On the bright side... if those double faults somehow miraculously disappear..

Anyway. Shit shit fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. Just lobbing the serve in would be better. I don't think I've ever been as angry during a match before.

thanks oudin for ruining my weekend. i hate your face

I did exactly what your avatar does. SHe really did. I said no to party invitations tonight to watch this.. what the fuck is left? Federer winning another one or Murray pushing himself to victory. Oudin has ruined this weekend and the next week and the next weekend. Thanks a lot! Go Clijsters (my faint back-up plan).

(She's a good player with a great prospect and a much more interesting gameplan than the majority of the other up-and-comers. She can beat Petrova and win slams in the future. She's a great surprise and a most positive addition to the tour. But she ruined my weekend.)

i still crack up when i see my avatar, especially since i did it as well. 4 months until the Australian open, she had better work on that

Coming up, the battle of the big serves, Roddick vs. John Isner.

oh theyre coming up? Isner looks like such a giant on the court. i was cracking up when his opponent last game lobbed it up when Isner came to the next. commentators said "that is NOT what you want to do to Isner" :lol

Well what's left, there is always Federer. Nadal. Clijsters on the comeback trail. Djokovic for the laughs. Serena, Pennetta and Wozzy/Cirstea.

Isner has never won a set off Roddick.

Does anyone know of any articles which analyze the physics of Roddick's serve? Apparently, Sharapova has been trying to serve more like him to minimize shoulder(?) movement, but it's not working out for her too well. Roddick's serve is very unorthodox, but needless to say, it is very effective. I wonder how he is able to generate such explosive power with a very "compact" serve like his. He doesn't toss the ball very high and it seems like he almost stops his arm mid-swing before he nails the ball in. It's so weird.

There probably are some such articles, but I remember reading an interview where he explained how the serve motion came together more as a lucky accident.. Against better judgement he served a little oddly and then suddenly it just clicked. He looks like a loaded spring releasing when serving.

You know what must be done.

Put all of your faith into Nadal.

I wouldn't exactly be surprised if he won it all.

It would be a surprise if he won considering he hasn't exactly played well since he returned from his injury and he's never even made it to the finals at the US Open.

How far did he get at the Australian Open before 2009?

I don't think he needs it. Looks like he's back in the game. I have a tendency to root for the ones who don't win. Maybe I'll just put it all on Monfils now, at least he's a good character.

Federer hasn't got an interesting match lined up before the semis. Clijsters: Yes. Beat Venus. Djokervic... Pennetta is interesting. I've got a sum of money on Cirstea beating Wozzy.. Woz has seemed just hopelessly passive and bland lately, she'll get a beating.

I should be getting drunk right now.

yea when i watch roddick serve its just so mind blowing. it doesnt look like a full serve at all and is just so quick. steps up, cocks his elbow back a little and smashes that thing at 140mph. crazy

The semis, but it's still a different situation. He's battling back from an injury still while the other top players are in great shape.

At least his service motion is still the same.

Sharapova is coming back from a rotator cuff tear. I started playing tennis about two years ago, and I tore my rotator cuff in my first year of learning tennis. I would serve very hard using my arm/shoulder, with almost no body or wrist/leg weight transfer. I would always chase bad tosses, wherein I would hit a hard flat serve either behind my body or too far over my head.

It's fucking brutal. I haven't had surgery (not a real athlete, no ridiculous $$$ for the recovery required) nor have I attended any real physiotherapy, but it's something that simply never heals itself. I worked out in the gym for a couple of months and was able to play up until mid August of this year before I re-aggravated my shoulder. I use an even more abbreviated serve than the Roddick serve (I get almost all my power from wrist) and it sucks - a great serve for me is probably around 70 mph. I can actually hit the ball harder using a sidearm motion, and I have seen some people serving sidearm to deal with the injury.

This injury is horrible - you can feel it even during forehands/backhands even though I haven't aggravated it on a groundstroke - I have no confidence in my overhead or net play as reacting quickly for a volley can aggravate the tear. Basically right when I started learning the game, I get a "career" ending injury - FML.

1 year of tennis has been harder on my body than 2 years of contact and ~6 years of non-contact hockey.

That sucks man, I'm sorry. I hurt my back once because I didn't stretch before playing and was also chasing bad tosses and the like. Luckily, I recovered fully, and now am extra careful about what I do on the court.

edit: Also, thanks for posting the Popular Mechanics article, that is exactly what I was looking for. I knew they had a "science behind sports" series of articles, but wasn't sure if they did the tennis serve or not.

I would watch Federer play a brick wall. I never get tired of seeing the master at work.

I had a bad feeling when Roddick failed to capitalize on the 0-40 he had in the first set. Hope he'll pull through.
