The Spoony Experiment

Blah I'll have to watch it when I get home from work, only took him one month to get it up fromw hen he promised it but I guess I'm used to that now <_<
 
You know someday i hope spoony reviews Minority Report.
Even if it's a 10 minute april fools type video or something.

I recall someone said that he still planeed on doing it someday i think though.
 
Fantastic ending. Spoony tried to show a path to corruption and on an very personal way giving up his live as an reviewer. The story of him and his brother, what the Ultima Series means for him, how he is aware that his fame and fans will abandon him sometime (the Twitter incident is a taste of that) and finally his real psychological problems. The black gate and the offer of the Guarding was an metaphor for him stop being a reviewer. He refuses. I'm glad, but he knows and we know sometimes it will all break down on him.

Sweet, his Ultima 9 review is a nice return to form and he posted them fairly close together for a change. Checking it out tonight.
 
Watched FFVIII for a while... and no, he is not funny. I love yatzhe but i can't stand that guy. Yatzhe has actually sometimes some valid reasons meanwhile in FFVIII video he for whole opening talked preaty much some idiotic things like seifer squall fight being sissy. It looks like he have problems with understanding rivalty concept that was shown to player that squall and seifer hate eachother.
 
Really, really good review. Had a great ending and a good set up for his next review.

Admittedly, I'm finding it slightly worrying that it does seem like Spoony has obviously taken recent events very hard and is referencing them in his reviews; of course there are also the hints in there that he may end his show as well.

I'm pretty sure he has WAY more educated knowledge on pretty much every RPG out there than Yahtzee has. And way more valid reasons.

I think he pretty much set up that he's going to ride this train as far as it'll go. He's aware that it'll have to end sometime, I think, but for now, I get the sense that he'll stick by it.
 
Anti-magic gun, I wonder if the place he got it from will have anything to do with Linkara's current story-arc.
 
Oh God... I couldn't watch the last bit (before the special effect start, I always skip those). "Fucking emotional" indeed.

I think this Ultima finale was probably some of Spoony's best work, and one of my favorite video reviews of all time.

No, the stuff at the end implies that he is aware that he isn't the best reviewer ever, and he'll lose his fans and fame, but he'll keep reviewing because maybe it's fun to him? Reason as valid as any if you ask me.
 
Great ending indeed, the story about his brother, that is what I want to see more of from reviewers. The sketches are fine but they're always best when they drop acts and speak from the heart.

FFXIII will be... interesting for me, the first time he will have covered a game I actually like. I already hated 8 and 10 on my own just from playing them myself long before he made his reviews, he just voiced what I always felt.

For me Spoony pointed out everything I hated in both FFVIII and FFX even though I really enjoy FFX (I've always been ehh on FFVIII). Considering Spoony already did a vlog on FFXIII I hope he doesn't just repeat a lot of the same gripes.
 
For all the shit he's been getting for his meltdown I'd just like to chip in and say that the Ultima Retrospective has been fucking oustanding even for someone like me who has never touched the series. Super informative and also very funny at times :o)

I don't question his knowledge. I'm question his basic understanding of his reasons.

For example whole FFVIII part1 video is just pure crap from reason point.

First he starts with his review of FF8 opening vid. It is probably the best opening in history of video games. Video is meant to give players overall fell of FF8 not to explain things. But even without dialog you see rivaly between seifer and squall, you see Rinoa and after that word "i'll be waiting" so new players could grasp that girl is main heroine and there will be something going on with her. You see witch and her mysterious powers and Rinoa involvement with her.

I don't even talk about his Gayness-emo song of his because people sometimes have bad ear to really good music, but looking at his review of that part he doesn't have a clue what opening to FF8 is and what it means for new player. It's a teaser what FF8 will show you throughout the game and back then when FF8 had premiere this opening was GODLY in therms of quality.

But that's just opening rant. Most problem with his rant i see in his actual playing. Main character start in infarmy. Rant. Gunblade design (neglecting that it's just lore of game and every fantasy game has ton of nonpractical designs). Rant. Problems is he just goes in this game with his badgame aproach and he only see bad things and that's not all. He criticizes Draw system quoting. " You can't play the game without xxx hours drawing. I just want to play this game"

Problem is :

Whole main game you can play without any serious drawing. Just few times for 1-2 hours. You don't need more that 40 fire spells for each fight. Sure Draw has problems but this problem comes because most of those people are loot whores. If they see you can get 99 of blind spell they will spend whole hour just to have 99 blind spells Thing is 99 blind spells will last you probably for whole game. Draw system works because of GF abilities which transmute some spells to other things. And that's the second thing. With cards and GF abilities you don't need to draw that much at all. Item drops and cards are more effective way of creating spells than simply drawing. First fish enemy drops something that from start give you 10 or 20 water spells.

Next one is GF rant about long cutscenes. That is valid point from 2012 gamer point of view but back then everytime you summoned some GF you were like on christmass party drolling all over the place because all those GF graphic and animations were fucking amazing. With Boost ability you pressed select as mad to boost damage output. Clunkynes was part of that era so there was no skip buttons for cutscenes and you can't simply say game is bad because of it, at that time you would't dare to skip FF cutscene. If you go that way then most of old games are crap by today standards.

When i first saw Kings materia animation in FF7 i didn't say Oh fuck that's long and boring. It was fucking amazing everytime.

I could go on and on. I watched his FF8 video didn't like it as i didn't find his reason well thought and actual reasoning part is on 12 year old kid level.

I think you're missing his point on quiet a few things and letting your love of FF8 blind you to the issues he's addressing. Obviously some of his complaints are jokes such as his opening song and draw magic all day every day (he admits later there are easier/better ways to get magic but points out why they break the game stupidly).

Same here. I thought that whole thing would sour me on Spoony, but here I am enjoying his vids. Spoony is great because he gets me interested in things I have no particular interest in. Like the Ultima reviews, or watching him unbox and talk about table top games. He's just a really fun guy to listen to. (Except for his Dr insane bit and other characters that just plain wear me out)

This is embarrassing. You sound like every other Final Fantasy fan who thinks that the guy broke into your house, took a huge dump on your Playstation console and smashed your 4 Final Fantasy 8 discs into the wall whilst openly mocking everything that you ever held dear to you in your life. The guy is riffing on the game, he uses exaggeration, hyperbole with a light sprinkling of truth. I doubt he needs to be lectured on the fact you can get water spells from a giant fish, which in turn negates his entire criticism of the games magic system and makes Final Fantasy VIII the greatest game of all time. But, you know what, you should probably e-mail him, he's probably unaware of the deep meaning behind the intro movie.

Fucking beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. That speech was just fantastic. I can't remember the last time I felt that engaged by one of these kinds of reviews/videos, it just really was touching.

Oh Come on, That FMV is about the only good thing about that game and I got a good laugh at the Cuss Storm of gay euthimsisms.
