The Spoony Experiment

Dear lord, it's far worse than anything I ever imagined.
I was shocked at the intro part, but now I understand why.

I'm glad he went on a rant there about some of the art design. That is easily the most repulsive thing about the game to me, never having played it.

I know absolutely nothing about the story or characters, so I am fearful of what lies ahead, if this is the start to it all.

Great review...The man has clearly been watching Plinkett videos but thats no bad thing.

Yeah nothing wrong here, Mr. Plinkett do it right criticism wise and give meaty reviews fill of solid points and nice information.

I prefer internet reviewers copying Mr. Plinkett over copying the angry Nintendo nerd or Nostalgia Critic.

FF-XIII up, haven't watched yet

Holy shit. This is my first time watching a Spoony review. And that was so incredibly stupid. If you apply the same types of questions to ANY game, the game would not hold up. There are some things in video games that just really don't hold up in reality, because, it's... a video game. I get that FFXIII probably wasn't a very good game, but the things he talks about are so trivial in the grand scheme of things, it makes me think that anyone that complains about the game is incredibly overreacting.

I dunno. His complaints about not being able to position your party members because they're doing something outrageously stupid, especially when it would clearly help when you're trying to avoid AoE attacks with your other party members in the case that a Defender is trying to aggro are certainly valid.

*shrug* I thought it was funny.

I thought it was great. While he did get a bit OCD at the end, considering the entire story is told in cut scenes and art direction, small fuck ups can add up.

There's a difference between expecting your audience to suspend their disbelief and just not caring about the rules of your own universe.

He acknowledged that when talking about the whole punching a robot thing by bringing up the suplexing a train stuff in a past final fantasy. His issues seemed less about improbability and more about not laying a proper foundation/context for explaining why things are or making choices that go against proper logic in the established setting.

Certainly, there are some exceptions, but I felt the majority of what he talked about made sense, especially in regards to the art design. Final Fantasy's art design has felt far too focused on drowning their designs in decoration rather than something that is iconic or aesthetically pleasing/consistent. That's not to say that overload of detail can't be handled properly (see a lot of FF12), but their art department has consistently made me avoid their games more than anything else.

I think the whole idea is that your world and setting just has to make sense. He even said as such when he plainly acknowledged that FF8, for as much as he disliked the game, at least made sense and was easy to follow.

And although not stated plainly, there's an undercurrent in his criticism about how the game's setting is completely undermined by the utilitarian game mechanics in place. Why do save points anywhere let you buy anything? Because the game has to be this way for it to work! And that's not even a bad thing in and of itself, but the game's ridiculous linearity, lack of towns, and lack of anything resembling exploration is one of the biggest criticisms the game has received from day one, and the save point thing is symptomatic of a much larger problem.

Also it's a comedy video and hyperbole is part of the whole deal.

Alright, alright... Just when he was asking the question of "What do these save stations do in the actual game world?" it just felt so far apart from what is actually wrong with the game. There are save station type things that exist in SO many games which don't exactly make any sense when considered from an in-game perspective, but that doesn't make the game bad. The incredibly heavy focus on linearity is a much better criticism, but approaching that through the save-point system seems like a round-a-bout way of doing it.

EDIT: But after finishing the video, he does, as you guys say, admit his OCD habits. And that makes it better.

It's okay, kvothe. Spoony definitely has problems with being overly nit-picky on certain things, but it is nice when he admits it. : P

If it really is your first time watching some of his videos, I highly recommend his Phantasmagoria videos and Ripper videos. Easily my favorite of his.
They're just him playing through and having a good time riffing on some classic FMV titles.

Spoony's Let's Play Phantasmagoria 2 is still one of my favorite things to come from the entertainment; right up there with the Plinkett Reviews.

Wow he ripped FFXIII apart and he is still in the prologue lol! I was in such a zoned out state while playing through that game that I barely remember any of it.

I'd hate Final Fantasy XIII more if I could actually remember any of it. I spent 50 or so hours in that world and I took absolutely nothing from it. It's such an awful game but in the most subtle, understated way possible. On the surface it looks gorgeous, the graphics are sublime, the art is interesting and diverse, but there's no direction whatsoever, it's just a bunch of random ideas thrown together with no hand to guide it into a cohesive, singular vision.

I think Spoony did a good job in illustrating just how nonsensical that whole universe is by deliberately getting hung up on seemingly inconsequential minor details; for it's in those details that the better directors/writers craft a believable, realistic world. What kind of writer thinks it's a good idea to throw the player into a sci-fi orientated world without attempting to ground them by using the myriad of narrative devices at their disposal. The intro to Final Fantasy XIII is one hell of a lesson in how to do everything wrong. At least with Final Fantasy X, Tidus was a substitute for the audience, questioning the world at every opportunity, asking the exact questions the played would be.

This is something you could do in FFXII.... yet he still complains about it.

FFXII had the BEST combat system in all of the FF series including things like positional awareness but everyone hates it.

Don't people hate it because of the Gambit system? "It plays itself", yadda yadda.

FFXIII is way worse in that regard yet people claim its combat system is better.

It is just about expectations... they broke with the outdated turn system that only exists because game systems in the 80s had like half a kylobyte of memory.

I tend to think X-2 and XII's battle systems are the best in the series. XIII seemed like an inferior version of X-2, it also made the damage numbers meaningless in that they just flashed up in a pointless blur.

The damage numbers were ok to see while in limit break mode, just because they got absurdly big, but otherwise I agree with you, just spam.

It doesn't have to play itself though, which is the absurdity of that complaint. It is great because you can exert as much or as little direct control as you desire. Unless I am sorely misremembering it.

Just the one part for now. The bad news is that his updates can be quite sporadic, and that's probably putting it mildly. In the meantime, his Final Fantasy 8 videos are pretty funny, so it's worth checking them out.

Just a heads up, one of his FF8 videos is absolutely NSFW.

Ok I gave it a shot and watched FF13 part 1 - I liked it. We shall see about the rest.
EDIT: there is just part 1 of FF13?
If you're looking for more Final Fantasy related content, I'd suggest watching his FF8 and FF10 reviews. If you just want to see some solid content from him, check out the Phantasmagoria and Ripper stuff I linked just earlier in the thread!

The FF13 stuff just got kicked off, so it will be a little bit before the next video is up. Most likely, he has the footage of the game itself take care of, and it's just a matter of sorting out his scripts/shooting/editing anything he needs to. Typically, once he gets going on a review, it isn't too long before he gets it finished.
