The Playstation Video Store Thread

Hadn't heard that ... and seems pretty far-fetched.

A network going exclusive to one online distribution system? And its on a console?
because video transactions for the most part are still pretty insignificant, money hats are still relatively inexpensive. why would universal care that they aren't on PSN if MS is paying them more than they'd see on PSN every year to be on XBLVM?

Is there a list of available content anywhere?
yeah, store.playstation.com :P

seriously though, there isn't any HD exclusive content, so everything on there is everything on the store.

Overall great launch service, hopefully we'll get weekly updates with new and catalog movies and a monthly rental subscriber option.

Now all they need is a Music Store....

:lol :lol 4 bucks for a single 25 min anime episode RENTAL. No thanks.

Everything else is pretty inline with what we have seen with other competitors. The whole cannot download HD content to PSP is stupid, but just a missed opportunity for Sony.

Does no one realise that you're paying a premium because it is a new anime that has never been aired? This isn't a show that is released on dvd, you're buying it brand new.. maybe if you paid a psn subscription fee one could bitch and moan about its price, but since we don't.. just give it a rest.

Oh I understand ... what I meant was one needs to look at the terms of the exclusivity. What are the outs? How long is the exclusivity?

I certainly expect to see some exclusivity, just that it will be short-term. Once DD gets bigger and bigger, the studios obviously want the widest audience possible.

Bingo.

The rest of the anime pricing is in line with itunes and other services. Problem is, that cheaper "season sets" aren't up yet, which makes an entire series pricey.

Exactly.

Stuff that has not been aired, or is currently just being aired will command a high fee.

I expect something similar for movies. You'll pay a rental fee that is inline with purchasing a ticket if it is something that just came out (and I'm expecting, we'll see ones that aren't even available on disc).

You're paying for convenience. It isn't a bad deal IMO. For example, let's say a movie came out a little while ago and isn't available on disc yet (or is even still in theaters). You get a friend or two over ... rent it at the cost of a single movie ticket ... and get to watch it on your hidef while puring back beers, etc.

If they really push that sort of aspect ... I'll probably be skipping out on a lot of theatrical releases! It would be frigging awesome if they could secure some movies day&date with the theatrical release!!

A nice option IMO.

agreed. they need these in place asap for TV and anime. I'd even be fine with putting off subscriptions for the foreseeable future as long as they had season pricing. and do it like itunes where you can buy a season ahead of time.

One question I have (which I assume I know the answer to). Is it only rentals that can be downloaded only a single time from the store or can purchases also only be downloaded a single store? The latter would be in line with itunes (ugggh) while the former makes more sense and is in line with XBLVM.

So has any one from Europe got access to the Video Store yet? If yes, how did you do it?

Duckroll, did you get your videos to download/work yet?

I put an offer in the OT thread for x'amd that I didn't think to put in here. This is only a one time thing (if it works) and is mainly targeted at folks who were able to buy it but unable to download it. as long as you know your external ip address and how to setup your PS3 to work with a proxy server, send me a PM with your IP address and I'll set up an allow rule for you on my US-based proxy server. Not positive it will work, but if it works for even one person then at least I'll have helped. I am not providing instruction on anything, so please don't ask me for a how to. just an ip address for a proxy server. and you NEED to PM me your external IP address first so I can add you to the firewall rules.

It's region locked via the ip
Thankfully they only block movie content and not the whole store as MS does.

Circumventing the ip region lock is no problem, but the dl speed suffers in most cases.
And creditcards may be a problem. There are a lot of cards that don't work anymore in foreign stores ...

As far as I know the amazon visa card works.

Did you actually get around the ip region lock? I tried a few free public proxies earlier but my PS3 couldn't even sign in on PSN.

The PC store let me have access and browse the categories but HD content is not available there.

Also I'm not sure what will happen if I rent some movies via the PC Store. Can I watch them on my PS3 afterwards?

Yeah I know but Duckroll is from Singapore and he got access to the store without doing anything, it was just there :lol. So I was wondering if other people may have got access too (I've read some proxy stuff several times throughout the thread, but I don't know a single thing about how that works) :p.

Dude, don't use public proxies, you'll be exchanging ur login/password n shit through it.

Oni Jazar said:
5) Really damn shame for those outside of the 50 (48?) states that can't access the store. I was hoping that with the lax enformcent on game content the video content would be the same.

What makes it worse is that their competitor has no such restrictions. Makes you wonder what the hell is going on at Sony. If WB allows Puerto Rico/USVI to rent movies through XBLM, why wouldn't they allow Sony to do the same?!?!? Of course they wouldn't do that, so the culprits are clearly Sony. Screw them.

Metalmurphy said:

actually this is not true. using the PSN store (or any other SSL site), your browser encrypts the traffic before it actually transmits it and vice versa.

edit - I mean yes you're still exchanging your username and password through it, but it's encrypted before it makes it to the proxy server and stays encrypted all the way through it.

DarkUSS said:
Really? I used this http://www.publicproxyservers.com/ but neither of the US based IPs worked.
it's possible sony is blocking access from public proxy servers.

I changed my password just in case!:D

So there is no other way around then?

I hope Sony changes the policy with renting. Look what if I'm watching a movie then something comes up and I have to leave the house and end up coming back way later, tired with no desire to finish the movie, and its gone the next day, I would feel robbed. 24hrs to finish is crap, get rid of that, keep 14 day rentals that way people in the house hold with different time schedules have a chance to watch the rental.

I even cannot see Video tab on US ps store.

sigh.

