The Official Sonic's Megadrive/Genesis Ultimate Collection thread

So are you guys going to play through games before you jump to new ones, or will you just play to get all of the achievements?

I think I will play for the achievements. I worry that if I try to complete more than a handful of entire games I will just get burnt out.

Yeah, this collection is a must buy! Honestly I'm just buying it for the Sonic & Phantasy Star games. Everything else is a bonus. A sweet bonus.

No, it doesn't. Did you ever try joining another player's game in SoR2 on Live? The input lag kills the experience and makes the harder difficulties impossible.

Backbone has a poor reputation for a reason. You've seen all of those screenshots with the smudge filter, right?

I've played games with the smudge filter, some(most) look terrible some look smoother. Sonic 1 for example looks better with it on, Street of Rage 2 looks better with it off it just depends on the size and detail level of the sprites, in my opinion and all that.

As for the online co-op it worked fine for me. I'll admit to never playing it on the harder difficulties, I couldn't finish the game on default difficulty with a buddy in the same room, never mind online. But I did play it online with little to no lag with friends. I imagine if I was playing it with random players who could be further than 10 miles from my house then the experience would be a lot worse. In fact I did experience that when trying to play Sonic 2 against random opponents, lost almost every round due to mis timed jumps from lag.

So here's the question: would you rather have crap online play or no online play at all? By the nature of the emulation this is the only way we'll get online play for these titles without a developer rebuilding the games for modern consoles, and that just isn't going to happen for a 30 games in 1 compilation.

HOT I WANT

Holy crap I want the vinyl D:

So... who's idea was it to have phantasy star 1 as a freaking unlockable? I still have to play through that one and I'm not going to be happy if I have to play PS2,3,4 or something just to be able to play the first =/

Tempted to just finally sink down and import the phantasy star collection.... but my tv is crap and I know I would love playing it upscaled....

bah... or should I just get both... blagh Like I have that much money:lol

This is probably the best collection ever. Any retro fan not biting on this one is a damn fool!

I may be one of those damn fools. I have nearly 1/4 of those games, many on multiple platforms. I'm sorta sick of buying them over and over, and though I would agree that it would still be worth the price for the 3/4 of games I don't own...I'd much rather have leaderboards and online co-op.

Secondly, my 32X freezes up on me from time to time...I'd love to have a collection of 32X games on there was well, at least all the SEGA ones.

It's not only a monetary investment, but a time investment as well. I would play through these games if there were leaderboards and online play.

It's all about convenience factor for me. Then again there's no sense in dragging this out any further. Eventually I'll have to drag my Genesis out of storage and play some fuckin' Castle of Illusion.

Oh wait I still have to buy new A/V cables. DARN IT

Bump with a bit of new info(unconfirmed though so be wary)

Alien Syndrome (Arcade) -- Complete stage one and two of Alien Storm without dying.
Congo Bongo (Arcade) -- Finish stage one of Streets of Rage with all three characters.
Fantasy Zone (Arcade) -- Earn 80,000 points in Flicky.
Golden Axe Warrior -- Use magic ten times in Golden Axe 3.
Phantasy Star -- Finish act 1 of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with two players.
Shinobi (Arcade) -- Finish stage one of Shinobi 3: The Return of the Ninja Master without dying.
Space Harrier (Arcade) -- Earn 1,500,000 points in stage one of Super Thunder Blade.
Zaxxon (Arcade) -- Collect five coins in DecapAttack.

Great now when I think of Streets of Rage I'll think of Congo Bongo.

Are there any reports of one version being better than the other?

I heard the PS3 version is blurry and it runs smoother on XBOX360. I think gametrailers made a comparison.
Sorry

Does SOR3 have 4 characters? Skate, Zan, Axel and Blaze?
Whoops I did not catch that.

The Sonic 2 unlockable is kind of weird as well. I wonder how it's supposed to register beating a stage with two players(unless it's actually in the two-player mode)

Whimsical Phil said:
Actually, you have you beat the first stage of the original Streets of Rage with all three characters to unlock Congo Bongo.

Not SoR3.

If I remember correctly, the rest are accurate.

Well that makes quite a bit more sense. Thanks.

which of the achievements do you think is the most difficult?
None of them are terribly difficult.

Personally, the hardest one for me to get was the Columns achievement, just because I'm not terribly good at Columns and I'm not a big fan of the game.

You can also use a few old cheats to get some easy achievements. For instance:

Super Thunder Blade - Set the difficulty to hard, and fly your chopper in the upper left or right corner of the screen. Stay in the corner and fire non-stop--nothing will hit you. You should reach the proper point value before you finish stage 1. Note that this doesn't work on mini-bosses or bosses.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - Choose to continue the story mode and enter the password: Yellow Bean, Has Bean (the little orange guy), Blue Bean, Blue Bean. This will put you at the final boss on the easy mode. Now you just need to complete one stage for the achievement.

Vectorman 2 - When you start playing, pause the game and press Up, Right, X, Y, X, Down, Left, X, Down (on the Xbox controller). Unpause, and you'll go to a level select screen. Change "Planet Fall" to "Dig 2" and hit X. You'll warp to Area 11 for an instant achievement.

The other big cheat for achievements is to abuse save states. When you make some solid progress in a game, just save your game. If you screw up afterwards, it takes about three seconds to reload and try again. Save states make it fairly easy to earn achievements for games like Fatal Labyrinth, Sonic Spinball, Flicky, the puzzle games, etc.

It takes a little effort, but with some dedication you can earn the full 1000 in an evening.

