Don't Panic! It's Time For The Fall Update!

At long last, this year's Fall Update is here, bringing with it a myriad of new features. This thread is for voicing your opinions on how these new features, be they controversial (Friend-of-Friends), awesome (Original Xbox Downloads), or simply ripped off from Sony (XMB lol).

But first, a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood Spider-Jerusalem!

Here's what the general consensus seems to be about the Fall Update, in case you're too damn lazy to read the whole thread:
+ The dashboard blades are a lot faster now, and even though it seems to still take the same amount of time to load everything up, the quicker speed seems to be popular, albeit taking some getting use to. New visual tricks, like fading to black for arcade and Xbox games, are also pretty popular.
+ Speaking of Xbox games, the load times on Original Xbox titles are great. Ever play Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex? Remember how terrible the load times were? Well perhaps you'd be happy to know that:

+ Inside Xbox apparently IS available in Europe, though if you use it, you're treated to a welcome message from the community manager with the greatest name ever.

+ Concerning video-playback, there's a lot of videophile techno-jargon that I don't really understand (nor care about). All you need to know: the added and improved playback options - great; Divx and XviD - spotty, but works well when it works.
+ Slightly off-topic, but the Bioshock DLC is out. And it's awesome.
+ Live in Australia? Have Xbox Live Silver? If you answered yes to one or either of those, you may be getting fucked over by Microsoft! Yay! According to The_Dude:

The Guide pulls up faster, but it takes the information just as long to load. Like, it just sits blank for a second. But it still adds to the overall feel for it to slide up faster.
 
Don´t see the update? Either:
- test your Live connection
- insert an original XBOX game
Both gives you the download prompt. :)

Edit: Yes!!
Edit 2: If they do this for every Xbox Original game as they are released, I'm totally fine with them charging for the other themes and pictures (but they still need to allow people to preview them).
 
It takes a lot longer to log in to Live? The console starts up and it gives me that twirling circle for 20 seconds? Ouch. Other then that I love the new faster Guide.
 
Nice. The dashboard is so much faster. Especially the XBLA area. It used to take 30 seconds to count my games, then only loaded 5 icons at a time. Now everything is instantly there. Sweetness.
 
Runs a lot faster which is really nice. But what's up with the 'inside xbox' button I saw on the walkthrough video of the update. There isn't any button. Plus friends online and messages is still two seperate buttons. Strange. Didn't look like that in the video. Rest is cool though.
 
I'm all for the sped-up blades and what-not, but they move a little too fast for my liking. It's just kind of annoying. As for FoF, there's nothing really to say that won't turn it into a debate on whether it's necessary or not, so let me just get this out of the way: it's kinda cool that I can stalk Gowans through Rlan's profile (online stalking - it's AWWWWWRIIIIGHT!), but this is still pretty fucking pointless.
 
FF and FR with the triggers work, though i'd love to skip chapters with the bumpers, shame they didn't include this.

I think it's regional

in canada they don't seem to have it yet

so if there's no feed for the region, they just expand the single button to two like it was before
 
Under "Music Artists" there is a free theme and picture pack for Dream Theater.
No interest in that one, but maybe they will release them for other artists in the future.
 
Just quit game to dashboard and it asked me to download it.

Holy shit it does load much faster :lol

This dashboard seems a little weird now....takes a bit of getting used to.

It's a bit hidden:
Marketplace blade...Spotlight...Free Stuff.

And although they are free, NONE of the 8 new themes and picture packs seem to be listed in there. :-(
 
I like the new XMB-esque games blade, and I think it's organized way better than the PS3's (though lacks the personality), but it makes me wish Microsoft would add a damn favorites option. It would be a lot easier for me to put Space Giraffe, Pac-Man CE, Puzzle Quest, and a few more on a smaller list than have to scroll through all my damn arcade games to find the one I want.

It's not deal-breaking or anything, but it would've been nice.
 
I'm Canadian too and don't see the Inside Xbox tab. I understand the feed is regional, but since 99% of US news applies to us too, it would've been nice to see here.
 
First impressions of video playback:

+ Codec support seems very good. 95%+ of my divx/xvid library seems playable. Those that are not conveniently show up with a red x.
+ Video playback quality seems quite good. Comparable with PC playback quality and much better than DVD players.
+ HD files stream smoothly.

- Some vids take 15-20 seconds to buffer before start-up. Others start instantaneously. Weird.
- A few vids required multiple attempts to start.
- Fast forward/rewind functionality is sluggish (not unexpectedly)
- Haven't been able to get subtitles to work (.srt files).

Seems like a solid implementation overall.
 
Very nice.

The Friends Playing tab under Games Library (whose list, sadly, only includes Arcade games for some reason) has finally reached what they promised like two years ago. It's rad.

And the FoF feature is actually pretty awesome. It's nice to have like a zillion more profiles to peruse and see what they're up to.

Also, FL is improved x1000. I love that mottos come up and the name expands with no hit to scroll performance.

The dial at log in is kind of annoying but I'd rather it all at once up front if I can navigate everything else this damn fast.

Also, the update has NOT fixed the No Log Onto Live Without Starting A Game bug.

-Movie previews on the fly in full screen are pretty cool but really ugly and blocky :(
-inside xbox is pretty cool-just get rid of Major Nelsons mug.

I did about 3 months ago when I bought a HDD media player since I never expected divx to happen. But its' still useful now because you cant stream through Media Centre :(

Crimson Skies theme is beautiful.
 
my LOST and Dexter divx/xvid episodes do not work, the console asked to download a file do add support for these kind of videos, but then it was impossible to play the videos due to "lack of support"

Under Account Management > Download history now has the twist UI (Filter thingy). You can sort your download history by Games content or Videos.

That's a great feature for people on their second Xbox 360 or people who upgrade to an Elite or whatever and who want to redownload their stuff like XBLA games.
