The redemption of Square-Enix

The redemption of Square Enix was acquiring Eidos.

Pretty much. The former Eidos division's basically been carrying the whole company while the core SE's been floundering, and continue to flounder to this day. Eidos-SE has been riding high with a string of hits and should-be-hits. Japan-SE? Not so much.

Square Enix have been good on the PC

Hm about Agni's Philosophy, i'm not so sure everyone loved the art direction and that it was the ff everyone wanted...

It's an amazing next gen demo and has great direction, but some choices... it was too modern and realistic in the setting, clearly.

Now about SE, for me they should focus on portable for j-rpg, to actually put the emphasis on good story telling and system, and not having to deal with gigantic budgets...

Something like bravely default indeed.

They released the Tactics Ogre remake. That makes them company of the generation. Releasing a PS3 version would make them the company of all generations.

Tech demo is what I hope FF15 is like. Not a weird pretty-boy type in sight.

I don't want a Final Fantasy without prettyboys. I don't want any game without prettyboys. I would always prefer to look at attractive people rather than ugly people, and since videogames are a medium where its inhabitants' looks are custom-made, there's no excuse for ugly people at all, save to avoid intimidating sensitive ugly gamers.

They'll be redeemed when they deliver a Final Fantasy at least on par with X or XII. And those are not even close to my favorites.

Everyone is beautiful in their own way. :)

Except for Final Fantasy prettyboys.

Square has been amazing on Handheld consoles, so there is no need for redemption when they were very good already.

My big question is this, where are my 3DS games? I would think that the ease of development and the large userbase would facilitate more 3DS games, why isn't SE pumping out more games like an FF5 remake, Chrono Cross Port/Remake, or a new Dissidia?

That is a lot of money of the table that they are missing out on, why aren't they doing anything to rectify that situation?

Square-Enix isn't redeemed because Eidos is doing well. and what else were they going to do with FFXIV? leave it as is or scrap it entirely? if they think there's a way to get back their investment you'd better believe they'll try it, and in this case it was revamping the game and praying people will play it. sure, they might have just dug a deeper hole, but at least they have a chance of getting some cash.

This is actually something I've been thinking about... There's Bravely Default, DQ Heroes Rocket Slime, DQ Terry's Wonderland 3D (I think) Heroes of Ruin, KH 3DS, and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. 6 games in total, I might be forgetting something, tho. Let's just hope we get that FF6 Remake someday.

SQEX has nothing to redeem, because they've been making excellent games this entire time. Their output honestly puts most other publishers and developers to shame. No one seems to get how much they put out.

I think their full list for just 2012 is:

* Hitman Absolution
* Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
* Bravely Default
* Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D
* Gyrozetter
* Heroes of Ruin
* Gunslinger Stratos
* Dragon Quest X
* Final Fantasy VII (PC)
* Final Fantasy III (PSP)
* Sleeping Dogs
* Deus Ex: Human Revolution
* Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
* Wakfu
* Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy
* Final Fantasy XIII-2

That's a pretty huge line-up, and we haven't even seen the Lightning Saga event yet, or TGS this year. Only Activision, EA, or Ubisoft release near the same amount of games that SQEX does.

Most of the complaining seems to come from late 20s, early 30s gamers who use SQEX as a punching bag to deflect from the fact that they're just jaded now. XIII was fantastic, and so was The Last Remnant. Star Ocean is on par with any of the Tales of games, and SQEX's portable library is probably 2nd to none - maybe tied with Nintendo.

All signs for the future look bright as well, with Tomb Raider, Versus XIII, FFX HD, Type-0 coming up. Agni's Philosophy looked much better than Unreal 4, and they're already mostly done with the engine from the sound of it. Development times should speed up with the new real time editing options, combined with strategic outsourcing.

They're basically the most exciting video game company out there now, because they're truly an international company. They can bring in people from Eidos, 1st Production studio in Japan, Visual Works, or Crystal Dynamics, and get an international skill set and perspective without even having to look outside the company now. It's pretty exciting, and I think they'll keep putting out fantastic stuff.

