlock a giant door at the end of world 8.

Oh snap, it's true, I forgot that too.
But once they did they once, will others appear?
