The Scribblenauts Official Thread of imagination revelations

and so we wait!

I've spent the last two days looking everywhere around my house trying to find my DS to get ready for this game. It had been driving me nuts! Just now, I found out that my sister took it to America with her! So now I'm not going to get to play this game until December =(

She's lucky there's the Atlantic ocean between us right now :lol
I know the feeling. I've been looks for my PSP for like a year now. I know it's around here somewhere.

I think probably it will - I can certainly see the mainstream press picking it up (after all the Daily Telegraph, not usually noted for its gaming coverage, did a full-page editorial on Madworld).

I pray for the day, I truly do.

*sigh* 16 hours till I set out on my little bike, one small man fighting traffic and pedestrians in his epic trek. But I will make it! I have to! This is too important!

I'm refreshing IGN and Gamespot like every three minutes now, just waiting to see when they post their reviews.

EDIT: Was on the official front page, and I just randomly broke out laughing. The trailer was playing as the guy's like "Ambitious!" "Insanely deep!' with the rising background noise, and right next to it, Maxwell is pushing a wood chipper into a tree....the juxtaposition just set me off...

I was hoping to get this and Professor Layton sometime this week but I'm starting to think these postal strikes are going to spoil my fun :(

I just got it a few hours ago and I've been playing non-stop. Very good, but the iffy controls are very disappointing. Disappointing is an understatement, it's a huge pain in the ass even for the most simplistic things.

I still can't accurately jump down a gap between two cliffs because Maxwell ends up jumping automatically every time he walks to the edge of a cliff. This is very annoying. I hope it's my fault that I overlooked something.

I've got a question for someone who already has the game. When you are entering the name of an item do you actually write the word or type it in via an on-screen keyboard (wondering because I've seen both in the preview stuff I've read)?

There are so many things in Scribblenauts that you can't help but use all the time. For instance, for flight I tend to use
a pegasus or a pterodactyl. They let you stay in the air for an unlimited time, unlike wings, jetpacks, and other tools which have a time limit. Unfortunately, so many levels I played required flight, sometimes because ladders simply weren't high enough.

For transporting things across levels,
a basket is the way to go. Need to carry a duck across the level without the cat eating it? Maybe a baby? Or possibly a lamb? A basket does it all. Just carry it yourself back to the checkpoint.

And for fighting, you can't go wrong with the almighty
wizard. He 1 hits almost everything! Even God can't compare, because the wizard is ranged. (You can also use his staff if he dies for one more insta-kill.) Also, I read that the toaster is the solution to water-based enemies... I didn't think of that, but I hope that isn't too overpowered.

I didn't play much, but some things are simply necessities. Style points are so ridiculously low that I don't bother actively trying to get them. (I average about 40 style points per level, usually the same ones, while getting under par can net me 700 points, and a fast time about 300-500 more.)

Also, in regards to that cow level people were discussing before...
There is a field at the very end of the level you need to get him to. There is also a chef in the way who will chop up the cow into steak if the cow gets within his range. :lol I used a helicopter and a rope; I should of tested if a cow would fit in my picnic basket. XD

Although there are many cheap solutions at first, tougher levels require more complex solutions... You may be able to use the cheap things during some parts, but thought will be required in the others.

The best way to play this game is with a bunch of people all of which have a DS and the game themselves. It's hilarious. I don't think I'm going to get any work done for weeks.

For those
who are frustratingly waiting to get their hands on the game, you can kill the hours in between in the same manner I am- namely, Gmod just went on sale for $5 on Steam.

sexylinktime

They even added
fucking ridiculous
achievements.

EDIT: BTW I'm sure this was mentioned, but Scribblenauts is currently the topic on the "magazine ads" thread. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=349539&page=34

Somebody made Post 217 into a full-page text ad. :lol

Not sure what GAFs views on cheats are, but apparently there's already cheats for this game. I'm only mentioning this because one cheat in particular is supposed to remove the summoning cap, which sounds pretty epic. I dunno if I want to spend 20-30 bucks on an Action Replay just for that cheat, though.
Get ready to crash your perfectly good copy of the game then :lol

As satisfying as it is to actually "scribble" on that notepad, the handwriting recognition is only passable and it's too slow. Keyboard all the way.

