The Spoony Experiment

As someone who suffered from depression I know how difficult it can be, but I asked for help and made a conscious effort to get better and move on. At it's peak I was taking 3 different pills and seeing 2 different counselors (psychiatrist and counselor), and before people freak out both counselors knew and prescribed the 3 meds I was taking. It took me almost 2 years to really get my head back on straight, and even longer to mend many of the bridges I burned during that time.

As a fan I just hope we see him finish his Ultima 9 review, could be his swan song video if he is forced to retire.
 
So, I just went to his site and checked out the dates on some of his videos. Phantasmagoria was posted 2008, and the final fantasy viii review started 2007, had a two-year absence, and he quickly wrapped it up without finishing the game 2009. Three years since his last good stuff.

What I was thinking as well, but really, I wonder how much business TGWTG would love it had been peak-Spoony? I wonder if they would have made the same decision?

Personally I found the Ultima reviews to be good stuff.
 
I always thought his best stuff was when he did the vlogs where he just talked in front of the camera about stuff. Even watching him unbox and talk about table top games that I normally have no interest in was entertaining. Most of the stuff where he plays various characters and acts overly bombastic I found to be annoying.
 
Yeah this is pretty depressing.

I hate to learn about the actual lives of these people...

Hope he gets it together as he can be pretty funny and make great videos..

I mean, I won't lie, I'm a huge fan of his stuff. I remember I loved the Final Fantasy retrospective on Gametrailers, so I searched for similar things on Youtube, and found this little review of Final Fantasy VIII that introduced me to his stuff and had me hooked.

His Final Fantasy reviews are must-watches, as is the legendary playthroughs of Phantasmagoria (which I still feel is the best Let's Play I've ever watched) and Ripper. As of late, his Counter Monkey videos and Ultima retrospective are both really great. I love watching his VLOG's about random stuff....I don't know, I just really like hearing the guy talk about stuff, he just always has an opinion and sticks to it.

It's a shame that depression has hit him this hard. Not only with these outlandish tweets, which seem to be out of line even for his sense of humor and style, but also just the lack of content he's put out. I'm not sure how the people at TGWTG got paid, but I'm curious if Spoony managed to stay afloat just because of how huge of a fanbase he has. Either way, it's sad to see this happen, and hope he makes it out the other side okay.

Someone can correct me if I"m wrong but I'm pretty sure most of them are paid the same way anyone with a blip account is paid though ad revenue

I think at this point he's reveling in the flames and destruction.

I don't know. He doesn't seem like he was all too happy at CA. His vid output has also dramatically lowered in content and quality in my opinion, I don't think he's that much "into" it anymore.

yea, i think his last great video was FFX-2 Part 3. i don't watch any of the Counter-Monkey vids he keeps pumping out.

I just hope this help "improving" TGWTG,with droping Spoony (one of their big guys) they will need to do something ( their views were in huge decline and this 4th Anniversary movie was their last one they will not do them anymore according to Doug Walker, so that mean so they have money issues), they need to change many thing, from how their people act, and what they put in videos, they need to hire new blood and not just "bad old movies reviews" with "angry attitude", hire guys who made good comedy skits, animated/flash people and other interesting things like.

That's basically it, they also would help pay to fly people out for their anniversary videos and I think there are incentives for the amount of traffic your videos get on their site. I'm sure someone else knows better and can clarify but that's what I recall hearing about in someone's vlog a long time ago.

I remember reading Linkara mention in one of the videos comments saying the money made from ads has declined a lot even though views count remained steady. I really do wonder about the site's financial stability right now.

i think i only like 5 guys on TGWTG. the rest is really filler stuff and not that well produced.

yup, they have so many guys in there who produce little to nothing or just plain bad shit. they should redesign the site and cut the fat. i don't even check TGWTG site anymore. i go straight to the Blip pages since they have vids not in the main site.

They have hired some interesting new people but since their roster is bloated as fuck they do not really get the attention.

Yeah, I honestly can't say the last time I've actually watched a non-Spoony TGWTG video. I just don't find the videos all that funny anymore, not that they were even amazingly funny to begin with. Even when I see a new Spoony review, I remember "Oh, nice a new review! Hopefully there isn't a lot of acting or "story-line" in it." Spoony's best stuff is the non-scripted, or at least lightly directed stuff. Look at how funny the beginning of the FF XIII review is comparing to the end. Night and day. I just hate how there seems to be a real person, and then a "character." The character is always predictable, awkwardly done, and just boring, for every person on TGWTG. Real is better.

Depression obviously had a hand in it, but I'm saying even taking depression out of the equation he seemed to naturally thin out his content output, like he was getting simply bored of the whole thing.

