The Sega master system appreciation thread of SegaScope 3D!

same guy that recently made the new Ultra CD backup RAM cart is doing a smaller, almost cart-sized Power Base Converter featuring an FM sound chip on board! he's got some videos up, it's pretty neat so far & all you have to do is hold up when the game boots to get regular/scrub sound out of it instead.

sucks that Phantasy Star 1 US had its FM sound removed but many other carts (Rampage, R-Type etc) didn't!

It's a shame. You can't even play Phantasy Star 1 in English with FM sound in the M2 port of Phantasy Star Collection on JP PS2.

really? shit, that was kinda my outside hope...great, so now it's

1) import SMS/PS1 in moonspeak
2) repro cart translated version of japanese PS1
3) SMS everdrive which is ridiculous since i just want the genesis one that does SMS & 32X anyway

Eh, I was looking for this thread :)

I dusted off my Master System II two weeks ago, when I finally found the motivation to open it and solder back the RGB connector. It's a french model, the only one to my knowledge to have shipped with RGB by default (and it's gorgeous) but it comes with a flaw: as the connector is soldered directly to the board, successive plugging/unplugging weakens and breaks the solder points. I think I left it that way for almost 20 years ^^. I took the opportunity to mod it to 60Hz, and again on this model it's as easy as soldering a jumper.

I also found the games I had with it at the time:
- Alex Kidd (bundled)
- Shinobi
- The Lucky dime caper
- Bubble Bobble
- Spiderman
- Dick Tracy
- Bonanza Bros
- Marksman shooting / Trap shooting / Safari hunt

I did break a spell by finishing relatively easily Dick Tracy, a game I thought was impossible back when I was nine. I still think it's unresponsive, frustrating and boring, but at least I got it off my backlog. For the other games, not so much though, I keep failing before the Mandara spinning heads in Shinobi and I still can't pass past the jungle in Alex Kidd. I tried Spiderman for two minutes but it's still utter crap and I couldn't bother.

And now I'm on a streak! As of today I scored:
- Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, awesome game I can't wait to get deep into it
- Castle of illusion, I had a glimpse at it's two dimensional level structure in the first three levels, I'm quite impressed.
- Putt & Putter because such games are uncommon and I heard good about it. Only 18 holes though? I finished the first course relatively easily with a par, the game itself is good but I fear it will feel really short without much replayability if I binge on it.
- Asterix, which I received today. I heard good about this one too but I'm not sure. I may post what I think in a few weeks.

And Action Fighter, Wimbledon 2, Submarine Attack, The Ninja, Sonic (1,2,chaos) are in the mail and a few others have bids on them.

Overall I feel pretty satisfied with the console today, I'm glad that I have new games to play with it but I feel a little bit ashamed to have felt for the eBay trap again. But eh, I only spent 72.90€ for 10 games so it's not like the Master System has bankrupted me already (the Saturn on the other hand...)

The roms of the unreleased Lemmings 2: Tribes for Master System and Game Gear have been made available by one of the programmers who worked on it.

They can be found here.

Whoa, awesome. Just tried the SMS version of this, seems like a really solid port! Shame it never made it to market.

Intro cutscene also looks pretty impressive.

^haha cmon Zealous, that's still a mighty fine cake! gotta figure there were likely more of that model sold worldwide than the model 1's we had

What about Dragon's Curse, Monster Lair, Dynastic Hero, and the Game Gear port of Wonder Boy (Revenge of Drancon) and Dragon's Trap?

Very nice, though. Love the Wonder Boy series and I hate how little recognition they receive, especially IV.

^in one interview that's about how Cerny made it sound there in the day, yeah...real sweatshop conditions. again parts of the SMS library take a beating sometimes for mediocrity but i don't think ive ever seen teams try to hold it out down across every genre at the time nearly solo like SOJ did back then.

I don't have a PC-Engine :(
I actually do have Wonder Boy on the Game Gear, I forgot to include it in the pic. But given they are (mostly) the same games on the Master System I don't feel the need to collect them. Plus my Game Gear is dead so I wouldn't be able to play them.

I wondered if I wanted to track a copy of the Master System version of Monster World, then decided it wouldn't be worth it, the superior version being on the Megadrive
and me not having that much money to spend
.

lol, the Wonder Boy games were the reason I got into TG16/PCE stuff. Kind of falling into it ass-backwards.

