The Top Five Best/Worst Remakes in Gaming History

SMB3 /= worst. It should be in the best category. I know they made a few things easier, but the addition of the e-World levels and SMW power-ups was awesome. I just wish they had published the series 3 and 4 cards.

I think Zero Mission renders the original game unplayable.

That might just be me, though.

If a game is truly unplayable, it was never playable in the first place.

But yeah, Zero Mission was a great update to the original game, if a tad more linear than I would have liked.

Code:
Is Metroid: Zero Mission a terrible game? By no means. On its own terms, it's rather good. But as a reconception of one of the greatest, most influential games ever made, it's a disaster, taking everything that made Metroid spooky and replacing it with a thick layer of corn. Metroid was heavily influenced by Alien. Remember the petrified extraterrestrial skeleton in Alien? What if that bastard had gotten up and started bombarding Sigourney Weaver with some hack's idea of ancient wisdom? Wouldn't that have pretty much thrown the movie's chilly austerity out the window? Like so many latter-day games, Zero Mission thinks comic-book jibber-jabber is cooler than eerie silence. This lack of subtlety is echoed in the gameplay itself, which, while it controls a lot better than Metroid, is chock-full of egregious hand-holding and advice-giving — pretty much the exact opposite of the original's sprawling openendedness. Metroid is practically Lovecraftian in the way it makes you feel tiny and alone in a vast and hostile universe. Don't look for that feeling in Zero Mission. Oh, and it also mangles the most immortal climax in videogame history — the truly unsettling slaughter of a shrieking brain in a jar, followed by a hair-raising escape sequence — by tacking on a (sigh) stealth section. — PS

So basically, the review says that it's a "bad remake" because it has "corn," (don't see any here other than a better color palette) and they wanted "sprawling openendedness" (which the game had by the way) and a spooky atmosphere? (the enemies are still freaky) Did these morans ever play Super Metroid?

They also claimed that the stealth section was "tacked on." For god sakes, if you want to finish the game after the escape sequence, why not stop playing?

O SH--

while everyone freaks out about Zero Mission on the list, I'll go ahead and say the worst remake I ever played was the FFI GBA remake. The difficulty was dumbed down so much, you could pretty much just tap the A Button the entire game and finish it. No more having to grind in the Elf forest to afford that Silver Sword, just so you could last more then 5 minutes in the swamp cave. I think my martial artist was hitting close to 9999 by the time I reached the final boss, and this is without level grinding what so ever.

awful stuff.

That is the worst list of "worsts" that I've ever seen. Shame on you. You have no taste and you also don't even know what a remake is.

Including levels from past games isn't a remake. A remake has to be largely molded around the original, even if the changes are pretty big. That's why, for example, CODE: Veronica isn't a remake of the original RE despite having a few locations based the original game. Mario Kart Wii took some material from the past games, but not enough to craft it as a remake. It's a sequel.

Mario Kart Wii is not a remake.

Metroid Zero Mission is superior to the original in EVERY SINGLE WAY.

Super Mario Bros. 3???

This list is fucking terrible and it's obvious they're just trying to get hits.

Skies of Arcadia Legends GCN

I didn't play Twin Snakes that much, nor the original MGS - so why all the hate? As far as I'm aware, it was very similar save for the cutscenes. No?
The problem -- besides the cutscenes and rerecorded dialogue being largely inferior to the original -- is that the remake uses the MGS2 engine, which essentially breaks the game in places; the player is able to use mechanics like first-person shooting, hanging from rails, etc. that the original game did not count on, and so consequently the whole thing becomes absurdly easy.

I have been playing through Zero Mission the past week or so and its a great game. That rant reads like a complaint against what they read in a FAQ or something. As a Metroid game its top notch, and yes it is pretty huge and sprawling.

I would put Conker into the "worst" because it's more tame than the original which was published by Nintendo. Who would've guessed that? Plus they hyped the shit out of the game originally as an "uncut" experience.

If you wanted hits on your website you should have gone all out and claimed New Super Mario Bros as one of the worst remakes.

