The Official Xbox 360 Fall 2007 Update Impressions Thread

andrewfee said:
The problem is your shitty router, not the 360. Either update the firmware on it and see if that fixes things (you may also want to try reconfiguring the network settings on the 360) or buy another.

I had the problem initially, but updating my router firmware got it signing in on startup no problem.

Yeah, I'm not sure I like that change. However, network performance is significantly improved here - thumbnails for images are pretty much instantly there (you had to wait a second or so for it to create them before) and you can even fast-forward and resume videos at a reasonable speed. (video performance in general seems a lot better now)

Things I hate: Lists just loop when you hit the bottom now. I want it to stop scrolling when I get there, letting me hit down to get to the top after, rather than looping.

Guide may be quicker coming up, but the time it takes to draw the text etc is no quicker. Nice and fast closing it though.

No option to stop games/dvds/hd dvds booting when inserted.

No 24Hz output for HD DVD, no 50Hz VGA option, and because people are going to start bitching about resolutions/aspect ratios, no 1920x1440 either.

They really need to let you turn off notifications for people signing in, or ideally let you choose what people you want to see sign-in notifications from.
Here's soething I just noticed that pissed me off. Alot of the old Artist of the Months music videos I saved along with some past E3 specials I was holding on to are gone. It looks like the first time you pop through the video section on your HDD, it automatically cleans some of the older ones out. I was saving those precisly because you can't find them anymore on the MP. WTF man? So none of your video content is guarenteed if Microsoft arbitrarily decides to delete what it deems outdated now? Seriously, wtf?

**EDIT nevermind. They just categorized them wrong. Who would've thought Matisyahu singing KwoaC was a game video. : /

My honest impression? Pretty worthless.

Sure, we get Xvid/Divx for all our movie-piracy/porntastic needs, but I doubt I'll honestly ever use it. Still, this is about the only feature I can see as actually warranting mention since I'm sure that at least some people will actually use it.

The "remove XBLA demos from gamertag" thing doesn't even work (big surprise), the reorganization is neither more intuitive or useful in any way I can tell, and the "speed" thing just gives us an excuse to stare at the "buffering" icon longer. Actually feels...slower..to me to get a full load in for some reason. Maybe it's my imagination.

The biography page is so low-rent text box it's pathetic, the "inside Xbox" crap is just obnoxious, and I still file the "FOF" feature under "who cares?"

Meh. I probably just sound like a hater, but it would be nice if one of these times they actually did something worthwhile with the updates. It's far from perfect, but all of the significant problems seem to constantly be ignored in favor of trivial crap from my perspective.

So far I'm pretty pleased with the new update, few complaints/concerns though...

*Media/Video
- Enlarge thumbnails look totally hideous now, should of left them at their original resolution.

*XBLA/Trial-Games
- How in the fuck do I remove them from my GamerScore?!

With the XBLA games, it is only for future games sadly. You cannot hide Yaris or Novadrome from the public.

Love the update but yeah...

2 years... 2 fucking years. I need to see game invites, chat invites, new messages, but I don't need the constant blah is online blah just downloaded a title update blah's 360 crashed blah is in the middle of RROD onset so you're going to see this message 10 times over the next 3 minutes blah is online. Blah is online. Argh!!!

Where does happen? While playing a game I assume, but surely not while watching a video in full screen, right?

As for FoF, there's nothing really to say that won't turn it into a debate on whether it's necessary or not, so let me just get this out of the way: it's kinda cool that I can stalk Gowans through Rlan's profile (online stalking - it's AWWWWWRIIIIGHT!), but this is still pretty fucking pointless.

I think for those that are bumping into the 100 friends limit (not me) it gives them a work around at least until Microsoft does something about it. They can create a silver account as a supplementary friends list and just add that silver account to their actual friends list. The problem here is that those that are running into the 100 friends limit are the same people who don't like the idea of their name showing up on other peoples friends list (internet celebrates and what not). How controversial.

At the end of the day, I really will never be completely satisfied with a dashboard update until they add multi-voice chat. Bandwidth-schwanwidth, there has to be a way to do this. It's the best solution for ignoring assholes online and still having the ability to talk to all your friends in game.

Sorry if this has been asked.

Can anyone in a PAL territory running VGA confirm if Psychonauts and Halo work on PAL60 mode, or whether they still get 'This Original Xbox Game only works with 50hz mode' messages pop up?

If they are 60hz I'm buying those two asap.

Thanks.

If I downloaded the full game of either of those, I don't care to hide that fact and I also wouldn't mind if they stayed there forever. I own the games. They are part of my play history. So be it. What I don't want are damn demos I never wanted or owned clogging everything else up. How stupid is that? Why was this ever allowed to come into being and why can't they correct it? It's a fucking stupid thing to have to be aware of, and yet here we are two years later. I swear, fucking morons up there in Redmond.

Nope not during video, where I actually wouldn't mind it but right over my conversation wheel in Mass Effect or ruining my perfect run in Geometry Wars. Seriously, every instant messenger has had this notification option since the 90's, what's the deal?

I also want to know this. The 50hz PAL version of Halo is severely gimped

I dunno, but it seems you guys always get the stick end of the lolipop, so I wouldn't hold my breath that you guys actually got any special attention.

It should do i plugged in my 500gb HD and it worked flawlessly. Did you remember to change the source?

Speaking of that. I look down and see this:

(X) Change Video Spurce

Anyone else notice that typo? Is it just me?

If I had been able to get satellite television there's no way in hell I would have gotten cable internet. It sucks ass on the Westside of Los Angeles (third apartment I've had with it).

