The Tragedy of MAG

Easily my favorite MP game of that gen. leading a squad of eight from objective to objective, healing everyone and then going behind enemy lines to wreck havoc taking out AA, Mortar and Sensor Artillary never got old. It was insanely frustrating at times due to the dumb design choices giving SVER the easiest bases to defend. A lot of matches simply ended in a stalemate because of that.

But when it worked, it was amazing. My favorite thing to do was change the spawn of my team to attack alongside another squad of 8. 16 v 8 and by the time the other team caught on, we would have taken their bunker and outflanked them to take out the AA guns. And just like that we had everyone parachuting in behind enemy lines.

It's a shame Sony sent this game to die. The beta was only a week before launch and a pain in the ass to download. Sony was so fucking bad at marketing games back then. This game needed a long beta months before release not just to fix common sense design issues like the SVER maps, but also to generate hype and build up a fanbase.
Loved the game, but SVER was broken. Their weapons having higher base dmg was a no-brainer to pick. I had 3 accounts so I could play with each faction. Mag truly was a game ahead of its time but killed too early by unseen circumstances like the PSN hack, and being an online-only game with something resembling the GaaS model.

I'm not much into shooters but it sounds like MAG was just ahead of its time, and the budget and tech just weren't there for it to be successful. PS5 could probably actually pull the game off now.

It was original and inventive. I remember the framerate, fov and input delay thought.

I think people would like a ps5 remaster but as far as Sony goes, this project will stay dead in the water.

Floating aside all the other IP Sony let go :'(

Awesome, watching this now, always enjoy these GVMERS videos.

That being said, I wasn't fond of mag at all, I genuinely thought it was pretty awful.

Fanboy revisionist memories. MAG sucked. I owned it. It was a steamy piece of poo. PlayStation guys back then wouldn't support a game like this long enough to give it a chance. Hell the online community for Killzone 2 was damn near dead 6 weeks after the game was released. Either way MAG was garbage and the devs were trying to use the player count to hype the game.

Can't comment on mag, but your kz2 memory is completely off. Game was alive for years. I know, I was a 360 gamer coming into PS3 lttp.

Yeah an online shooter that constantly drops below 20fps during big fights. What's the point of bragging about a 'chaotic 256 players battles!' The reality is the ps3 couldn't handle it. Even smaller fights dipped well below 30fps. It's awful.

So yeah, you could make a 1000 player game but if your framerate is well below 30fps, it's more of a gimmick at that point, which is exactly what MAG was.

I supported the game, but I thought it was kind of overrated. The game looked very bland, the shooting felt average. I liked the approach they tried with these battles, but even with only 3 factions it was unbalanced. SVER defense was pretty much impossible to breach.

Perhaps I missed the boat or something, but Socom was another hyped up Sony multiplayer shooter from the past. I thought that one was kind of mediocre as well. And then there is Warhawk. I liked Warhawk... when I was flying one. I didn't enjoy the on foot combat, the third person view etc. I think these games had their charm but they didn't bomb just for kicks.

PS3 just wasn't Sony's finest moment. I bought all their franchises (except for Starhawk I think) and I wasn't completely sold on a lot of them as well. The games I already mentioned had their issues, but I hated LBP's gameplay, I thought Resistance 2 was awful (while the first was merely a fun romp, the third is excellent but damage had been done), Twisted Metal was terrible; in Europe it didn't even work online for most of the time and the AI was god awful. It was a useless game. Then we have Killzone, 2 was excellent but 3? another mediocre game. Gran Turismo 5? I fucking hated it. I waited and waited and then I finally had it, awful standard cards, awful menu's and load times, AI was horrible, this game was an absolute mess. GT5 was to me a perfect representation of the PS3; unfinished, uneven, bloated and just not that fun. It wasn't all bad though. I think the old Infamous games were vastly superior to Second Son. I actually enjoyed GoW3 more than the previous 2 as well. Motorstorm was an extremely fun franchise. Uncharted 2 is arguably the best UC, and there is TLOU.

One of the few shooters I didn't get into (played MGO2, Confrontation, UC2, Resistance 2 etc.) but the game felt very young out of development, yeah it did player count great, but you're getting a 3rd string quarterback.

The only thing that I remember was the hardcore camping on the SVER Maps.

God that was awful.
I share the opinion. MAG sucked.