Chrono Triggerhythm?
Chrono Triggthrhythm?
Chrono Trhythm

I'd take that in a heartbeat. Though, I figure they'd stick with game series as subtitles so that Theatrhythm could become a series of its own (ie. Theatrhythm: Chrono Trigger). I'm talking as if any of this is actually going to happen.

Their Japanese division-developed games have been lackluster shit.

On the other hand, a lot of their Western subsidiary-developed games and the games they publish are fantastic.

Head on the nail.

Buying Eidos was the best idea ever. Those games are fantastic.
Square's own games... hmmmm...

Square greenlighting a Legacy of Kain reboot and buying back the Freedom Fighters IP from EA would make me want to give them a bear hug.

Games made by Western division (former Eidos) are great, to match with incredible marketing effort (DH:HR, Sleeping Dogs, Hitman). 3DS offering is solid as well. Everything else is terrible.

I hope it gets so bad they will be forced to release FF for PC.

Their best talents left many years ago. Making surfing shovelware now.

I am not sure about that, i assumed the same but Agnes demo was amazing and Bravely Default my top wanted game for 2013, all systems considered

So, they still have it, just did not express it in FF13 series (at all) :)

By the looks of it, it seems like SE are experimenting with their own uPlay platform, so I hope people are letting them know that it´s unacceptable. It wouldn't suprise if they are using this as a testbed for future releases, and I dont´t really want this to replace Steamworks in their PC releases.

It's strange to me how Japanese game design still seems to be stuck in the PS2 era and hasn't advanced much at all this gen.

Japanese game design used to be at the cutting edge but now Western game design has far surpassed it.

Of course there are exceptions such as Mario Galaxy & Bayonetta, but you don't see a RDR or Arkham City coming out of Japan.

They weren't able to evolve as well into the HD age, given their relative lack of middleware tools.

Japanese game design is still far superior to western. They just lack in technical know how and so they've had horrible production this gen. But western game design is generally garbage, and I'd say it's regressed this gen. Nothing but heavily scripted QTE "gameplay" with hardly any replay-ability.

I hate how barely any people ITT have given credit to their solid handheld output in form of Kingdom hearts BBS and Tactics ogre.>_<

Stop playing FPS games and you will see how superior Western design is to anything Japan put out this gen. As much as I hate FPS I prefer 8hrs scripted SP campaign than 40hrs of grind with cliche anime characters in a jRPG. Nothing Japan put out this gen can match Persona 3/4 from PS2.

What I miss in Western gaming are 2D, hand-drawn dungeon crawlers e.g. Knights of the Round.

So what should I be playing? Max Payne? Tomb Raider? Uncharted? Gears? Assassin's Creed? Portal? It's all the same garbage in a different coat of paint. Western designers want you to experience one thing in exactly the same way every time. It's all scripted.

Play Dark Souls or pretty much any Nintendo game and you'll see how deficient these other games are. I'd even play cliche anime crap like Persona over these "push X to win and see awesome set piece" crap games. I bet Persona at least lets the player play and lasts for more than 5 hours.

They didn't really flub their handheld output (in fact, it's probably better than ever) but they sorely lack brand new IPs. Even if it's a new IP, it's still tied to FF or DQ.

I said it in another thread, but I quite enjoyed my time with FFXIII and never understood the hate. Sure, it's linear, but not as much as something as Uncharted and that gets a ton of love.

You should be a bit more selective with your words, because Japan put out games like Super Mario Galaxy 1&2, which are by wide margins the best games this generation.

Play Dark Souls? The same game that takes buckets from hardcore PC dungeon crawlers of 1980s and 1990s? Or are you simply tricked by TPP and new coat of HD paint? There is a reason Wizardry series still lives in Japan. Too bad you kinda forgot it all started in the West.

Portal is garbage? Damn son...

Also it's funny how you completely forgot about a multitude of indie titles, simulation games, and strategy games that came out...on PC. I'm sorry, I forgot that in West vs. East debate PCs don't exist anymore.

Best platformers this generation? Maybe. Best games this generation? You cannot say that.