Could someone give me a bit info about bitrate of HD movies?
Xam'd HD uses the AVC codec and has a bit rate that goes as low ~2 Mbps and as high as ~28 Mbps on the PS3 bitrate calculator (usually hovers between ~5 - ~10). Selecting triangle and then information on the video says it has a 8 Mbps bitrate.

DarkUSS said:

using a fully anonymous proxy server that is not maintained on a public proxy server list :P My offer is really only for people that have paid for the first episode and can't download it. don't really want to leave it open as it's on a commercial box.

that's actually not bad for anime. large solid areas of color compress nicely. still at work so I haven't watched it yet, but can you confirm if the PS3 transcodes the AAC5.1 to DTS or Dolby?

Or, I just don't rent it. As even more people "don't rent it" i'm sure we will see it on a disc with 4 episodes for rent at Blockbuster soon. I didn't bitch and moan, I just said I wasn't going to RENT a single episode of an unknown anime for 4 bucks. Given the way anime works I probably would have considered BUYING it, no way am I renting a single episode though.

eh, pretty sure you'll end up on the losing side of that equation... well, by losing side meaning it ain't happening "soon". Just gauging the response here on GAF it seems like many are willing to or have already rented it.. and if it's good, they will likely continue to rent it. of course it's guaranteed to see an eventual DVD (and blu-ray) release.. but soon... no, probably not.

besides that, I think the purpose of his post was that these shows have to make money long before they make it to America on disc. Usually a show is released in japan, sees an upfront payment from the TV network, then sees revenue from 3990Y disc sales. By the time it makes it over to America it has seen all of that and is then packaged at 4-5 episodes for $25-30. For it to get to that last part, at somewhere along the way it still has to pass through the first two parts (or an equivalent thereof, like PSN).

Yea, I know how it works. I just don't care, its their product, they can put whatever they want on it and its their right. It's also my right as a consumer to laugh at them and say no i'm not paying you 4 bucks to rent a 25 min episode of an anime. Don't need the how, when or why, 4 bucks is a gallon of gas to me now.

I already gave them money for QORE so I can certainly either wait for

A) them to smarten up and make it either a purchase of an episode or rental of 4 episodes for that price

B) a free rental in a future issue of QORE

C) it to hit Bluray or DVD in a couple months

No need to reason it, I can wait and certainly laugh at them in the meantime.

My receiver (no hdmi, connected via optical) doesn't like AAC 5.1 tracks.... When I have the AAC box unchecked on my PS3 and I switch Xam'd to the 5.1 track my receiver still receives/outputs a stereo signal. When I check the AAC box on the PS3 and switch over to the track my receiver displays its receiving a Dolby track, but it doesn't output anything. The same thing has happened before when I've tried to play other anime with 5.1 AAC tracks.

Does anyone else think that DD and Blu Ray can coexist peacefully in the future? I would definitely like to have a monthly subscription to a downloadable movie service where I can rent 720p HD movies and if I like them enough I'd then purchase the superior 1080p Blu Ray version.

Because of netflix and blockbuster online though, the monthly price must be feasible and the initial download before I start streaming and watching a movie cannot take too long either (30 minutes tops).

Took me a little bit longer than I expected ^_^;

The store is great, but the prices are too high for most things. I did download an episode of Futurama last night, but when I figured out how much it would cost me to get all of season 1 I realized I just couldn't go very far down that road. Likewise I couldn't just get my head into the idea of paying $10 for a movie purchase with nothing more to show for it than a DRM'ed file on disk.

With the Futurama episode, though, downloading was reasonably fast. I waited about 10 minutes and then just watched it while it continued downloading in the background. Very smooth.

And I'm sure the video store is the reason why the 2.40 firmware included the (formerly only on DVD playback) noise-reduction on video files played back from disk.

Overall a nice store, well implemented, but I'll probably pull from the PS Video Store about as often as I rent from Blockbuster, which is to say maybe a couple of times a year.

None of the television content is HD? God, that was the reason I wanted this service. This went from awesome to worthless pretty damn quick.

They're SD, but (at least in the case of Futurama) the AVC bitrate is really good. No worries about over-compression from what little I've seen.

Futurama looked better from the store than it has ever looked from over the air/cable/DirecTV. Much higher bitrates, and AVC instead of MPEG-2 or analog broadcast.

The store is great, but I doubt I'll ever use it. Current irks with the whole thing

- Prices are too damn high
- No way to purchase entire seasons (no way in hell am I paying 48$ for season one of 24 :lol )
- HD TV??? Why no HD TV :<

what's the stance towards nudity ? will movies with nude scenes be warded off the service ?
Monster's Ball has nudity and its available right now. I'm guessing as long as its not a full on porno film they won't have a problem with it.

I wasn't too excited about this but the video store is HOT. The interface works beautifully. I was not aware that they were going to be offering movies in HD - pleasantly surprised. I want to download Beowulf in HD ... I have the HDD space for it too .....

Thankfully they only block movie content and not the whole store as MS does.

Are you implying the TV content isn't restricted? Or am I too hopeful?

I had immediately downloaded Robocop for rental in HD before seeing this thread. I'm in Taiwan and locked, unfortunately. I guess this just shows how easy they could lock the game content as well, but choose not to. I guess that's something. Too bad the Asian PSN may never get this service...sniff...

Yeah, I got what I wished for here; but Sony needs to adjust policies and fees.

Give me a subscription fee for a month's worth of rentals Netflix style. :\

But don't screw me in the asshole.

Yeah, TV episodes are silly especially since you can regularly find Futurama on sale for $19.99 for a full season or Firefly for $17.99. :\