Good news: EBGames in Toronto is doing midnight launch.

Bad news: Midnight launch is for NHL10 (which they will still sell everything else), and Scribblenauts preorder = Only me.

Worse news: No Preorder hat despite what they had listed.

After reading this preview:
Another level placed a pool of water with a shark inside between us and the Starite. While a few options may have allowed us to circumvent the shark-infested waters, we all decided to take him out. I tried dropping a sword on its head pointy-side down, but it bounced harmlessly off its thick hide. I then dropped a hair dryer into the water with more electrifying, fruitful results.

Chris attempted to drop dynamite into the water, though the splash extinguished the fuse. He then threw waterproof C Four into the water, effectively recreating the ending of Jaws. J.C. created a Kraken, which fought with and ultimately bested the shark.

Andrew created a teleporter in an attempt to instantly apparate to the Starite -- instead, it took him to a medieval world where he was besieged by shadowy assassins. He tried distracting them with candy -- really, Andrew? -- then created a fairly anachronistic nuke. The nuke didn't detonate, however, so andrew created a laser rifle to take out the assassins. One of his lasers grazed the aforementioned WMD, and blew up the entire level.

Was wondering if there will be a place for people to upload their stories for each level? Kinda like a Wiki. It would be fun to look back at levels you completed and to see how differently others did it as well.

Gamecentre in Toronto had both games this morning son! Fuck ebgames.

I would love this. This is the kind of game where the number of possible interactions is bordering on the infinite. It'd be great to have a repository of tips, tricks, and tales.

Interesting. It is street dated in Canada for the 15th, so GameCenter is either screwing a supplier or is getting the games from the US and is just ignoring street date (which is not much of a stretch).

We really need a Wiki of some sort for this game, if only so we can compile a "Useful/Interesting/Cool" items database. And, of course, for the stories.

Argh. How much of an issue is the "control issue"?

I believe I might have oversold the game to my wife and mother-in-law. They're gonna beat me with monkey wrenches if the controls are as bad as some hint at.

They're not exactly ninjas when it comes to controlling games.

From what I played they're a pretty big issue to start with. My sister actually put it best by saying you don't CONTROL Maxwell, you simply guide him. Don't drag to walk. Instead, click the spot you want him to run to. If you're going to do some complex item manipulation do it "off screen" so that a misclick won't cause Maxwell to come bounding forward and knocking it all down

But even by the end of my session I had improved quite a bit

Ugh, is there anywhere else in South Lake Tahoe to buy games?
I went into the Kmart today and talked the guy in charge of their piss poor videogame aisle and he's like "WUT I've never heard of that before." :\

Now I'm really regretting not just ordering it on Amazon and having it show up at my house tomorrow.

I don't really see the connection between being largely clubfisted, and dealing with bad controls. Bad controls are bad controls, and even the most nimble have constant problems.

That said, I don't have my copy yet, so I dunno. :|

My wife loves the game more than I do, for me personally I am not feeling it, nothing particularly worked for me except the concept itself, I hate controls, dynamics are all over the place, levels are not very smart nor inspiring, most awful of them all are controls of picking up and throwing objects, so is getting inside the objects, connecting objects are even worse, dynamics could be easily faked by glitching, there are some confusing stuff as well like if you create a robot you are very limited in dictating him any commands or directions, I also don`t like that you can not control size of the objects, bridge is always same size and you can not type long bridge, I also hate that camera jumps back, but don`t get me wrong game is aaaa lot of fun and as I said my wife loves it :lol

You just said nearly 100% negative things and finished off by saying the game was a lot of fun? If the game is full of awful controls, awful (faked you suggest?) dynamics, confusing gameplay, restrictive objects, and a bad camera, how do you even have fun with it? :lol

Because it is fun, frustrating, confusing and unpredictable fun :lol

The heck? Preordered from amazon with release day delivery weeks ago and now tracking is saying delivery 9.16??! It was shipped today. Dammit.

