The Sega master system appreciation thread of SegaScope 3D!

wonderboy1.jpg

I played this in the arcade and then HAD to buy an SMS because I loved it so much. SMS was my first console and I loved it!

Wonderboy 3 (never found 2 in stores)
My Hero
Astro Warrior...

When Sega CD was out, I traded my SMS in one day with 12 games and got Snatcher for my Sega CD. If it was for any other game, I'd say it was the worst decision of my life. But I'm happy I own a copy of Snatcher.

You just made that French seller money by explaining it.

If you really want to help certain people get deals, you can't discuss them openly. That's the sad environment we have come to.

i think somebody will not that u advertised it

:(

[edit] yep, I put my mesage in the e-mail tag so that only registered members can see it. I doubt many will be interested anyway, it's the Master System we are talking about ;) I hope members will have the curtesy of declaring themselves and not bid against each other.

I feel like the guy who bought the Bang & Olufsen TV set from the other thread now, lol

Not too late to edit your post. :)

You have to remember, GAF has millions of lurkers, so anything you post here isn't just for us friendly members.

Have a sms v1 and a modified cart with a zif socket and a epromburner. Was gonna try to make some games on it someday. 3 kids later and still havent yet.. but I love my sms more then any othee console. I played Y's on it.. phantasy star. I finished shinobi on it, dynamite dux! (Most people hate it.. but i loved that game). Wonderboy 3, psycho fox, so many great games on it.

Damn, if you get to it ultimately, I'd be interested in ordering an eeprom or two from you. I don't want to use a professional service from the internet as they would just burn the eeprom and have no way to control it on real hardware.

The Rastan arcade port was one of my favorite Master System action games. It played just like the arcade with the usual graphical downgrade.

Wonder Boy was always like, our bum game. We got Wonder Boy III first and we were so disappointed with the original. I appreciate it more now but when we were kids we thought the repeating music/levels/bosses was just lazy. We used to make our Dad play it through to the end though on the weekends sometimes. I think we found it too frustrating but still wanted to see it being played.

I missed out on so many great games for the SMS. I never knew it had so many games. I was the only kid that owned the system. Everyone I knew had a NES.

I still had a blast playing what little games I had though.

The Ninja .. such great memories of this game. I was addicted for sure.
Rambo.. fun but it got frustratingly hard. I ended up giving up.
Outrun.. everyone knows how great this game was
Safari Hunt.. it came with my system. awesome game

Not sure about top 5 personally, but yeah really great.

Top 5, hmmm lets see:

- Alex Kidd in Miracle World (more nostalgia than actual quality talking for me here)
- Wonderboy 3: The Dragons Trap
- Phantasy Star

Ok, maybe it is indeed top 5 material. There are lots of other good games as well of course, but the ones I have played are mostly in a league togheter with Rastan slightly below those three imo.

A little hard to pick my top 5 - loved practically every game on the system (even the bad ones).

Phantasy Star
Zillion
Wonderboy in Monster Land
The Ninja
Enduro Racer

I loved the SMS, it was my first console.

Top 5 games? Hrm...

Probably:

1) Wonder Boy in Monster World (Wonder Boy 2 I guess?)
2) Zillion.
3) Govelius
4) Miracle Warriors
5) Fantasy Zone 2

There was another game on SMS I played when I was young, I rented it. I don't remember what it was called, but I think you were a guy named Kane. It was part side scroller/part adventure game like Shadowgate/Deja Vu.

I was THIS close to finding a Master system at the flea market. Digging through a box: Adapter? check. Two pads deeper in the box? double check. Ask the guy about the system? He comes back with a Genesis...

1) Wonder Boy in Monster World (Wonder Boy 2 I guess?)
2) Zillion.
3) Govelius
4) Miracle Warriors
5) Fantasy Zone 2

this is an interesting-ass list...i'll cosign Zillion & Golvelius, Wonder Boy i gotta go with part 3. Miracle Warriors over Phantasy Star, though? I dug it, but again, the battery died towards the end so i just gave up. FZ2 though, i never got to play that one, now i really gotta find it!

I never liked Zillion really, but Golvelius is good. I also think Wonder Boy 2 has some pretty terrible design decisions and should be nowhere near the top 5 on the system, but then again, I listed Alex Kidd which uses fucking janken to fight the bosses lol.

I loved Micro Machines, Mortal Kombat, Streets of Rage II, Golvelius, Wonderboy III, Psycho Fox etc.
Even Sonic1 was better on the MasterSystem.

Was really close into completing my collection. But I sold everything a few years ago.

Tectoy games where something special.

Yeah the Sonic-games on SMS is very underrated. Didnt like Psycho Fox though, could never get used to the strange mechanics, and the level design was nothing special imo.

damn, guess i'll try:

Phantasy Star
Golvelius
Rastan
Shinobi
Zillion

Wondery Boy III i dont wanna pose since i havent yet finished it, but it's prolly up there. Spy vs Spy and possibly Golden Axe Warrior (another i need to finish) would rank high as well, i'm sure i'm leaving out some other excellent non-Aztec Adventure choices. wish i could find Master of Darkness & spend more time with that game as well!

SMS had the some of the greatest game artwork of the era. I'm such a fan of their covers with the grid background. Here in Australia the SMS seemed just as popular as the NES if not more so. All of the local video rental stores only rented Master System titles. I used to love going to rent movies with the parents just so that I could look at all the different game boxes on display and imagine playing them

Yeah, as a kid I rarely saw NES games to hire in video stores (or even the local servo which inexplicably had games and movies), it was mostly always Master System. There was something so damn cool and mysterious about its box art.

