Yeah, that's a Datsun.

Well, might as well post my car's current status. It's my ongoing project car, in the works since April '09. It's now in the last stretches with only a few more items to finalize:

The white item there is the front section of Spoon's "Mooncraft" hard top in place to measure for the roll cage yet to be built. Side windows molded in courtesy of Bulletproof Automotive.

What's under there? Probably not what you'd expect.

LS2 stroked to 402 ci. Also, here's a view from the rear passenger side wheel well:

That shiny bit is the compressor housing for:

a remotely-mounted Turbonetics T76.

The engine build is capable of quadruple digit horsepower numbers, but the current drivetrain configuration (which includes a T56, Ford 8.8" diff, and custom driveshaft and half shafts from the driveshaft shop) wouldn't last long at that level. I'll have a lot of track prepping to do when the swap is finished, focusing mostly on aero and suspension setup. Should be monstrous yet streetable if I feel inclined to take it out on public roads with a low-boost tune on pump gas before most of the track-readying begins. Otherwise, 750-800whp on race gas with moderate boost is a realistic target for reliability's sake.

Not pictured are the fender flares that are ready to go on the car. The factory quarter panels and fenders will be sliced heavily with the addition of the fender flares to provide lots of tire clearance, so there will be lots of meaty rubber underneath all four corners. Hopefully I'll have the car close to "finished" by the end of the year.

My first new car. :)
Very happy with it.

I'll scrounge up some pics here in a minute.

How quick is the S2000? Is it a 4-cylinder or inline six? Does it run to 60 in the low to mid 6s?
He said he put a stroked chevy ls2 in it so it's a v-8.

I like how the latest generation of the Mustangs look. The rear and tails look much better.

Congrats.

Yeah, I've always been a fan of the First Generation Mustangs, but wasn't impressed with the Fourth Gen.

Fifth Gen. seems to be a nice homage, and my 5.0's 412hp doesn't hurt either.

Really looking forward to Spring weather so I can finally cruise with the top down.

Joke post?

When it was relatively stock, it would pull from 0-60 in just under 6 seconds at the top of 2nd gear. Now, the T56 coupled with 3.55 gears in the rear should have it moving along well beyond 60 mph at the top of 2nd gear.

Taking the weight and power and gear ratios into consideration after the swap, if it hooked up with a good launch at the drag strip (which it won't be doing, but let's be hypothetical), it would easily hit 60 mph in 3-4 seconds.

Come on bro, that doesn't even make sense.

Poindexter, that's what I want after I buy my house.

Not mine, but been driving this during the winter

Took me a while to get used to driving a big SUV, but I love it now. It's freaking unstoppable, goes anywhere and nothing slows it down. I look for snowbanks to drive through/over and find myself turning down backroad paths. And if I spot an open parking lot with ice and snow, I can't help but go nuts.

Awesome conversion. One question though: that LS2 seems heavy compared to the original (I guess it adds 400-500 pounds to a car that is around 2700-2800 pounds originally?) - what are your plans for improving the handling? Or are you aiming purely for drag race performance?

Your guess is way off! :)

When I shipped my F20C and transmission, the total shipping weight was 540 lbs. Minus the pallet and materials, I'd guess the stock engine and transmission weigh around 510 or so together.

A T-56 weighs 140 lbs dry, and an LS2 fully dressed weighs around 450, so that puts us at 590 total. Taking 510 out, putting 590 in, so we're looking at 80 additional pounds from the engine and transmission alone. The Ford differential actually weighs about 5 pounds less than the stock S2000 diff, which was nice to discover, so total drivetrain weight difference is only about 75 pounds, which is a small child passenger for all intents and purposes.

Fast forward to now--the battery has been relocated rearward, and the turbo is also a rear-mount setup. That's a hefty chunk of weight that would otherwise be up front but is now closer to the rear wheels. The intercooler is additional weight, the new radiator is probably heavier than the stock piece judging by size alone (haven't had a chance to weigh either of them), and all of the exhaust and intake plumbing adds up... but hopefully you can see where I'm going with this--it won't be hard to compensate for the weight difference at all. When it's all said and done, I'm hoping to get the car down under 2700 pounds and retain the 50/50 weight distribution.

