The Spoony Experiment

Does anyone else get the feeling that Lordkat seems a bit bitter towards Spoony? Maybe because Spoony reached way more people than LK ever did? I mean, this is all speculation, but I guess all bets are off after the dude basically comes out and says he hopes Spoony commits suicide. I mean, come on, I understand you don't like the dude, or are pissed at him, but holy fuck.

His rant videos when this all broke out are fucking nuts.

"I fuckin hate you"
"You sicken me"
"I hate you"
"I really despise you"

Repeated ad nauseum for several minutes.

Wait, are these different then his one video that was linked earlier in this topic? I swear he says in that video that after said video, he will never talk about Spoony again.

I've only seen the one...are there more?

But really I think you're correct, seems very bitter all in all and to be fair its down to his own content that he isn't (or wasn't) as popular as Spoony is (or was).

I used to go on TGWTG daily and when he was there his videos got just as much exposure as others and if it didn't take off that's down to him.

I don't think NC is as good as he was and for me the only consistent contributors (that I watch) are Brad and Linkara.

I will say while it by no means makes his melt-down and everything leading up to it a-okay, Spoony officially being diagnosed with bipolar disorder is at least an actual explanation for his actions than depression, which didn't seem to explain his similar behavior issues starting back in '09 when depression was never brought up at all. It's just irritating, especially when you've had friends before (some who were originally out there, loud and rude types) who suffer from it who wound up acting absolutely nothing like how Spoony did.

Yeah I agree, I went through depression myself like and while it has different effects on people in general, you don't go through wild swings and fits of rage like Spoony has done. I wasn't overly convinced with people chalking it down to depression either (mainly due to my own experiences) but hopefully now following the diagnosis the dude can get on track and turn things around. Some time away from the net will do him some good.

It's like there's nothing you can really do, but you still just witness it as it happens. I wonder if making videos even makes him happy anymore? I mean, you can just tell in his older stuff, the guy has a clear joy for making jokes and talking about nerdy stuff; the fans can definitely tell, as that's why he blew up and got so big. I really hope he still has that love, but if he doesn't maybe he should consider giving it up if it's hurting his life, or maybe just take an official break away from it for a while.

Yeah, that LordKat quote speaks more to his obvious rage issues than anything else. I also think the effect that Spoony and Angry Joe's "unprofessionalism" had on him is grossly over-exaggerated; it would seem they didn't have a problem at this years e3 when it came to interviews. I'd never listened to LordKat's stuff prior to his Spoonywatch 2012 stream and whilst he is an interesting personality, I just can't abide his tendency to go into full on super rage mode.

I've never really watched any of Brad Jone's material, but I get the impression that he's the most well rounded personality within that whole group.

Brad Jones is basically the only well adjusted person of the "big" reviewers on TGWTG. He's always comes across as calm and content.

Linkara seems clever but a little neurotic, Doug Walker seems very nice but nervous/insecure in any videos of him in larger social situations, Nostalgia Chick is nuts, and Spoony...yeah.

Rob Walker isn't a reviewer there, but he also seems normal and free of issues.

Now I really shouldn't be judging people's whole personality's from just internet videos and vlogs, but it's all I have to go on.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. Brad Jones basically seems like a really super-cool guy, and I think that's because he really loves what he does, and he does quite a few different things as well. Plus, you don't really see him have to cling-on to the usual TGWTG stuff, like having unnecessary crossovers or whatever. Also, he really doesn't seem like a huge attention-needing guy; nearly all of his non-Cinema Snob videos usually involve a bunch of his friends and wife, which goes to show that the guy doesn't need to be constantly hearing his voice like some other people.

I absolutely love Brad Tries but especially the Thanksgiving and Christmas ones where they all try the different sodas.

Honestly, not to talk shit on the dude, but I really don't care for the Cinema Snob stuff, but I absolutely freaking love all his other stuff, especially Brad tries. I love his views and personality, not the Cinema Snob persona; talking about movies and stuff, especially when it's with his friends right after they get out of the theater, that's his best stuff.

Pretty much wanted to say the SAME exact thing. These guys have made their living making fun of stuff other people have created, yet they create what is arguably some of the worst looking dog shit. That trailer was seriously just faces looking around concerned.

What really genuinely amazes me is that there is a market out there for this shit that actually keeps these people employed to where this sort of thing isn't a hobby, it's a career. That is honestly the thing I just can't wrap my head around.
I just wandered into this thread out of boredom and I have to say I have no idea who the hell half of these people are until I read the previous 5 or so pages and the OP (yes im a 50 posts per page viewer go fuck yourself).

Does it ever feel like for someone that videogames as a hobby is in reality disconnected so far from your preconceptions of what people are like in videogaming in comparison to yourself? Because I enjoy reading about community meltdowns of people that have followers for some reason on a product they produce or the chaos they cause and yet I walk into this event and it really baffles me. For how I look and for the hobby I follow I feel like an outsider looking in. A normal human being watching a bunch of nerds fight eachother with inflatable key-swords and wearing Neon Genesis Evangelion armor or something.

