With all this talk of hype and 2023 greatness and top this and that, I figured we needed an official Personal Top Five thread.

Here we'd be looking for not the "best" games or most important, but the top five games that mean the most to you, you enjoyed the most, or perhaps the ones you return to most often. I'd love to see what this board's overall tastes are.

MINE (recent-game heavy) :

1. The Last of Us

What else needs to be said? All-time great story, characters, incredibly tense gameplay on higher difficulties.

2. No Man's Sky

Amazing achievement in player liberty and expression. Wonder and awe.

3. The Last Of Us Part II

I get the controversy, but man does this one take you on a journey.

4. Castlevania Bloodlines

By far my favorite Castlevania game. INCREDIBLE industrial environments, two characters, agile combat, classic Castlevania formula.

5. Death Stranding

Game of last gen.

standards change, as an 80s kid atic atac was fucking amazing back then, but it obviously wont compare to silent hill 2 since the tech wasnt there.

Then in the fifth slot I’m gonna go outside the box a little and say it’s an amalgam of Bethesda RPGs — Oblivion, Fallout 3 & Fallout 4. All have fatal flaws that make them extremely difficult to find individually-worthy in this slot, but man, as a collective experience, I got way more than my money’s worth out of these games.

If I wanna get hypernostalgic about it, I might say something like ..

Super Metroid - Gave me my love for the genre. I haven't played this one in quite a while but I frequently watch Oatsngoats play the game (and his recent speedrun record was incredible).

Symphony of the Night - Gave me my love for this variation of the genre. Replay IGAvanias fairly often and SotN is part of that.

Resident Evil 2 - Cemented my love for cheesy survival horror, the franchise and Capcom. Frequently replay one or more RE titles. All time favorite franchise and game developer.

Final Fantasy II (IV) - Gave me my love for RPGs in general. Haven't played through it in a few years but will do so if SQEnix ever puts the pixel remasters on a decent sale. My favorite FF story even though it's cliche and basic.

Nier: Automata - Best experience I've ever had finishing a game and it was 100% blind. One I wish I could forget about and experience for the first time again. Alas...

While all of these would rank somewhere on my top games of all time list only Nier is definitely a top 5 (it's actually #1). The rest were very important milestones of gaming for me and shaped my tastes in games.