I guess when he got all that early praise and some web awards, it went to his head super hard. I really saw the end when he had that huge fight with the publisher who put out Deadliest Warrior, then ranting and raving against anyone who disagreed with his really whacky E3 predictions from like two years ago.

i remember after he moved in to the new place with his bro, he wanted to do so much stuff with green screen and editing effects. i don't think he ever got anything done. kinda sad what's going on with him.

he's still cool with Angry Joe and JewWario tho at least.

I feel that's the problem with trying to do comedic reviews, especially of older content. Generally you have that those few great ideas that you want to tear a new one (NC: Godzilla, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat. Spoony: FF8, Yor, Bayou Billy. AVGN: TMNT, Simon's Quest, Jekyll and Hyde) and have really funny commentary for, but then you make it big and have to produce a video every week/biweekly/monthly and your quality noticeably drops. AVGN burned out and had to slow down his production, NC continues to pick really bland films to review, Spoony had his break down, and the list goes on.

TGWTG guys (and his brother) really tried too much with him since last year after his ex girlfriend thing, many of them supported him, went to his place, give him tickets to their towns (so he can feel better),all were cheering him 24/7,TGWTG let him go to europe,E3,,ect,but it seems like (just a guess guess) that he didn't get past his depression about his ex yet.

That's what depression is though. It makes you completely bored and nearly indifferent to the things you used to love and the people around you. You can't take depression out of the equation because it's the biggest variable most likely.

This is all true. I'd have to say I really enjoy AVGN's stuff still, and the biggest reason why production is at a stand-still is because he's making a movie out of it. Even with that though, you can tell he's kind of tired of this. He's a movie-lover first, but AVGN just blew up too big to just ignore it or stop. Everybody has to pay the bills. Even with that, he still seems to enjoy it, but I always feel like he's tired of doing it; like he'd rather be making movies like he used to. Who knows though, I don't know him, I could be completely wrong.

Angry Joe isn't really reviewing old games/movies though like the others, reviewers like him and Yahtzee focus on brand new games/movies which I think is a much easier task to undertake. With reviewing games as they come out, it's not really about "will this game make a good/funny review" it's "this is the new big game and my fans want to hear my opinion on it". I guess it's two styles, "classic" reviewers (NC, Spoony, AVGN) and "modern" reviewers (Yahtzee, AJ, BtS).

For those classic reviewers it's all about the jokes and entertaining the audience often at the expense of the game/movie/etc. Modern reviewers have the advantage that upcoming/new games/movies people are more likely to click and watch simply because they're interested in that title, and if it's a title they've missed they might click to see what the fuss is about. Classic reviewers by contrast have to hook the audience with their humor or they lose clicks/views, people are less likely to click whatever random "nostalgic" movie the NC is reviewing this week if they didn't find his past few films funny and the movie of the week is something they've never heard of.
 
It's textbook bottom of the barrel depressive state- if he's on medication to help him at all he's stopped taking it and stopped taking it recently I might add. My best friend is bi-polar and when he gets into a depressive episode, especially combined with alcohol (something that people with depression should never drink) , shitty , awful things occur.

Not all people on this board or elsewhere on the internet are quite familiar with the term "sociopath" but that's pretty much what's going on here, he feels he's already at the bottom and things literally can't get any worse then they are as well as feeling like absolutely no one gives 2 shits about anything he does. Therefore, the logical endpoint is to burn bridges and burn all of them because no one cares and everyone is out to get you anyway.

All this poor man has is his dog and his web series, he never leaves his house and rarely communicates with people outside of the internet , this is a horrible way to live for anyone but for someone who is that far down in the dumps it's 100 times worse.

It's sad to see it unfold with this much publicity because when it comes down to it he's going to have to pick himself up and fix everything and it won't matter who supports him and who doesn't because in his mind right now , no one gives a shit and if they do it doesn't matter because they aren't on "his side" anyway.

True. I guess the next guy that comes close is JewWario altho his stuff can be hit or miss. I really hate when he has guest reviewers on. They suck.

I guess you're right. I tried to consider maybe the possibility that he was naturally reaching a "move on to something else after so many years" point, but this is probably fueled largely by depression and not the former.

Use to watch AVGN and TGWTG but not anymore. I still watch and enjoy Spoony’s stuff and will continue to do so. His current ravings may have lost him some of his fans but it’s also probably made people who previously didn’t know about him curious. Will be interesting to see what his next video is.

Also his sites forums are down, due to moving to a new server. If they reopen can't wait to see the shitstorm that happens there.

Umm a sociopath is someone with anti social personality disorder. Spoony is doing depressive based things like self destructing, bridge burning and isolating himself. He isnt suffering from a lack of conscience and murdering/injuring people or dissecting house pets