Ooh, forgot about the Master System de-make, but I generally tend to avoid those (unless the game is completely different, like Sonic or Castle of Illusion). Yeah, you don't really need the ports. I'm just giving you shit.

Wonder Boy (my latest acquisition) made me realise that 60Hz was the only proper way to play. I had my Master System modded a few month ago and while I acknowledged that 60Hz gaming was better, I took it as a nice bonus: if I didn't have it, I would still enjoy my games. When I booted Wonder Boy for the first time yesterday it sounded just like the Game Gear version I used to play as a kid, the right speed for the game, the right tempo for the music. Then I turned the console back to 50Hz just to check, and I realised how wrong it was. 50 to 60Hz isn't just a nice bonus for us Europeans, It's the way these games were meant to be played, and this is how they should be played. If you don't mod your console to 60Hz, you are playing a crippled version of the game.

Was it the master system 2 that had that secret maze game if you held certain buttons right at the start?

Also had some great memories with the master system....especially

Can't wait to get my FM board in. Should be here in about a week or so. Also swapped my bios with the SMS power boot loader while back. Also something was up with my rgb cable working with my PVM but not my xrgb. Ended up having to run a wire directly from the video encoder c-sync pin to the composite video pin on the av out, but it works perfectly now.

I remember playing a SMS game when I was a tiny baby child that I cannot remember the name of.
All I remember about it is it was a sidescrolling platformer, and it starts with a jungle level.
I think you used a sword to attack enemies.
Anyone know what the hell I'm thinking of?

Dammit, I was waiting for the FM board to get back in stock, guess I was checking the wrong page! Mine was just ordered a few minutes ago, but I know it will be a pain to fit it into my SMS2, too many wires to solder. And even if I manage to do it, I know I'll probably replace my Master System entirely once the FM Enabled Power Base Converter is in production.

Kenseiden, maybe? It was quite common in the early era of the SMS1

I don't think that was it.

Danan the jungle fighter? It even has Jungle in its name!

I never heard of this one before today either.

Wanted to take this opportunity to mention my love of the SMS sound chip. Back in the day, each console had it's own very unique sounding "style" which would stand out compared to the others. As NES unquestionably won the system wars back in those days, most people seem to associate the 8-bit chiptune style with how the NES sounded (which, to be fair, was awesome).

Sadly, SMS (and PCE) seems pretty well forgotten in this regard all these years later. Once in a great while you come across some modern day chip music which sounds derivitave of the SMS but that is pretty rare- please correct me if I am wrong.

My friends, we live in a time of amazing flash carts, the Analogue nt, and now the FM powerbase is on the horizon....

My wallet was not ready for this. Lol

Rastan? The first level isn't really a jungle though. Or Wonder Boy, but you attack with hammers rather a sword. There's also Captain Silver, though you start out in a town and the jungle is one of the later levels.

^yeah i ignored the platformer bit, Wonder Boy's a good call.

also Televators it's not as expensive as you might think! well, i'm hoping this FM chip SMS power base thing pans out too.

Not Wonder Boy or Rastan.
I mean, it might not even be a jungle. It could be a forest. All I remember was it was dark green. :P

FM boards seem to be more expensive than they used to be. $55 AUS so about $50 USD.

Can't wait to check it out though. I also picked up the Master Everdrive about a month back or so.

^hows' the everdrive? i was thinking of just getting the Genesis one that did 32x & SMS too, but i guess that way you can actually use the FM chip more (an english patched JP PS1 would be the way to play!)

Its not bad so far. To be honest I only turned it on to make sure it worked. I was waiting until I got the FM board and rgb cable before I delved in. It also supports sg-1000 games which the everdrive MD doesn't(as far as I know).

Growing up, I had the hang/astro warrior pack. Great console, it's what got me into gaming and Sega. I had:

Hang on/astro warrior
shinobi
alien syndrome
fantasy zone:the maze
my hero
golden axe... (wait, yeah golden axe)
gotcha
space ha... maybe not.

I can't remember. Those may be it right there. Good times. I had a rental store that rented for 2 bucks, good-to-go. If I had an older tv or one of those expensive converters, I would be playing this a lot.