I mean its not like say EVE online where the drama of conartists and soforth feel like a reflection on society as a whole. Theres nothing happening in this event that feels engaging or even sensible. Maybe im just getting too old.

I went back to watch Spoony's oldest video, and it's about how Bayou Billy is an impossible game.

I guess it was kind of funny, and the driving scenes really are pretty hard and annoying, but an impossible game? I've beaten Bayou Billy without cheats before. It's not that bad. He should try moving the character up and down, taking advantage of the fact that his attacks are wider than the enemies', instead of staying on one plane and letting everything punch him. Isn't that a fairly common technique for most beat-'em-ups?

And at the end he's surprised that bullets bounce off enemies wearing bulletproof vests? Knock the vests off, then shoot them. I thought he had an analytical mind.

No, it's never really interesting to be honest; the only reason I'm interested or concerned is because I really enjoyed the guy's work, and that he's really seemed to be having a bad time these past few years.

I have never really been concerned about any of the personal stuff though, because it always seemed to be weird to try and think I had any idea what these people were going through just because I saw them review a fucking movie or game. I've also never been a fan of the more nerdy stuff beyond video games like LARP or any of that shit. It just never appealed to me at all.

Brad Jones is easily my favorite TGWTG's reviewer. Linkara stopped being funny {or possibly never was} years ago, Doug is hit or miss, the nostalgia chick is too monotone.......and angry joe is just plain obnoxious. The guy who does bad movie beatdown is decent.

I do like guru larry and mikejtv, but they aren't big personalities.

and I agree, those god damned skits are never funny when any internet personality does them. Only the plinkett skits come close to being funny.

Actually, after looking at the site, which I haven't visited in a while, besides Doug's stuff, Joe, and Brad Jones I don't think I've ever heard of these other people. I mean, maybe a few from crossovers with Spoony or something, but that's it.

I also can appreciate Joe's lack of crossovers in his videos now that I think of it. He seems to be trying to do the most non-TGWTG thing there, even though he still has a character to his stuff.

Joe has become one of my favorites ever since his ME3 videos. I totally get his persona and humor. Dude makes me laugh in every video.

Joe's catch for viewers is that he's a gamer like ourselves and doesn't sugarcoat things and have to worry about advertising budgets from EA/Activision, etc. Yeah he does the crap game reviews knowing full well the game is going to be crap and pointing out stuff we already know is crap but his other game reviews are quite good and entertaining I find.

That and his actual video reviews are generally quite substantial, even for the bad games. I'd watch him more than Sage.

He really seems quite nice, but in his videos he often comes off as, someone here in this thread described it pretty well, "the voice of the new generation who started gaming with the 360".

Sometimes his reviews hit the nail, sometimes they seem too... hyped up. I do not know how to explain it well.
It is just my impression of him.

Also, I discovered this guy fairly recently. Watched the FF8, 10 and 10-2 videos and then watched the Ultima thing.

Any specific highlights from his older stuff?

Dude, Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of the Flesh.

That was the first Spoony thing I ever saw. Unfortunately it's also the best.

No I dont mean that directly at you. You watch these videos because you find them worth watching. Ive been combing through his site watching some of this fmv games right now because I never ever saw a sega cd/atari jaguar as a kid. I never knew there was a highlander cartoon.

The thing is though when someone jumps the shark they will never go back to their prime. So for anyone out there hoping spoony will eventually go back to normal or at least produce old content that isnt filled with gimmicks it doesnt work like that. Its never worked like that. Hes done on the internet. He had his time. All you can do is archive all the good work and put it in the corner somewhere.

Yeah, you're probably right about that last part to be honest, it's likely wishful thinking on my part that we'll get to see some of his old style in his work.

Also, all I can do is suggest watching his Let's Play Phantasmagoria 2 videos because they're absolutely hilarious. Give those a shot and tell me how you feel about them.

I watched the first 2 hours yesterday and they are pretty great. The combination of his jokes and how dumb the game is just makes the LP amazing.

I know, it's pretty awesome. I suggest watching his LP Ripper videos as well, because they're pretty awesome too.

SWAT 4 videos are great.

I also really like some of his vlog movie rants with twilight and transformers and counter monkey videos but those are totally different style.

I really like Todd's stuff. I find almost all his reviews on pop music to be hilarious.

A lot of arm chair psycho-analysis going on in this post and just this thread in general

Yes, that's precisely why it was so bad. The idiotic shouting in the background was cute the first two times, then immediately got annoying.

Probably because it felt forced as shit, which is the problem with all these TGWTG people. RedLetterMedia's stuff never really feels forced, at least not the actual review stuff itself. Sure, the story in the Star Wars reviews weren't great, but at least they don't shout and fake anger in their reviews, at least not to a noticeable extent where you say to yourself "this is lame."

A lot of arm chair psycho-analysis going on in this post and just this thread in general

All I was saying that he seems like a cool, down to earth dude.