Grandia II PS2

Well, it was a port and not a remake but I've heard people say they hate Grandia 2 based on having played the PS2 game. It's one of my favorite RPGs based on having played the DC version. I know there were some glitches with the port but was there any other major difference from the DC & PS2 versions?

im glad im not the only one that hated Dawn of Souls. What was wrong with Sonic GBA?

Watch some videos of it. It very obviously didn't go through QA at all, I've never seen such a buggy piece of software.

Slow as molasses. Same problem Grandia II PS2 had, though that one also had hideous audio problems.

I don't think you know the difference between "port" and "remake". :P

Actually, Zero Mission is pretty much the most non-linear Metroid game in existence when taking into account the ability to sequence break. If you're good enough, you can fight Ridley as the first boss if you really want to.

Resident Evil (GC) was fucking incredible. WELL DESERVED.

Best looking game last gen too.

So I like how after this jackass spams his crap site yet again, he doesn't even post in the thread again.

Fact: Mario Kart Wii is not a remake.

Without getting into an essay's worth of words, Twin Snakes kind of did the opposite of what it was intended to be; instead of being a smartly done infusion of MGS2's mechanics and MGS1's setting and story, it ended up being a fairly big regression of MGS2's gameplay (it doesn't even have real analog movement outside of aiming) that felt incredibly tacked on to MGS1's virtually untouched level design and guard layouts. With the exception of a much-appreciated secret in REX's hangar that cuts down on backtracking, all they did was throw some lockers here and there. Whether this was something that Kojima specifically wanted them to do or just Silicon Knights not having enough time to add stuff, no one knows; we just have the final product to judge.

It was also pretty poorly programmed; the framerate is wildly inconsistent (pray you don't get into a Clearing situation) and the character models were all pretty damn ugly besides Snake and Cyborg Ninja. It is not unreasonable to say that MGS2 looked substantially better, but in a way MGS1 trounces the attention to detail that TTS sorely lacked. Kojima's team is really smart; they ended up using the inadequacies of the PS1 hardware to their advantage for MGS1. You really got the sense that you were in a badly kept nuclear facility with how everything looked worn and run down, which was something that was essentially necessary to hide what the PS1 wasn't capable of rendering (texture warping be damned). In comparison; TTS looked brand new for all the wrong reasons.

There's also the standard list of complaints: VA cast sounded audibly bored that they had to record this game again, over-the-top cutscenes that Kojima had changed to when he was "dissatisfied" with Ryuhei Kitamura's original concepts for them (he actually wanted them to be as close to the originals as possible), really bad music, some weird control choices (like the aforementioned digital movement) and absolutely no new stuff to unlock INCLUDING the removal of the VR missions entirely. Compared to what it should have been, it was quite literally anything but.

...shit that was an essay after all.

Anyways, I definitely don't disagree with their best remake choices, but a huge :lol at their bad remake list. It's like they've completely forgotten actual worthy choices like Sword of Mana and Conker: Live and Reloaded.

Would a game in a series that doesn't have a subtitle (ie Turok or Alone In The Dark) be considered remakes?

That "worst" list is just terrible.

I never played Conker, but Sword of Mana is a horrible experience. That definitely deserves to be slagged off over most other remakes.

Twin Snakes was actually a pretty awesome remake. It definitely had its flaws, like the voice acting, but it wasn't a bad game. Better music than the original too.

That being said, it doesn't belong on a best OR worst list.

I call total bullshit on this article.

Mario 3 GBA looked great, and added a world map that allowed you to play any level in the game after you beat it. What a crock of shit.

I just don't see why it's a good remake. It offers nothing new at all,the graphics don't even feel all that updated do to the shitty grainy graphics. The things they did add made the game too easy and the game has less content than the original game.

No, that's a bad remake.

It wasn't bad, but I can understand not thinking it's great.

But uh.. the graphics?

You're kidding, right? Say what you will about the gameplay, but saying the graphics "don't feel that updated" is wrong.

And all this time I've been too scared to promote my little site on GAF. By golly, I can come up with a worse list than this one if I really put my mind to it.
