The Punisher with Thomas Jane is pretty awesome

I can understand how people didn't like warzone (its my fav of the 3) but I don't get how people don't see how much better stevenson was as frank in it. One thing I don't like about the 2004 one was it was too much of a revenge movie. The punisher isn't about revenge. I really liked how warzone established frank had killed the men responsible for his familys death years ago. Best thing about 2004 was the game.

2004 - best part were the carefully planned attacks and traps. Otherwise it was pretty dull.

2008 - action was really good. Frank Castle was too prone to breakdowns and a bit too stupid.

Prefer the 2008 version. Would love to see another hard-R rated film, or see HBO or Showtime make a series from this property. Fuck no to any network version.

The Punisher doesn't torture people with Popsicles.

I have thought about this too. It could be awesome with the right cast and writers that would take it seriously.

Yup. So much material in the Ennis MAX and Knights editions that haven't been touched in the films.

I doubt it would be any more expensive than the other action shows around.

Everybody loves an origin story, which is why we have so many of them these days.

it's only about revenge up to a point. once he says what happens to dave it stops being about revenge. he develops into the punisher as the movie goes on instead of it being an immediate light switch.

stevenson didn't work because they didn't write him properly. he should be full-on punisher at that point so his carrying a trunk of his daughter's toys and crying like a baby didn't fit. the action didn't help either since he didn't really approach things from a soldier's perspective. the scene with him twirling around with dual guns hanging upside was supremely stupid. the movie playing him as a damn joke certainly didn't help matters.

I liked him better when he was the vegan police.

Loved this flick, total 80s vibe and good over the top action. It almost felt like a newer action jackson, but nothing can top that fucking masterpiece.
Anyways, the best scene in this is the knife through the mouth.

The only scene I've scene of War Zone is the one where the guys are flipping on the roof and Frank just shoots one of them in mid-air with a rocket launcher out of nowhere.

Automatically best Punisher movie.

I greatly prefer Ray Stevenson. It was a stupid movie but made to be fun. The other was just forgettable and did not live up to expectations.

Its actually one of my favourite movies. Its really good and its just a fun movie, thomas jane is a boss aswell!

Warzone Sucks a lot. Seemed like some crappy B class movie, not the good kind.

I liked it. Was the first R-rated movie I saw on my own. Mom bought me a ticket while she and my cousin went to see whatever garbage they wanted to see.

i didnt see warzone

i thought the punisher was a serviceable movie, was enjoyable enough.

thomas jane was a perfect casting choice for that role. the rest of it was meh.

For me, they're tied.

Jane nailed the character, he is Frank Castle.

Warzone had more raw, no holding back over the top moments. I mean, how can you hate shooting at freerunners with a homing missile?

Punisher's one of the only comics I've actually picked up in the past decade, and it really sucks that all the films for him have been shit. I don't really think Marvel has the balls to do it right at this point, especially with the success of their friendlier IPs at the box office.

Getting R-rated comics-based movies out there is tough, in general. The studios and comics publishers always seem to target the broadest audience possible, even when the source material isn't suited for it.

I much preferred War Zone.

Listen to this episode of How Did This Get Made? to hear Paul Scheer and Patton Oswalt discuss the film with director Lexi Alexander. She's impressively candid, totally cognizant of the way critics and fans perceive the film, and happy to laugh at it whilst remaining staunchly unapologetic. She's a pleasure to listen to, and delivers some fascinating anecdotes about the production process.

Once again we see that America needs a rating between PG13 and R. Is R really limiting the audience that much?

The frank castle still has emotional breakdowns from time to time. in the comics. Its perfectly in tune with his character in the comics to show that side of him. Comic Frank Castle is still a man with a lot of issues that haunt him. He isn't an emotionless being. The movie portraying him still being haunted by his families death is true to the character. He is still just a man.

I think its funny you say that he didn't approach things from a soldiers perspective since thats one of the things I liked better in warzone. Thomas Janes punisher never felt like he was a former soldier to me. Ray stevenson minus a few flashy movie moments, did. He was running around in full body armor at all times, and almost always popping two in the chest and one in the head, and they way he used room sweeping tactics was very true to the military. Definitely more so then Jane using a bow and arrow during his big action scene.

Warzone also has this scene.

LOL, fuck no. Thomas Jane actually puts in a pretty good effort as Frank Castle, but the movie itself is awful. The Punisher does not carry aound fake fire hydrants for use in farcically elaborate frame-ups. War Zone was a bit better, but it's still a bad movie as well.

There needs to be a tv series based on Garth Ennis' Punisher Max run.

Also, America needs to loosen up. Big time.

But yeah...

^^^ Top grossing R-rated movies. Compare to the PG/PG-13 releases.
Cheers. Quiet a drop, I wonder what the average is like for movies not in the top 50, to get rid of freakishly succesful things.
their is only a 4 year difference between pg 13 and r. Do we really need a pg 15 in the middle?

I forget that R is 17 there. Still, since R seems to limit things so much in terms of releases, a rating between PG/PG13 and R seems needed. Maybe get rid of PG13 and go PG, M (which is 15) and then R like we do here?

Aside from the obvious problems, I thought this Punisher was way too much of a wholesome character. He never did anything fucked up that was beyond typical action hero standards. In the comics, he probably would've actually tortured that guy with a blowtorch rather than fake it with a popsicle.

Because of Manos's championing of Warzone, I ended up giving it a shot and I have to say, it is a pretty good Punisher movie. I had just finished the Max run of comics then and it felt like the comics brought to screen. Just that scene in the kitchen where the detective is like "Okay, we gotta get this guy to the station, make him talk, and..." and then Frank blows the guys head off, prompting the detective to yell something like "Goddammit Frank!"
I watched that scene and thought 'Oh man, that is sooooo The Punisher. Guy was a criminal, Frank killed him.'

That said, I still prefer Jane's Punisher movie and think that while it may not be the better adaptation, it is the better movie.

This movie has someone trying to escape from a murder spree on a sailboat. I always imagine this guy blowing on the sail to go faster.

The rest of the movie was boring as hell. Punisher doesn't punish much in it.