And there is no way at all to disable it save for cutting the internet connection?

Normally I wouldn't hold out much hope, but in this case it would be a fairly simple job of simply using the NTSC version as the master version on the store which would be 60hz. If however they used the original versions in each different territory then it's fucked.

Basically I, and many like me, are asking for some kind (and wealthy) soul to potentially waste £10 to find out for us poor folk.

(Mild) Sexual favours may be offered in return.

The Guide pulls up faster, but it takes the information just as long to load. Like, it just sits blank for a second. But it still adds to the overall feel for it to slide up faster.

I was figuring it was going to be like that. The delay was never really the dashboard itself, it's probably all the waits for the online shit all the time. That will probably never go away.

I'm looking forward to messing around with the new dashboard tonight. Don't have the time. Have to work. :-(

Right now you have:

Show notifications
> when playing a movie
Play sound with notifications

as options. "Notifications" includes people signing in, new messages, game invites, chat invites, downloads finishing.

They should have:

Show notifications
> when playing a movie
> when a friend signs in
> when a download finishes
> when receiving an invite
Play sounds with notifications.

Just a quick question. Since almost every HD video content on the web comes on .mkv, not .avi, and I want my 360 to play those 720p/1080p videos I can't play on my computer... is this divx/xvid update totally useless for me or is it a way to play those mkv files?

in the UK this is all we get on inside xbox

Sorry to quote this twice in two seperate posts but on a UK specific board someone with money, a big hard drive and an bigger heart spunked the cash already.

They are the PAL versions meaning they WILL NOT WORK through VGA in PAL territories.

This relates to Halo, Crash Bandicoot, Psychonauts and Fusion Frenzy of the current selection. Leaving 3 games that actually work for everyone in Europe.

Bollocks.

I posted this in the other thread, but it might be more relevant here.

This might have been mentioned already, but for the Mac users that use Connect360, compatible Xvid files will work if you change the extension to ".mov".

afaik, useless... they need a new container.

Thats a shame. Hopefully they implement this in the near future. Apart from this its f'ing excellent. More smoother than XBMC and easier FF and RW functions.

Just tested the latest xvid episode of Dexter in its original form of release.

Playing flawless via streaming.

this is weird, you were able to see your dexter episode by streaming it, maybe I forgot to mention I used a 1Gb pendrive in a front USB slot, the folders and files are correctly shown but the xvid/divx files cannot be played...I tried the direct play of every single divx/xvid I have on my pc (by an external hdd or pendrive) and none worked.
any suggestion?

No, everybody is screwed.

.MKV is a container, just like .AVI is.

Let's say the CODEC is the language of a book, while the format (.AVI, .MKV) is the book.

You could read the book (you know english! In this case, h.264) but you don't know how to open the book (in this case, .MKV).

You could demux both the video and audio streams off the .MKV and remux them into a .AVI container. The good news is that you wouldn't be re-encoding the video. The bad news is that this is very user unfriendly.

Microsoft should really "open" the codec part of 360 video playing functionality. That way, the scene would create codecs for it. But it will never happen.

My system takes longer to load. Logo now stays for a bit longer. And they should have kept or change the pics that designated marketplace items. It looks very plain after being there for months. And the hell if I could notice any difference in blade speeds.

Also whats up with the icons in the video dash looking like a mess?

usually you have to reencode the audio file too, since 360 doesn't support 5.1 AAC. :-/

Are you streaming from your PC?

If so I had trouble and had to resync my PC with my Xbox, download the Apple are Bastards Optional Media Update and restart everything. After that everything played fine bar one video, which I simply imported into my WMP11 library and got working after that.

Of course like everything to do with networking Microsoft Xboxs and Microsoft Windows PCs there could be one box you haven't ticked somewhere on an obscure window in your settings that means it will never work even though the FAQS and guides Microsoft wrote for the process don't mention it anywhere.

It still occasionally have to create an entirely new network for the Xbox because it decided there isn't a computer connected to it. Even though it's connecting to Xbox Live THROUGH THAT COMPUTER. Shouting 'It's that one over there' never seems to work either.

Best update ever, been playing around with it for a while, watched a few Xvid AVI's that worked flawlessly, and was presently surprised by the FoF thing, which actually does seem to work as a makeshift clan (Gowans please change the NeoGAF VIP icon). However, I'm still annoyed with no 16:10 and the lack of the little free stuff tab and good inside xbox stuff for the UK.

no I am not streaming it, it's from a portable hard drive.

I just tried to play an xvid and WMV file from the HHD and it worked but the avi and mov dont.

When you got DTS in your hands it's even worse... And muxing h264 into mp4 is an ass.

The update rules. The shit in the dashboard is laid out much more intelligently, and attractively, and offers tons more options for organization. Everything is faster, too. Couldn't be better.

No argument for XMB > Dash anymore, as far as I'm concerned. The last few problems of the dash are gone.

I don't like how XBLA have kinda been put in a corner.

The tab bit there seems unnecesary and im not a fan of it. I would have liked a section specifically for XBLA games that split up trials and full games.

Nice update though.

How do you remove XBLA demos from the played games list? I thought this feature was being added.

edit: Apparently it's an option somewhere and only works on future games... Am I reading these posts right? Where's this option?

Aside from that my impressions are very positive. Better layout (less drilling through menus) and much snappier performance.
And my JGRF combo disk finally seems to work right!
DIVX/XVID make me very happy as well.

The guide blades slide in faster, but they're just as slow (if not slower) to actually display their content, resulting in a very minimal speed increase.

It's good, but it's not enough.

Make it even faster, MS!
