The Order:1886 "won't have QTE's every 3-4 minutes, will make them compelling"

Hopefully a demo of this is released if RAD are confident in the product. At least I'd like one before buying.

I mean, in the end, we can only go on what we've seen thus far. I know Ryse copped a LOT of criticism also for looking heavily scripted and QTE focused and it turned out to be a fantastic game (at least to me).

Hopefully 1886 ends up being as good. I like my SP focused games in this day and age of MP heavy games.

It seems some people cant handle dissenting opinions, so far from what they showed it seems like another "walk 5 feet then cutscene rinse and repeat". Dont see the fun of a shooting "turret section" and having cutscenes that shove exposition down my throat. And now the game is gonna be filled with QTEs. This is what happens when you focus on story, the interactive aspect becomes an afterthought

Maybe its just me but this game is not sounding that great. I smell a bomb. I hope it doesn't but the emphasis on QTE is not a good design choice.

"Won't be every 3-4 minutes" is now equatable to "filled with" now apparently.

RAD is not in charge of the PR campaign. Impressions from people who played the game (the thing RAD is in control of) were positive. The e3 clip was a lengthy sequence compressed into a few minutes which was why it didn't really work. Poor stage showing though, sure.

We know those impressions were based of that thermite campaign which showcased TPS mechanics with video previews to boot. This doesn't tell me anything about the game other than they've got the controls down and how the gunplay works. Second, why haven't they released the unedited E3 demo? If it was clearly cut for time then don't you think it would make a lot of sense to showcase it properly? Or maybe it's because it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Your post reminds me of the exchange Seinfeld has with Elaine about how spending a weekend in Florida with his parents is like a cup of coffee. 8 months becomes 5 before your very eyes!

Joking aside, we have a good estimation of rigorous the bug testing phase were, hence the 3 months time. Even if I give them the full 7 months (unless shipping gold is only days away from actual release), I highly doubt this involves changing or redefining game mechanics and more of world/content building.

Still, my reservations are not set in stone and I've never indicated as such but it's going to introduce something mindblowingly unexpected before they can sway me to their side.

I think the problem is that so far all the showings of the game have demonstrated very little actual gameplay. Even the sections where you have full control over the action don't seem to affect the outcome of what happens next.

It reminds me of Asura's Wrath except this looks so far to have even less game to it.
Anything less than that is a full on cinematic.

I'd really rather play a game or watch a cut-scene with little in between. I hate QTEs, especially when they throw random buttons at actions that have never used those buttons previously.

I think this will end up being the Infamous:Second Son of 2014; a graphical showpiece with not so amazing gameplay, and perhaps a lack of overall content.

Maybe it'll turn out really good, but nothing I've seen has convinced me of that. And although some hands on impressions at E3 were good, there were others that were not only less than impressed but brought up the same concerns many of us still have.

I hope it's good though and I'll wait until we get gaffer/outlet reviews before throwing the game under the bus.

I'll take both.

God of War.
Shenmue would be the correct answer. GoW is the prime example of the mechanic done wrong. Not that it's the worst offender, but by being the most successful it has influenced a lot of other games to also integrate the mechanic wrongly.

I'm not seeing why QTE frequency even needed to be spotlighted. From what I've gathered so far they're merely a vehicle to branch some scenes slightly, sort of like the fist-fights in The Walking Dead or Heavy Rain. Would people be as upset if they went the Telltale/Quantic Dream route, making it a point & click style story but with the occasional cover-shooter sequence? The 'Dramatic Door' thing is an absurd nitpick though, it's in RE4.

RAD's real problem is that they're adopting Naughty Dog's cinematic style but haven't demonstrated a vertical slice of The Order in the vein of Uncharted 3's Burning Chateau or Cruise Ship. They've shown cutscenes, a brief cover-based alleyway shoot-out, walking around with a lantern & a on-rails corridor chase. Right now it'd be like if Naughty Dog had wasted it's E3 gameplay demonstration of Uncharted 2 by showing that truck-in-the-alleyway chase. Personally if The Order is light on gameplay, I don't mind. Right now people don't really know what to expect and coupled with the lack of information it's creating an air of uncertainty about the project.

Ultimately it's a new IP, so let RAD make the game they want to make, give input on how they should change and iterate the formula once the game is out and we've had some time with it. Don't expect it to be something it isn't.