Top Ten

10. Alex Kidd: Get 1,000 coins. This requires actually playing Alex Kidd. There should have been an alternate method to unlock this achievement. Like making a movie of you kneeing yourself in the balls with that X360 movie-maker thingie.
9. Comix Zone: Complete first episode. This is actually kind of a tough game IMO...probably the toughest in this set next to the Eccos. That said beating the first episode is totally do-able by anyone once you get used to the controls.
8. Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - Dr. Robotnik is a bit of an asshole and this is one of the few achievements that actually requires beating the game.
7. Vectorman 2: Reach Scene 11. You actually have to get somewhat far in this game to unlock this one. A far cry from "beat stage 1" for many of the others.
6. Golden Axe: Collect 20 magic powerups. Like Alex Kidd you actually have to play this game to unlock the achievement. It should have been something easier like drink a year-old gallon of milk in one sitting.
5. No Life - Unlocking all of the videos involves playing the games. Chances are one or two of these games is Alex Kidd/Golden Axe....bummer.
4. Play all arcade titles - This requires playing Congo Bongo...nuff said.
3. Blast Processing - You're required to play both Alex Kidd AND Golden Axe. You're better off running into a police station while waving a gun around.
2. View all artwork - Who knows what ungodly combination of bad games you'll have to play to get this one.
1. Unlock Everything - Makes sense right cause this one is basically #s 2 through 10 and then some.

Or you could just cheat! Nevermind I'm out of here. I'll waste the extra 30 minutes getting every achievement legitimately.

Man. I need this to come out like, now. I still have the music from the original Phantasy Star in my head; I'm preparing for nostalgia overload.

They should have added Out Run to this compilation, maybe Virtua Racing, but otherwise, I'll pick this up when I have the spare cash.

Enchanted Castle just isn't a good game. Should have forgotten that altogether and put Miracle World or Shinobi World in there.

Virtua Racing was awful on the 32x so they shouldn't have(and they are saving Outrun for XLBA) Super Monaco GP on the other hand would have been awesome.

TheSonicRetard said:
LMAO No it wasn't, the 32X port of Virtua Racing is the best version of the game, period.

I played it after playing the arcade for a while, the game looked like ass back in the day, it would look hideous now(also Daytona and Sega Rally are much better games than Virtua Racing)

Agreed, or even Zillion or Castle of Illusion, oh well there's always next time.

If they could put Castle of Illusion then Quack Attack is a must.

Guess we will be waiting for Mickey Mouse's Ultimate Genesis/MD collection. Then they could also throw in Aladdin and the Lion King et al :D

How about Mickey Mouse's Ultimate 16-bit collection, then we could have the SNES version of Aladdin and Goofy's Goof Troop too.

Okay, let's see.
Altered Beast (Arcade) -- Earn 100,000 points in in stage one of Altered Beast (Genesis)
Alien Syndrome (Arcade) -- Complete stage one and two of Alien Storm without dying.
Congo Bongo (Arcade) -- Finish stage one of Streets of Rage with all three characters.

Oh Sega, you just never listen, do you? One, two, three ...

*punches nine kittens in the face*

Yeah that's great we could get Sony imagesoft, Capcom, Virgin, and Sega to put together the ultimate 8-16bit Disney compilation.

Might as well ask for a million bucks while you're at it.

It'll take you maybe 15 minutes to unlock all of the arcade games. It's still a bit silly to lock them in the first place but it ain't worth punching a kitten over.

Little known secret: VectorMan 2 isn't very good and I suspect most people haven't ever played it, but they assume it's good because VectorMan 1 was awesome. VectorMan 2 is like everything that made VectorMan 1 awesome, with half the polish and padded out to be twice as long as it needs to be.

Thus, reaching Scene 11 is probably kind of tedious.

To be fair I did play it at least once. It was all kind of a blur after awhile. Though I remember the title-screen really sticking out to me(it looked so cheap and bland next to the original's.)

I played through both, back-to-back a few years ago. Fell in love with the first game, but the second game... whereas in the first VectorMan, every level was set in a unique environment, VectorMan 2 has you revisit environments across several different levels, and when playing through the same environment a second time, they never really bother to change the gameplay up. It's just more of the same in a different order.

I wish more games had a beat the game achievement attached to them, I would have brought this collection just to show that I beat a lot of the classic games.

Ugh. UGH.

I only have one PS3 controller right now. Like Duck said, is there a way to get 2 players with one controller? Because if I have to spend $50 on an extra controller just to unlock one damn game.... seriously, didn't Sega think that over?

I just tested it out on Sonic 2 for the Genesis and you can enter two-player mode with only one controller hooked up. Once you complete a level, you just have to wait one minute for the other player to die. I'm not sure if that counts as "finishing" the level with two players, though.

Although it sounds like you have to complete Act 1 of the actual game while a second player controls Tails...

Feeling this as well just now. Fucking dumb.

Still hurts that this won't have ToeJam and Earl but I'm still picking it up tuesday. So I'm looking at the OP and I know it says some games are SUGC exclusive but I'm asking anyways, does the 360 versions seriiously not have Shing Force 1 and 2 and NO SoR games? WTF?

I’ll answer this then… Sonic & Knuckles is not combinable with Sonic 2 or 3 in the collection I’m afraid.

Also Sonic CD is a Mega CD/SEGA CD game so perhaps it will materialise another time should SEGA do a compilation of games that were launched with the console add-ons.
I’m sure lots of you would like a chance to play some of the 32X titles for instance.

Sonic CD is also available on the Sonic Gems Collection incidentally.

That guy works for Sega Europe BTW:
