The Tree of Life (dir. Malick; Pitt, Penn)

I actually recently got the Blu-Ray when Borders had their 50% off coupon on blu-rays.

Been waiting for the right time to rewatch it (randomly popping it in to awe at the PQ doesn't count!) Its not exactly something I can watch in full at any time.

I haven't watched it since experiencing the full extended cut of The New World, which I think is pretty much cemented as one of my all time favorites at this point.

Also, yeah, will be my first Malick flick in theaters as well.

You know, Malick could probably edit an entirely new 2nd film just from the remaining footage of TTRL.

How wild is that?

I think VoT was always meant to be an expansion/companion piece to the Creation/Space/Time stuff from ToL
That's how I remember it.

Dead said:
That would seem extremely unlikely I think since the running time is apparently only ~135 minutes or so...
And with only 12-15 minutes worth of the creation footage, after 45 minutes was reportedly prepared. It would be a huge waste not to release VoT.

No one will ever see the complete cut of The Thin Red Line, right? Every time I read this it just blows my mind:

The whole production is pretty fascinating.
I hope on Blu-Ray we get to see the full The Tree of Life cut (which was screened a few times in 2010), which contains all of the creation footage for VoT and longish sequences since removed by Malick.
Since he's not in the studio contract-bound position he was in with TTRL, it seems he has time to tinker and release whatever he wants now. I've heard he has been given the option to release a different cut of TToL on video.

There were rumours for a while that he was considering it. But I wouldn't bet on it ever seeing release.

I've seen 35mm prints of Badlands and Days of Heaven, but not the ones I really want to see, The Thin Red Line and The New World. Hopefully a retrospective will come near me sometime soon.

You haven't checked out the Thin Red Line BluRay yet (as in seen the film on BluRay).

Dude....it's amazing. Looks so good, sounds so good. Maybe I misread your post and you've already seen it though....

Someone on IMDb said Pitt has the Oscar in the bag. Might as well go to Vegas and bet everything on it.
fuck no. Malick's flicks are too emotionally distant and melancholy for the academy or the mainstream as a whole to appreciate. They always get a shitload of hype because of the whole myth that has been built up that is Terrence Malick which gets some people to go see the film and then they fucking hate it. This happened with The Thin Red Line and again with The New World. I'm expecting the same thing here. Critics will pan the shit out of it and it will only be seen as a great film in a few years' hindsight in the general public.

While this movie could have some Oscar nominees, I'm willing to bet the house on it not getting a best acting, best directing, writing or best picture Oscar.

I saw the first cut of The New World that was released only at one theater in LA and one in NY for a week for awards eligibility. LOVED that movie.

Fox Searchlight is sending out the poster and a note to press. I should be getting mine tomorrow, but /Film snapped a pic: http://twitpic.com/4k92q5
That's...too much.
And I say this as someone who feels Malick has somewhat changed my life, and has been following the progress of this film for almost five years.

Advance publicity should not make claims like that.

Yeah I saw the new world in theaters.
That's a really great movie.

God, I almost don't want to hype myself for this one. It clearly looks great, but I wonder if I'm building up an impossible standard for myself, ya know?
At the end of the day it's just another movie.

Wrong. It's going to change the way you look at art, life, yourself and others.

I don't have any other expectations other than that this will be a new Terrence Malick movie.

I mean, what else needs to be said?

"Only a masterpiece could reunite Sean Penn and Brad Pitt"

heh

Kinda interesting how Penn has barely featured in much of the actual footage released so far (unless Im missing somethng)

Yeah, that child actor has gotten far more screen time trailer wise than Penn. Curious to see how that plays out into the actual film what with the editing for the trailer.

Hunter McCracken is a much, much bigger part of the film than Sean Penn.

...and the saga continues:

RT @Ryan_Man2 Tree of Life is *still* on for May 4 in UK. There's even a critics' screening on May 3. Who's gonna blink first? #cannes #Icon

3rd Malick film in the theaters for me, saw The Thin Red Line and The New World when they came out.

Can't wait to see this. And we may be getting another Malik film sooner rather than later. Supposedly his next movie is already in the can.

They recently did some reshoots, but yes, it is in the can. It doesn't seem to be as much of a sprawling epic as some of his other films, so I'm not sure how long he'll spend editing. God knows it could be a LONG time.

I'd like to see a coherent trailer. The teaser is great and all, but I want to at least know what characters are in the film.

Brad Pitt is the dad. Jessica Chastain is the mom. The kid is their son Jack. Sean Penn is adult Jack.

There you go!

Malick bro.
Plus that one imdb user said BP killed it.
That guy gives a lot of impressions that I don't agree with. Glad his IB avatar is gone because he doesn't deserve it :P

I feel like blader and the trailer actually gave you all you need to know. We'll know more about the characters in the actual film, but from the trailer we already know it's a young family that grows up as each seems to coexist/battle with nature and with the people around them, delivering a message on the meaning of life as a whole along the way.

lol. Have you seen any of Malick's movies? That IS a coherent trailer.

This looks awesome as fuck - as if in a spiritual humanitarian exploration. The glimpses of the universe really enforce that message that we're all connected somehow.

I've been keeping my eye on it simply because it's Malick and I adore Pitt and Penn, but it was the first time checking out the trailer and seeing those clips. Going to be great watching it in the cinemas.

by the end of this thread, expendable will have posted the entire film in pictures.

That's certainly the goal. I'm just itching for that hi-res
dino
pic. I know they'll wait to release it the final day though. :(

Yeah, I honestly don't mind the existence of the pictures (I know a lot of people hate that they're publicizing it this way) but I don't feel it's necessary to post them here every day. Everyone who wants to see them knows where the blog is.
