The Spoony Experiment

I don't want to play internet doctor, but if you think sociopath=murderer, then you are mistaken (rightly so, since so many people incorrectly synonymize the two terms).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociopath

  • Callous unconcern for the feelings of others.
    Gross and persistent attitude of irresponsibility and disregard for social norms, rules, and obligations.
    Incapacity to maintain enduring relationships, though having no difficulty in establishing them.
    Very low tolerance to frustration and a low threshold for discharge of aggression, including violence.
    Incapacity to experience guilt or to profit from experience, particularly punishment.
    Markedly prone to blame others or to offer plausible rationalizations for the behavior that has brought the person into conflict with society.

  • A) There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three or more of the following:
    failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest;
    deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure;
    impulsiveness or failure to plan ahead;
    irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults;
    reckless disregard for safety of self or others;
    consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations;
    lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another;
    B) The individual is at least age 18 years.
    C) There is evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15 years.
    D) The occurrence of antisocial behavior is not exclusively during the course of schizophrenia or a manic episode.

Thanks I should've subbed to Pat and HVGN a long time ago.

And thanks for letting me discover Clan of the Gray Wold. They seem awesome (i'm a sucker for 8-16 bit gaming)

Go watch the Earthbound retrospective. Trust me, you'll love it.

Only heard of Pat but haven't watched any of their videos. I guess I will check them out especially now that I have already rewatched all of AVGN videos last month.

Seen HVGN and Pat. They're good but not outrageously funny. I like them for the info more than humor. Never saw Gray Wolf.

Like I said, go watch their retrospective of Earthbound. I promise that you will become a fan. Report back after doing so! I'm curious to see how fans of the game see it.

Just got out of a stream with multiple TGWTG members discussing this. They were all saddened but felt it was the right thing to do, and were rather stunned that it eventually came to this. Especially when Spoony was one of the first people on the site and when they met him he was a really nice guy.

I don't see the site getting any worse off, Spoony barely uploaded content there to begin with and they still did fine.

Since we're discussing other good reviewers, I recommend SFDebris. He talks about individual episodes of Star Trek, Doctor Who and other science fiction/fantasy. He was the one that inspired Linkara to do History of Power Rangers. http://sfdebris.com/

Chuck is good people, I also recommend his stuff.

Thanks, I'll give him a watch.

Also, I'm sure Spoony was a really nice guy, but that's what depression does to you. It eats at you until you just don't give a shit about anything anymore.

Tl;Dr version:

1. Spoony makes a rape joke about a female member in the, uh, "that guy" crew

2. People start telling him that's not cool.

3. He flips shit and starts hurling insults at people (including the person who he made said joke at) for "not being able to take a joke"

4. TGWTG suspends him for 4 weeks so he can get his shit together

5. Starts making a bunch of really depressing tweets about how he's as good as hitler, and needs to be punished, and lower than shit, etc, etc

6. Finally snaps today and starts throwing how insults at anyone and everyone who sends him a tweet, including stuff like calling another female "that guy" staff member "ignorant" and a, um, bad word for a female that's slang for genitalia (starts with a c)

7. Spoony's let go from that guy and co

8. Now he's on twitter saying loads of narcissistic crap like he's a "god" and stuff

Dude needs help, seriously....
Thanks, WOW seriously that is not cool man! :O:O I love TGWTG stuff and spoony this is really FUCKED UP! :O.

Ummm I said and. Obviously I'm not saying murderers are all sociopaths. Lots of serial killers are sociopaths though. Happy?

Either way, Noah isnt suffering from sociopathy. Its not something you just turn on one day. Personality disorders are generally developed early in life. Its a horrible misuse of the term.

Too late, watching Gray Wolf's Rise of the RPG and it's fantastic so far. Thanks for linking him. Subscribed. :)

Too bad Spoony went crazy, I really enjoyed some of his reviews.

I'm still hoping he does a lets play of the SWAT 4 expansion pack some day.

This x1000000

Clan of the grey wolf / 16 bit gems is what all Internet reviewers should try to Imitate. Enough with the angry, know-it-all, entitled, unfunny pricks :/

Daaaaamnn, I remember when Spoony was just starting out as a critic - posting text reviews on the KenzerCo Roleplaying Games Forums, before they offered huim a column in their monthly publication Knights of the Dinner Table. I always did suspect he might be bi-polar. Didn't much care for his column, but the chap was never unpleasant to converse with - back in 2003-5(ish).

He closed his account in a fit of pique one day, and there was a bit of a scandal over his republishing his material on his own site after selling the rights to KCo... and that was him. Shame to see history repeating itslef (in a general manner)

Sorry, I seem to be out of the loop a little:

Doug got married? When? to who?
Also who is Maffew?

Anyway, yeah this is sad to watch, but in a lot of ways it's not surprising anymore from him..

I really liked Spoony and his videos. Really sad that it had to end this way.

I hope he can get his life back on track somehow. However he has to stop acting like an ass, damn.

The Clan of the Gray Wolf videos are great. If you have the time his series on Earthbound is fantastic.

If memory serves me right he actually owns one of the Earthbound NES prototypes.

It wasn't recorded... that's a shame.

Doug got married last Friday, she's never actually shown up in a video (except for her voice in one of them).

