Lame OP, I know, but I'll try to work on it more as time goes on. For now I'd rather keep it short and concise.

About: Penny Arcade makes web comics mostly about video games and other dorky activities. The catch here is they were the ones that made video game web comics popular in the first place. Comics are posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, accompanied by a blog post by Tycho. I'll update the OP with the current comic and blog post whenever I can get around to it on those days, but don't expect me to be speedy about it. I'll also try to make it a habit of bumping the thread as I update the OP, to help bring attention to new posts and such. And again, consider the OP a work in progress for now.

New comic for Wednesday, December 18, 2009: An Actual, Real Film

I'm on record as saying that game length isn't an especially good indicator of, well, anything really, except perhaps game length, of which it may be considered a key indicator. I do find it interesting however that - at completion - I've played Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes four times longer than I played Uncharted 2, even including the multiplayer. Considering the thirty dollar ante, this is a ri-goddam-diculous amount of entertainment for the money - in raw dollars, it is quite likely the master of the season.

With the defeated campaign hanging from my belt like a grisly trophy, it's easy to say that the fractal, repeating nature of the campaign is an area of concern for some. You essentially start from scratch multiple times over the course of it, each time with a new character, a process which is designed otensibly to instruct you. I happen to like that arc, but yes - after developing a sundering, slashing army of instakill ravening spirits, getting "busted down to private" can sear. At least, until you discover the cool tricks of your new army, at which point the gravy spigot bursts into your waiting mouth. Maybe you don't like that image. Maybe you don't want to like it. But you get it.

Clash of Heroes has created turbulence in Gabriel's marriage, however, testing its tensile strength. Gabriel revealed to me that, after an especially demoralizing loss, Kara suggested that maybe he should choose her army. I've played against him, and he beats me every time, so it's not about him. It's about her - that is to say she, who can gaze into that mottled skein and see the victory within it.

Some kind of mystical time coordinate must have come and gone, because there is a taut firehose of Splinter Cell: Conviction data whipping around all of a sudden. You've got your teaser thingy, more or less, not much to see there aside from the knowledge that they understand Chaos Theory is the best Splinter Cell yet made. This is followed by an interview with Patrick Redding, a video which is bedangled with plump fruit. The filet offering, the tender puck of pure beef, must certainly be the walkthrough video: available at Joystiq, and maybe someplace else, it's the most authentically useful information they have seen fit to offer.

In my opinion, which is correct, cooperative gameplay hasn't yet moved past the offerings in Chaos Theory. Even its competitive mode was cooperative, for fuck's sake. SC:CT was festooned with huge ideas, broad sweeps, amazing experiments that were only made possible by their association with a durable brand. Outside of the tearing and performance issues, which were a concern even in their earlier co-op foray, that last clip is one of the most striking things in recent memory. It reveals a game I want very much to play.

You are not Firestorm.

Who is this usurper.

Glad to see this up. The main post is a little long winded though. You might want to try limiting yourself to crisp sentences of four words or less. You know, for clarity.

Great job on the censored comic, by the way. :lol

It's nice, but I feel this thread may get to crowded and then we're all gonna be digging around looking for the exact comic/update we're talking about. Blah, what I'm trying to say is official threads usually get bloated. I was liking the occasional PA post for different days or whatever. Well, regardless let's see how this goes.

Danthrax and Jocchan had a hearty laugh the other day as I relayed to them my play by play of the demo. Let's just say none of us are getting the game. :P

Penny Arcade is my favourite interactive internet entertainment comedical medium of comical internet comics. I once paid human currency for one of their JPEGs on the Xbox.

The documentary they're doing is also radtastic.

Finally a thread dedicatd to a worthy comic!
Read the comic before reading the rest of the OP, and was a bit WTF at the kittens xD.

When the 360 was still new and shiny and such, I recall buying two of the picture packs they put up, so that everyone that looked at my gamer card saw Twisp & Catsby. Likely not the best way to spend my space bucks, but I hold no regret in my heart over the matter.

I didn't want to push my luck so much right after I made the thread. :lol

Lets start this thread off right.

Gabe's updates are generally entertaining but Tycho is pretentious at best. I'd wager that less than 5% of his audience can truly grasp his message without dictionary.com open in another tab.

I like his style and english is not even my first language. after all "his audience" can't even spell "should have" so why bother dumbing down? I say go for it and with great gusto, too.

Just because you might not understand a reference doesn't mean we're all mouthbreathing troglodytes. I like his posts just fine.

A catch-all PA thread is a nice idea, although I'd say only gaming-related comics should be posted.

And yeah, Dante's Inferno is as terrible as I predicted feared.

That would be really sad, since I understand his posts just fine and English is not my native language. Either they have a larger international audience than I thought (95%!) or most Americans are dumb as bricks if they can't even understand texts written in English.

Both readings sit well with me, so whatever. :p

I'd say at worst he can be a little over the top with his scathing criticism. At best, he's fucking genius.

The man's got his own style, sure it's ridiculous but that's what makes it so entertaining. Don't be a hater!

I seriously thought the kittens in the first panel were part of the actual comic.

"Mmm...titty-groping devils...kittens...that makes sense."

BTW Wrekt is being sarcastic.

I approve of this thread. I've been following PA since...I'd say 2003-ish. I was a loyal member of their forums until the redesign. The comic is still great, though.

Hats off to you if you can read the following quote with a full understand of the message he is trying to get across.

Having a nightly destination again gives us an opportunity to be deeply annoyed as a group, to experience the staph infected underbelly of a community aburst with pustules, and to offer unsolicited feature suggestions for the Xbox Live team. As the Fall Update hits tomorrow, we saw it as an opportunity to cross-leverage external synergants(?).

I'll be extremely impressed considering that the word synergants isn't a real word and you just created a definition for it in your head. He switches between showing his annoyances with the Live community to stringing together something that sounds like corporate buzz-words. One of which doesn't actually mean anything.

If expecting real words and common English from someone that makes a living off of commentary makes me a mouth-breathing troglodyte, so be it.

Edit: I enjoy a majority of their comics. I'm not a Tycho hater, I just think he tries a little too hard when it comes to his updates.

No one can drop science like Tycho. Cormac McCarthy ain't got nothing on his literary chops. Yeah, I went there.

Nice thread.

Sadly, I think VGCats is going to need one. :lol Since every comic gets its own thread. Granted, VGCats updates like once a month but it's ridiculous that the comic gets a thread every single time it updates and all of them are just to bash the damn thing.

In other news, did any of you guys grab the Dante's Inferno demo? It's like they took the Divine Comedy and turned it into a seventh grader's wet dream. Tycho and I were laughing during most of the cut scenes. When Dante is sewing the cross into his skin we couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be funny, or if if they were actually serious about this crap.

Somehow they managed to copy everything about God of War except the fun.

That's my back of the box quote.
:lol

Got the OP updated again, and there's a new episode of PATV out.

VGCats just needs to be banned on GAF. Either that, or bashing it in a thread needs to stop. I hate the comic just as much as anyone else, but the constant need to dig up its corpse to prod at it now borders on parody. If the threads were there and only people that enjoyed the comic posted in them, they'd get about five replies each time before dying.

Yeah good idea OP, I love PA and individual comics usually got dedicated threads around here, so it will be good to see 'em all in the one spot.

The comics have mellowed out over the years but the seasonal podcast is one of the funniest out there. Haven't seen the show yet though.