Relevant! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAzDIhFlpv0

Damn, it's like we lived parallel lives on the opposite side of the globe, I used to do the same in Norway!

my god, that's so crazy to hear. i think if i'dve seen a rental store even carry a single SMS game over here, i may've shat myself. not kidding, it just didn't happen.

1. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
2. Phantasy Star
3. Sonic the Hedgehog
4. Land of Illusion
5. Golden Axe Warrior

6. Master of Darkness
7. Power Strike II
8. Fantasy Zone II
9. R-Type
10. Ninja Gaiden

Such an awesome console.

So hard to come up with top games ...so my favs in no particular order.

Space Harrier - First arcade game I ever beat back in '86 so I HAD to get the SMS version! Obviously its hardly arcade perfect but when I was 12 years old I couldn't care less at the time. Fuck Space Harrier 3D though..choppiest game of all time.

Phantasy Star - C'mon son..an amazing game! Phenomenal graphics. I couldn't believe how smooth the dungeons were.

Wonderboy series - Instead of just one WB game I'll just the whole series in general. I adore them and wish there was a new one on next gen consoles/pc.

Fantasy Zone 1 and 2 - Gorgeous colors and just fun gameplay.

Kenseiden - Nice graphics and fine gameplay.

Golvellius - Still waiting for the sequel!

I have a soft spot for Quartet, Alien Syndrome, Kung Fu Kid, Zillion, Time Soldiers and Penguin Land. Damn I loved the SMS. 80's Sega was my fave Sega. Arcades..SMS..it was all glorious to me.

My first post to the thread ^_^ I'm slowly working up a fairly large Master System library at home, I'll have to share pictures some time! Nobody I knew had a Master System when I was growing up, in fact I didn't find out about it until after I had a Genesis. It gave me a lot of interest in the system, so I decided I would slowly work to collect a full library for it. I'm somewhere in the 70s right now for games, I've slowed down after an initial early rush.

For me top 5 Master System games would have to be

1) Phantasy Star - I really miss traditional Phantasy Star RPG's, and this one really aged well in most regards in my opinion.

2) Psycho Fox - A great platformer that I always have fun playing.

3) Golden Axe Warrior - Sega's take on Zelda, it does some things different that I really enjoy in the game.

4) Bubble Bobble - Very different from the NES version with hidden rooms and such, always have fun playing it.

5) Astro Warrior - I don't know why but I always have fun just mindlessly blasting my way through this game. Such a simple shooter, but so satisfying.

Honorable mention - Snail Maze - I will finish this some day. Some day.

^haha no you wont

damn, Bubble Bobble, Power Strike 2, Ninja Gaiden, so many on here i never had a chance to play in the day. even common stuff like Sonic & Land of Illusion was tough, because before then, TRU - my only local store carrying SMS - had stopped doing such & liquidated what little they did have, a while after finally doing so for Atari, etc. seriously, it felt like there was absolutely no love for my first console - when major magazines covered their games, i'd always read those sections first!

Nobody talks about Kenseiden but it's a great game that gets easier as you learn more abilities. Branching paths, cool moves, great graphics, great controls.

Really underrated. Aside from nobody knowing it exists, I bet it suffers from Kid Icarus syndrome where nobody ever beat the first level and have no idea how deep the game goes later.

Kid Icarus isnt really that great even if you manage to beat it, Kenseiden is much better (imo).

I think it's time for me to show off my collection. This is what I had when I was 10 and what I started with a few months ago:

Cool games, I enjoyed most of them back in the days, apart from Spider Man and Dick Tracy, on which I couldn't pass the first few levels. I took my revenge on Dick Tracy when I recovered my Master System and beat it relatively easily and I can confirm it's a crap game.

Anyway, this is what my collection looks like now:

This is basically my complete collection of subjectively worthwhile Master System games. I do miss two of them, Phantasy Star and Power Strike 2. I'll continue hunting the latter but I won't pay the exorbitant price eBay sellers are asking for it. As for Phantasy Star... Well that's for another post ;)

Thats a nice collection there! I will have to get some pictures taken of mine this weekend and share them, I am pretty proud of how I am coming along ^_^

damn Khaz, sexy as always!
not sure what having/lacking copyright does to em, but what does [BIOS] mean?

Golden Axe Warrior is nearly impossible to find nowadays...

see i still need my Alex Kidd, Fantasy Zone & other games back, but even at like nearly $50 im glad i picked that one back up when i did

"No R", "now there are no limits", etc. Are just insert variations. Some were printed with or without the Registered mark next to the SEGA logo, some with the phrase printed on the back. Websites list them as separate entries because some people are crazy enough to try and collect them all. I just copied my list without thinking, lol.

[BIOS] just means the game is included in the console, it starts when the console is switched on without a cartridge. I must add that this version of Miracle World is the superior version, the buttons are inverted to follow the Super Mario standard, and Alex Kidd eats hamburgers.

I got my Golden Axe Warrior for 35€, what killed it was the 13€ shipping. The game that took me the most time to get was actually Deep Duck Trouble, my latest acquisition. It was on my list since the beginning but I just recently got it CIB for 22€ shipping included, while carts only are often priced even higher.

So don't despair, set up followed searches with daily email alerts from eBay and be patient. That's how I got most of mine :) .

Came across this whilst lurking RetroCollect. Pirate cart with eight games on it (including Sega 'Chese'). I dunno, I just thought this was really cool! I know there were a handful of unlicensed games on the Master System, but I've never seen an actual pirated multi-cart for it before.

Just found all these for a total of $13 at a mall flea market this morning...

I am not actively collecting Master System stuff but a few friends of mine do and they should make for some decent trade bait. ;)

aw man, i played that superior port of Ghostbusters so much, i had over a million in the bank! Vigilante was fun too, and again, Rastan is high up there for me. great haul!

whats the genesis game?