Thought I could trust amazon.
Was wrong.

I made some minor edits to the Scribblenauts Wiki, cleaned up the start page and added a Post 217 Image. Guys, feel free to add stuff, you could make an entire page just for one word and the various things it is useful for, what situations it might help with, etc. Now if only we could get screenshots...

EDIT: Thanks a ton ShallNoiseUpon!
EDIT: O.o guys... I shall be back

So, here I was thinking of stylish ways to get my butterfly when I ask my 7 yo son how he got his butterfly only to learn that he got it
PAR -3
. I feel dumb.

So far I generally agree with everything he said, including the part where the game is still fun.

EDIT: An example of the kind of obtuseness he's probably talking about:
There's a level in a firehouse with three floors. The first floor, where Maxwell starts, has a cop next to a fire alarm. The ceiling/2nd floor is made up of ice platforms. The third floor has three fire vents with a fireman standing to the right of them. Next to the fireman is a long vertical drop that leads to a large room with a firetruck and the Starite. Across a short gap that the drop makes is another narrow floor with an ice block and a button at the end.

I "solved" it by melting the 2nd floor platforms with fire, just by holding the fire underneath the platforms. Then I gave Maxwell wings and floated up to the third floor, and extinguished the fire vents with an ice block. Then I just walked to the right past the fireman, dropped down, and collected the Starite next to the firetruck. I have no idea what the policeman, the fireman, the fire alarm, the red button or the firetruck were for. Starting a fire under the alarm set it off but it didn't seem to do anything.

Obviously I'll be able to try it myself tomorrow night barring catastrophe, but I'm curious. Do you feel like the dynamics are "faked"? I wasn't sure what he meant by that, and I know someone has mentioned that doing stuff like dropping a weight on a level will propel something into the air, so I assume at least some dynamics aren't fake.

I'm not entirely sure what he means by "faked", but he could mean that the "intended" physics solutions can sometimes be overridden just by kind of brute force-ing your way through and waiting for a lucky break/glitch. There have been a few levels where I don't really know what the hell happened but I wound up with the Starite.

Also added an example of the kind of design weirdness he may be talking about in the last post.

fuck, all of this complaining about the controls has really put me on the fence. Normally I'd still go for it but I'm particularly broke this week and I don't want to shell out thirty bucks for something I'm going to not get much out of (which, if the controls are truly broken, I probably won't be able to handle playing much of the game. a shame to because otherwise i know it would give me dozens, if not hundreds, of hours)

hurry up reviews :/

I ordered a while back as well. Mine shipped today and says 'next day air' on the UPS web site. Estimated delivery is the 15th.

But yeah, I would be pissed if it arrived late. Hopefully yours will show.

Just get it. I have a boatload of complaints about this game, but the bottom line is that it's still worth playing. It's a very unique and fun game.

Having a lot of fun here! Too bad I'm playing in English but it's not my mother tongue.. sometimes I have to use a translator to check the words I want :lol

Still having a lot of fun!.

Right now I'm stuck in a couple places, but I keep finding ways to get through them after a bit of brainstorming :P

I also gotta love the music. It has this mix between Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg and the Mario tunes.

And as many have said, the controls sometimes feel a bit broken but even when they are like that, I'm overall having just so much fun I don't really care about it. The only thing that really bugs me is when using the wings/jetpack, sometimes I can't get Maxwell to fly around! But usually if I keep the stylus around the top, he will eventually fly, so whatever :P

This game is definitely on my top 5 games for DS, and also my overall top 5 games when it comes to uniqueness and creativity (LBP is at the top, though :D)

I got my call from GameStop to pick up my pre-order but I got my games and hats at NWS so I guess I won't be making a trip to GS.