This car was originally being built to run in the Modified class of Redline Time Attack, but they've now restructured that event to showcase professional teams, so I'll need to find a new series. Built for road courses--no trips down the 1/4 mile for this one.

How much did that cost you? If I die without buying one, I'll have to haunt the earth forever :(
Delorean buying rule of thumb.

10k Delorean equals 15k in parts and free labour
20k Delorean equals 5 k in parts and free labour
25+k Delorean equals 1k in parts and free labour.

Cost me around 9k a year to use as a daily driver and restore at the same time. Easily get that down to 3 or so if its not your only car or you are more mechanically inclined than me.

Meh, I'll bite

I thought about doing this to my miata minus the crazy turbo business. What really makes me think twice about it is the lack of traction control. For what I'd spend getting the LSX in the miata properly I could likely buy a used vette with the traction control intact.

I wouldn't be racing the car, but I have to imagine the torquey v8 would put a miata or S2000 sideways in a hurry, making it kind of less fun to drive than something that minds the p's and q's for you. All of that said, I've only had two "sports cars" and neither of them produced enough torque for me to really get a grasp on the back end getting out from under you when driving aggressively. Is it manageable?

I turn 24 at the end of the month and that means my insurance drops to reasonable prices... I could probably step up to something better now. =P

But I won't. =(

The plan right now is to hold onto it until it's paid off and as soon as that happens I'm giving it to my youngest brother who'll be a senior in high school and probably buy myself an Impreza.

Yeah, you can find yourself sideways in a very big hurry if you aren't careful. I think what frightens/excites me most is the short wheelbase of the S2000. Longer wheelbases typically give you more time to react than shorter wheelbases, as the rear end of the car has to swing around a greater distance to achieve the same slip angle as a shorter wheelbase car. Basically what this means is I have a smaller margin for error before the car exceeds a certain slip angle and surrenders to an uncontrolled slide. It's going to be a very challenging car to drive at the limit. Very challenging.

Luckily, the driver's seat is right in front of the rear tires, so any lateral movement in the rear of the car can be felt instantly. As long as your reactions are quick, measured, and appropriate for the given situation, oversteer will remain manageable. That's the hard part, though--being both fast and accurate with your inputs. Overcorrecting, for instance, will often get you into more trouble than the initial slide you're trying to suppress.

The fact that it's turbocharged adds another layer of challenge due to the less consistent/predictable throttle response compared to a naturally aspirated setup. Unless I plan on dying in it, I'll have to give this car my utmost attention and respect at all times. Can't wait.

Honestly, the 3G TL is one of the sexiest cars ever.. the lines are so clean, and so classic. Its a timeless design that will hold up in 20 years. The newer ones scare me, no really.. lol.

So I have the stock GPS upgrade on mine but I'd LOVE to get some fogs done. Does doing so require a new front bumper or fascia to accomidate space? I would not want to 'mod' my stock bumper to make room, I'm all about clean look.

LED interior sounds extremely hot, do you have any pics?

Here you go dude.

I love how the courtesy lights light up the ground :)
The camera exposure makes it seem like they're super bright but they're not. Very tasteful and not boy racer at all. It's a cheap mod. You'll love it.

Again, I have LEDs in my license plate lights too. I didn't take pics of those but they look exactly like how the newer Lexus vehicles look.

Niiiice man! Off-Road Vehicles are really fun to drive.

I have a Nissan Terrano II (the longest one), but I can't find an appropriate pic on the internet.. maybe I'll take some photos tomorrow.

But also, 8km per lt.
And driving in Milan. And parking, in Milan. Oh god I hate it.

No offense, but it feels almost bizarre having to answer this to someone :P

Thanks Pterion and Lord Error..

Yea, I live in a semi-poor area in Pennsylvania. But the car is extremely nice.

I downgraded from an AW11 MR2 to a B13 SE-R a couple years ago in an attempt to act more like an adult.

I still question whether I made the right decision. :|
