The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

One thing I was wondering about:

I heard there was supposed to be some sort of reward for never activating the Super Guide. We played the entire game through in co-op, and this feature was never activated, but I don't think we got anything special for it.

Of course, I'm not sure if Super Guide actually can be activated in co-op. We died a comically high number of times on some stages.

Anybody know what's up with this?

EDIT: Checking some other sources. Seems that clearing all the stages without it nets you another star on the save file info? I guess we did get this reward then, as we have all 5 stars.

when you download the new loader, make sure you restart before trying. i didn't have to do anything special.
 
Played this game with my girlfriend earlier tonight. So much fun. She doesn't even really play that many Mario games but she had a good time. We kept dying on 2-2 and just laughing about it.

This game is definitely in the running for my GOTY so far. Just incredible.

I can't answer that. I've only played an hour, during which I used the two warps I had to use to get to world 8 and finished the game. If you're just looking for the quick wham bam minimum stages runthrough, it's definitely more replayable than NSMB DS or YI or any of the 3d games... probably not as punchy for that runthrough type as SMB1 or SMB3.

Heh, I've had my fair share of deaths as well. It hasn't been really difficult, but I'm still coming to grips with some of the differences in control. I'm so used to the spot on controls of SMB3 and Mario World that the slippery platforming of this game is tripping me up and I often end up over correcting.

Uh oh! Do I smell another GAF Mario-level contest in the near future? Because I'd love to see what people can do with them. I loved the Super Mario World custom games.

Why oh why wasn't I hyped about this game at all? I'm totally running out to Frys at lunch. God I hope they have it in stock. Now it's time to find some people who want to play Super Mario 5.

I totally agree, I found all the exits to the cannons before finishing the worlds that contained them, but never used them - why would you want to skip content? even if you were going to come back later, i'd just feel like i've already played the best levels and wouldn't get a gradual progression of 'wow' as I made my way through the worlds

so you've played the game in an hour, skipped over a majority of the levels, and somehow your opnion about the final game matters how?

You can beat the original SMB in less then 30 mins if you warp. Not really a surprise here.

I liked how the "warps" were handled in Super Mario World the best. You had to use Star Road in order to open the shortcuts.

Seriously though, besides being a mario staple, do we really need them anymore? The main purpose of warps was to beat the orignal game quickly, something you did because you couldn't save the game or for bragging rights.

Anyone else miss warps actually being in the stages themselves. How cool would it be to find an alternate exit, and when you leave the stage all the sudden your in World 5? A total surprise, instead of knowing..ok I unlocked a cannon, I can warp now if I want to.

I don't know its the little things like this, that made the original mario games magic. Even the flute took away some of that experience (although the secret locations of the flutes made them fun to collect)

Hrmm, I'm quite the opposite in that I like finding all the exits, but I don't want the game to give me no choice of what I want to do next -- that is one thing that I actually didn't like about finding secrets in the old games, especially when I was far into them, it would skip me over a bunch of levels that I worked hard to get to

I think that the gradual change from the SMB model of "play from 1-1 in one sitting" to the copious save points that apparently still bother people who don't think they should have to tackle a given level more than once sort of runs counter to this idea, though.

The progression model in SMB has changed permanently, for better or worse.

I guess, but with the current set up, you could easily go back to Level 1 or 2 if you wanted. It would just be fun to walk out of one level and be in a whole new world. It wouldn't really effect the gameplay, it would just be more of a surprise then say unlocking a cannon.

IGN's guide says you can't even see the Super Guide block to get the star, and I'm pretty sure a (possibly mistranslated) comment by Miyamoto indicated the same thing.

But Clipper told me last night that he did spot it once in his single-player playthrough (though he didn't hit it) and still got the star. He also didn't restart without saving, so that nixes that.

I'm curious if anyone's said in this thread or can share their own experiences with whether they saw the block and whether it affected them in the end. Because I'm pretty sure I'm not good enough to go through the game without seeing it at least once.

If you see it and can't get the star, that would suck. Are save games using Miis as profile slots?

Nope, which is a shame, because I fear a little bit more for my own save file with the kids in my house... :D

We had a brief sit-down where I laid out the consequences for making Daddy's quicksave balloon go away last night :lol

yeah, guys. It's just an extra star on your profile. Does it really matter THAT much?

If it unlocked something cool, I guess I could see why you would be upset.

MUST HAVE ALL ACHIEVEMENTS

(I wouldn't sweat it so much if I did get to the end and didn't get it. But I would be slightly bummed. I've always sought out those stars in SMA/NSMB.)

Three. And yeah you can do that. I didn't note whether you could copy them or not, though. I would assume so, barring quicksave data.

From what I saw in videos, the only unlockables seem to be videos that give you hints about secrets.

I wonder what I should tell my 3 sons (age 10 to 3) to avoid the same situation ? What is the stick you mentioned to them ? No playing game forever until they are 18 ?
 
I had a slight issue with the controls at first, D-pad is just too tiny for my liking, I tried playing with the wii wheel, slightly better, then I put the wii condom on for the first time, the added thickness helps a bit. Has anyone had any experience with the BOSS controller shell?

I love the extra level after the castle in world 4. I was hoping they would put some of these types of levels in.

Overall this game makes me happy.

For me, it's a game in and of itself.

While I have 90 lives for every level overall, I feel like I can only really afford to burn seven before it's an unofficial game over.

define unlockable. :lol there are a few courses that are pretty well hidden that i didn't find until after completing the game. not to mention that you'll want to make sure you get every star coin
in order to gain access to the levels of world 9.
 
Game looks and plays great.

Except... screw Nintendo for all this Wii-mote fucking mess. Having the Motion+ on the wii-mote makes it too fucking long to comfortably use the controller sideways for games like this, so that means that each time I wanna play Mario I have to remove the jacket, remove Motion+, and play. Then, when my wife and I want to fire up Wii Sports Resort, I have to reverse the process.

Also, the dpad is too fucking small. Sooo wish they would have left out the silly motion controls and let us use the classic controller...

I don't have New Mario yet but I noticed this problem when playing Punch-Out. So I just removed the stupid jackets from the motion+ and now it's really easy to just take the motion+ off.
 
Okay, so admittedly I haven't played more than World 1, but I do kind of wish I could use the Classic Controller, motion controls be damned. I can't stand the Wii Remote's tiny D-Pad. Oh well. Still a fun game.

is it not the same dpad from the classic controller? Never noticed a difference.

A small compliant, but I wish there was something to list if you went though all the exits in a level like in Super Mario World.

Three save slots; you can Delete/Copy files, per most recent Mario titles.

Nice contribution to the thread. How about delving into that a bit more? Are they too floaty, does waggle scare you, does the D-Pad hurt your thumb, did Yoshi look at you the wrong way?

If you're taking the time to post, especially a negative comment in a thread of mostly positive impressions, it would be great to hear why you feel the controls are subpar.
 
its not that bad.

It's a bit crappy for diagonal movement but far from game breaking.

And its way better than using the nunchuk.


Don't blame the controls, the issue (not really an issue) is the physics in the game are a bit slippery (previously i said SMB3ish, I am going to say its more a mix of SMB1 and SMB3, obviously leaning more towards SMB3)
 
the wiimote dpad is great imo. it's small enough to be able to react really quickly, but big enough to be useable (not like the gamecube dpad)

but maybe I'm just used to it because I play a lot of NES/TG16 VC games, and I use the wiimote-only option for Brawl.
 
Wiimote D-Pad cuts up my thumb a bit, after a couple hours of play, but otherwise, I find it decent in size and responsiveness.