Maffew is the creator of Botchamania, a video compilation series (over 200 episodes) showcasing pro wrestling botches, bloopers, and just plain weirdness. http://botchamania.com/

I know first hand how much depression can destepy, but Twitter is just a bad idea in general. Time and time again people go on there and say fucking garbage that they should keep to themselves. I do enjoy his videos for the most part so hopefully he can get it together.

Spoony got me into AVGN because he mentioned his name in one of his first game reviews. His FF8 review made me laugh harder than anything in many many years, and it's sad but I can almost recite the dialogue back because I've watched all the parts so many times.

His Let's Play of Phantasmagoria 2 is very good, except for the first part. It almost seems like the first part was freestyled, and the rest were written in because his jokes become a lot quippier and funnier.

His Ultima retrospective is just so awesome...I really hope he does UO, but I have a feeling he didn't play it.

His SWAT videos are classic too.

I'm not a big fan of TGWTG in general but it's important that they supported him. Sad to see it go down like this, on twitter of all places. He was really melting down a couple hours ago but hopefully he's sobered up.

And he help the Cinema Snob a lot when Youtube took all his videos down, seems like Spoony doesn't have the temperament to be a good freelancer, keeping his shit in check isn't his strong point.

That sucks. Anything that delays his videos makes me sad =(

Is there a way I can see the video or quote of what he actually said?

Yeah... You're using the wrong term. The fact you can post the wiki definition that doesn't match up with Spoony's issues at all doesn't help your case.

It seems kind of weird that they would all get so upset over that basement joke, lots of those guys are pretty foul mouthed a lot of the time and occasionally demeaning to women. It seems kinda opportunistic that they would react like that...like they were waiting for an excuse.

But I haven't really enjoyed Spoony too much since FF8/Pumpkinhead. Actually, his downward spiral has been pretty obvious just watching the occasional new video here and there. He just doesn't care anymore. I can't really pity him because he gives off such a forced air of superiority, like he's got his little group of loyal fans who will eat up anything he puts out and tell him he's the greatest, so he really doesn't need to try too hard and anyone who has an issue with him or anything he's said, or even has some constructive criticism is a total moron who deserves his petulant scorn and fury (anyone who's spent any time on his boards knows that this insane "I am a God" ranting on twitter is nothing new...)

But at least Spoony has made me laugh a bunch of times. Can't say that about that nerdy douche Doug Walker. Fuck Doug Walker.

Curious to see how this would have gone down, just in terms of fan support, if this was Spoony at the top of his game, back when he was doing the Let's Play's and FF reviews. I mean, it still should be interesting now to see how he does, as I'm sure he'll be fine, but it's definitely not going to be easy.

He wasn't on top of his game during his FF8 reviews either. He stopped for like 2 years because his fans just kept saying "finish the ff8 review" when he was bored with it and wanted to move on, so he said fuck his fans and just didn't do it anymore. He went through a whole meltdown over this too where he told his fans to fuck off. Then after his Phantasmagoria Let's Play, he put in the clip at the end of the video where he teases that he's going to be finishing the FF8 review. Something isn't mentally straight with him, but he is very funny, has a substantial knowlegde of pop culture, and is a good writer and makes very good videos. I guess all good artists are crazy though.

Yeah, it's really interesting hearing how the Dragon Quest team got together. I never knew how much of its was from Yuji Horii's ties to the manga industry.

Shame to hear about about Spoony though. I never really followed him regularly, but I always enjoyed his game reviews, and his Ultima retrospective is hilarious.

While he made insensitive comments to several co-workers, Spoony was becoming a liability on the website. He was let go because the strength of his following didn't overcome his various problems.

Here are the main points:
- He was belligerent on Twitter for a long time and attracting bad press.
- At E3 2011, he made a huge scene over the X-COM FPS. This resulted in the website and any associated members being blacklisted from several companies during gaming events, such as GDC and various gaming expos.
- His productivity was way down. He refused help from his friends/co-workers in getting better and back to work.

Essentially, he was costing the business money and not bringing enough in. I think his recent comments accelerated the inevitable if anything.

Ahh, makes a lot more sense now. Could you give me a quick summary of the xcom "huge scene" or link me to a video or something?

iirc, he had a falling out with LordKat at E3 last year or 2010. He kept trollin' Kat during his interviews and Kat got pissed and called him names. I happened to hear Spoony talk about it during one of his XCOM live streams.

They raelly need to dump a lot of reviewers from the site, it's far too bloated with dozens and dozens of contributors.

Spoony was one of the very bet guys, but he's been unstable for years now. I hope he gets back on his feet, but it seems like it's going to be a very long road to recovery for him, at the very least.

Came here expecting a great video from Spoony.
Uh, didn't quite get that.
Hope he gets back on his feet. Kinda makes me rethink what was an act and what wasn't.

It's funny though, he really was saying what was on everyone's mind

Yeah I remember that, but I don't think it's fair to blacklist them when it's only Angry Joe who does the video game coverage and interviews, not Spoony. Spoony doesn't represent the views of Channel Awesome yadda yadda. Spoony was apologetic about it anytime afterwards.

Plus, made for a hilarious meme, the XCOM Enemy Unknown team are well aware of that public outcry :P

Yeah besides the grating, whiny manchildish tone, the stomping tantrum, and assuming that he spent a decent amount of time with a playable demo of the game, I don't really see what the big deal is. In fact I give him respect for having the balls to not be just another "Wow so glad to be at E3 guys! All your games look great!" pandering sycophant like most everybody else.

But the infantile manner he chose to communicate that sentiment negates all of said respect.
