The triumph of mobile core games heralds a demographic shift

Yawn. Yet another dumb "Mobile Games are the future and Console/PC games are dying" Bs that we seen a thousand times before. It is so ridiculous that they pull this off when Steam continues to have record breaking Active players, and the Switch you know a handheld, being a very popular seller. Spoiler Alert: Mario Kart Tour is not a replacement for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at all.

Mobile Games are trash anyway, so who cares.

We hear this at the start of every generation now, either from brain dead “journalists” who think they understand the industry better than the people actually in it, or desperate bloggers looking for clicks by being as asinine as possible.

Stop giving these people attention. Please.

Honestly, if its about following the money, mobile it's kinda the present and not the future anymore. It's just harder for companies/devs focused in the livingroom/desktop market to penetrate it.
It is going to be weird when 20 year olds start having nostalgia for old mobile games in a decade or so.

"Dude, remember playing Roblox on the school breaks back in the days? 2019 was the best, right?"

I see my 4.5 years old son go with some train game on the iPad and it reminds me of the time I played my first video game (I must have been around 5 or 6)... The game was the og donkey kong! This will be different for that generation.

He also played some mario party 6 (GameCube) and Scribblenauts (PS4), he I have let him watch me playing some uncharted 4 and other 'mature' games...

I spent a lot of time with my 7yold daughter in the overcooked games, the Sonic cart racers and lately Scribblenauts, hopefully she will have good memories around that, on the ipad she seems to be playing some puzzle / problem solving games.

But the older kids (7 to 12) seem to be mainly playing Fortnite, Roblox, among us... I heard the older kids talk CoD, Destiny and even the division.

My sample is small, but from what I have seen, all the kids that have a choice play on PC or consoles.

If you get a mobile game that hits then you can make extreme amounts of money. I think you would have an Easier time raising capital for a mobile game company than a traditional games company. All that said, I don’t care for mobile games.

I like (some) mobile games, sue me.

and no, not console-like games, ports and emulators that need a gamepad or that dreaded on-screen virtual gamepad with no touch feedback... touch interface calls for its own style of games that is all about touching and swiping, not pushing buttons or analog sticks.

Also, some genres like idle games are an essentially mobile thing, as you play by overlooking growth during idle time, while you're not playing - it's not about not playing, it's that individual actions are not the point, but the overall flow made up from your decisions at key points in managing resources.

whatever pc guys feel, there's no computer more personal than a device always in your pocket or hand...

When God finally decides to remove our species from existence with extreme prejudice it won't be for the atrocities we've committed against each other or nature...

...it will be because of mobile gaming.

Butr Its like mobile it getting more consoleized as it the tech grows and cosoles get more up the BS above as they try to expand the market.

i have seen kids playing mobile games first then they go for consoles and PC. I think mobile is just a gateway to pc and console gaming.

People look at mobile gaming in the wrong light. It's basically at the same stage of videogames from the late 70's and early 80's. Mobile gaming will evolve past strictly Gacha mechanics because of gamepass or subscription models. The potential market drawfs consoles and PC combined. Eventually the someone will figure out the correct algorithm between Gacha and free thru subscription. I doubt Microsoft or Sony will figure it out and will be rolled under by this next wave. Nintendo will be fine. Consoles will still exist but will be small potatoes to mobile and not the main driver of the industry. I would bet Amazon or a Chinese company crack the code and win the next gaming wars. All the old consoles companies except Nintendo are focused on the past and not what is coming up next.

The fundamental problem with mobile is the lack of physical controls. Mobile cannot evolve past gacha mechanics because the control scheme isn't suitable for anything else.

Pong was once the pinnacle of videogame technology, then technology evolved. Touch controls on phones will improve when the demand is large enough. That's how technology works. Most mobile games are made by "c" team videogame companies, anyway. Gacha is so big for mobile cause subscriptions for games is a new concept. The big 3 auto didn't take the Japanese seriously, Hollywood didn't take Netflix seriously, retail didn't take Amazon seriously. If traditional console makers don't take mobile seriously they'll end up the same way. Streaming full console games like Xcloud is a dead end, IMHO. Takes to much mental awareness away from player when they are just looking to kill 5-10 minutes in line or 45 minutes on a bus ride to and from work.

no, they won't. It is what it is. pc gaming is tied forever to keyboard and mouse, phones to touch interface, consoles to gamepads

the next step in input devices evolution is fully tracked motion in spatial computing to let you interact with digital interfaces and objects from within - that's VR and AR

I agree that the keyboard and mouse and touch phones are concepts that aren't going away for the next 100 years or so. They are too efficient. Just like cars have 4 wheels and is a core concept. Console gamepads will probably be replaced, maybe with our phones as the gamepads. VR doesn't get me excited for gaming and reminds me of videogame arcades from the 80's. The concept has been around for 30 years or more and hasn't caught on. Google glasses AR as a computer replacement is a cool concept. It's more of an augmentation of and less efficient then keyboard & mouse and touch phones.

Between innovations like haptic feedback, touch bar (both part of Sony's last couple consoles) and HD rumble (Nintendo Switch), and tactile controls for action oriented games, controllers are here to stay as well.

Try doing any of that on a mobile phone.

The lack of improvement for gamepads is pretty strange. It's basically the same concept from the 80's. By now we should be on touch screen integration or snapping our phones into game controllers. Nintendo is further along than Microsoft and Sony which are supposedly tech giants.

Literally cope the thread, nice.
Mobile Games are trash anyway, so who cares.
I like all platforms (fuck stadia though) so the article is dumb because there is a market for all types of gamers but numbers don't lie son.

The Switch is a portable console, is trying to not be just another traditional system with actual exclusives and it has sold greatly in Asia where mobile gaming rules. So yeah...

Yeah but I think when they talk "mobile games" they mean pay to play gacha games.
Are there many gacha games on the Switch?

The article is suggesting that core games are establishing a foothold on mobile. Less gacha, more console style experiences.

Second screens don't work well with gaming as it requires you to shift your attention away from the gameplay. The only reason it worked for the ds/3ds is because the screens are so small and close together, essentially 1 screen with a crack in the middle.