I have no idea what their opening doors QTE is like, but giving players control over how fast they open a door instead of just pressing a button to do it sounds like a great thing actually. It may actually make it meaningful to open them more slowly and take things quietly instead of just rushing through like we're used to.

The idea that people are just mocking this game without having a clue what they're talking about is kind of sad, really.
Opening doors with analog is fun in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Outlast. Works well in RE4 too, though it's more of a digital implementation. Either way, I don't really see the need for a blatant QTE on screen. Then again, I haven't see much of the game or its doors.

Okay i did exaggerate on the QTE part, but the dev justifying it like it's actually compelling is bad sign on the gameplay. That they want want focus on story so much that the game is simplified from a game with indepth mechanics to on rail garbage with pre-set consequences.

So they took out the shooting? Wtf an I reading?

Glad to see you decided to not continue making exaggerated statements.

there is no exaggeration there, from what we've seen the game feels like an interactive movie rather than a game. It feels like they would rather work in another medium "We make games we cant get around", They want tell a story but made the game a generic TPS to justify it being a game.

No, really, we literally went through this a few pages ago. And if there is no exaggeration in your posts, I'd like to see some WITH exaggeration for comparison. You might not know the meaning of the word.

Well that's it. I don't know what RAD was even thinking about trying.

Pre-order cancelled.

Developer says "it won't be a qte fest/we tried to place them in places where it would be compelling"

reaction: IT SOUNDS WORSE AND WORSE

qte fanatic? you decide!

Maybe they should have said it was a QTE fest instead. It would be a shitstorm like no to tomorrow if they said that.

Anyways were at the point that no matter what RAD says (even if it's good) it's going to backfire so they should just release good new footage and be done with it.

I am judging the game based on what they have shown, if the game had indepth mechanics to make the game more compelling it makes sense that they would Show it first and foremost. All they have shown is more cutscenes and QTE's, and generic TPS turret sections instead.

I don't think you know what this means. And they have barely shown any QTE besides the bad e3 trailer

Cover shooting = turret sections, apparently. It's too bad that TLOU, UC, and GeoW were all turret games.

Not all cover based shooters I am focusing on The order. TLOUS has more "gamey" sections then what we have seen so far from the the order. The order from the "gameplay" vids showed, most of it is shooting-cutscene-press triangle to do this-walk 3 feet- cutscence. Its like max payne 3 all over again.

Game needs to be shown better. It's a beautiful looking game, but the gameplay shown isn't very compelling.

It's a game, so there's no getting around it!

But they'll be damn sure to make it almost play itself.

I'm just disappointed so far. I have zero doubts that this will be linear as hell and bring nothing new to the table. I'm also 100% positive that Uncharted will remain linear. Unfortunately, crazy graphics will sell the console to the casual / one platform owning market.

Linear level design = on rails.

Redefining words is fun!

i think your mischaracterizing my words here. there games like dishonored that are linear but have multiple options and indepth game mechanics that make fun and have a lot of replay value and some exploration. where is that in the order 1886 ?

How dare those plebeians like games like Uncharted.

THIS

Its just sucks that game with a cool concept like this that had so much potential go down like this. RAD are limiting themselves because they want their game to be cinematic. instead of running their game in 60fps they reduced it to 30 because its "filmic" rather than have compelling gameplay and letting the player explore the world, the instead wanna hold our hands through the game to makes experience their scripted vision :/

Oh please. A well paced and thought out linear game is not a bad thing. Most linear titles, Uncharted especially, are far more polished than any open world game could ever hope to be.

People...please stop debating these folks! It's a monumental waste of time! If they wanna whine about a game they never played before, then just let them. If they don't like it, for whatever reason...who cares! Don't buy it! In the meantime, myself, and a whole bunch of other gamers are looking forward to paying this game. Nothing can, or will change that!

Have a goodnite peeps! :)

Whats wrong with being skeptical based on what the devs have shown? do i have put down 60 bucks to check on whether or not the game is good?

You could go read gameplay impressions or wait until more than one goddamn area is shown before running around screaming that the sky is falling.

Couldn't agree more!!! Criticism is fine but DAMN....

I thought we had that discussion before. Not every game must be full open world style. If you want your total freedom then i guess No Man's Sky is more your thing. But stop pls asking every other game to do the same. I have rather a good linear experience then an overblown world with tons of shit to do that have nothing to contribute to the main story.
