The Spoony Experiment

It's funny, FF VIII is my favorite game of all time. FF X was my favorite PS2 game. And FF XIII is my favorite game this gen. lol Spoony sure hates my beloveds. Well, so does most of GAF so whatever. Doubt I will be watching the XIII review though. His other FF reviews were rather obnoxious. Doubt this one will be any different.

I think my favorite reviews he does are when him and Miles review films. Wish they did more of those.
 
Yeah, I just want to hear Spoony ranting about stuff in a genuine fashion. That Dreamcast Ring game was a good return to form.

I enjoyed it. It is not Hamauzu's best soundtrack by far, though. He's done better work.

I'll take CM's over a review 7 times a week, and twice on Sunday. I'd rather here some (semi-)organic stories about D&D instead of just another scripted, "this game sucks" review. I don't know if it's because I've never played D&D, but the stories are always so fascinating to me.

What about the stuff before? Did you watch the VLOG? Did he kind of ruin all of the major plot points or what? I like the stuff he mentioned. I've never been one for fantasy, but after wetting my beak with Game of Thrones, I want to get deeper in the genre.

I'm watching it now... I always liked the first six books a lot. (War or the Lance and Time of the Twins.) There're not super heavy stuff, but they're entertaining and they do have that heart Spoony was talking about.

Everything else methodically works to crap on what the first six books built up tho. Someone else described them as Ultimatum for Dragonlance, and that pretty much sums them up.

*edit* Spoony can't spoil DL because he can't remember squat about it. ;)

Don't read any of them. They are by and large novel mill shlock. You can probably find some better recommendations if you go look through some of the recommendation threads listed here.

Not sure what you mean? The fantasy recommendation threads typically have some decent recommendations, although surely not everything I would consider great fantasy.

Most of them instantly dismiss anything that has Tolkien elements in it (Like say elves and trees) in it as mill driven fantasy schlock regardless of the book's content.
 
Where is the FF13 review? he has been promising it for weeks. Now i like Spoony, but his lazy approach will forever mean he wont get any further than making a couple of videos a month from his brothers basement.

Does he have a main job? or is this it?

He was almost finished with FFXIII (part 1 was supposed to be out weeks ago) but after it came to his knowledge that people liked the games soundtrack he stopped working on it. Apparently big part of the script was him bashing the OST wich he found bad and forgettable and he now thinks he needs to rewrite the script. I don't think he has done much work on it tho so who knows when we see the review.

As far as I know the website is his only job.

I never got that impression. I thought he was just so pissed that he stopped working on it all together for the time being. Could be wrong though.

Either way, fuck that I'll take VLOGs and Counter Monkeys over "reviews" any day of the week.

He rarely does that and is especially unmoveable in his criticism for Zelda for example and his fanbase does not agree at all. However XIII is perhaps the most requested review he has (way more so than X for example witch people actually mostly like. ) so I guess he doesn't want to let fans down. I don't think he changes his opinion but if the review is riding on bashing an element people like I can kinda see why he would want to change the script. IMO he should have just released part 1 as it was ofc.
 
I love Spoony's reviews but he NEVER DOES THEM ANYMORE. Its so frustrating, every time I look at his website there is only whatever those "Counter Monkey" videos are.
 
I can't follow the CM stuff, honestly gives me a headache and I keep losing track about what on earth he is talking about since it's very impromptu and unedited. Like following the ravings of a rambling mad man.

I thought that the issue with the FFXIII music was that he kept on ragging about how forgettable it was in the review, but then realized that if he could spend so much time on it, then it contradicts the entire point of it being forgettable?

Wouldn't reviewing something as forgettable and boring as FF XIII be harder to do, since there's a dearth of interesting content to note or mock?

Had to chuckle at the small snippet where he had a laugh at FF14. And oh god he has the LE of FF13-2.

Edit: And talking about how fucking stupid the lack of positioning in this game is. Thank you. And I completely forgot about Lightning's AMP shit being completely forgotten after the prologue until the end, but sometimes I feel like those two bits were written at the same time. Truly, the game kind of feels inconsistent, and Chapter 11 is the best showcase of this.

It's like we've gotten to the point where we know the new movies/games are going to be shit, and we just want reviews of them from Spoony or Plinkett.
