The two events: Side by Side - which was stronger?

How can these "look promising" when all that was shown was CGI? And when it comes to Fable, it could have been anything. They should have just showed the title.
I think the CGI as of now shows a promising concept. Whether these game actually lives up to that promise is another thing.

Hellblade 2 and fable I wanted to see more of, I would say it's about even, but I would give the edge to the PS5.

Nothing in that Sony conference was impressive either. And before anyone screams fanboy I haven't own a console since ps3.
Disagree. Even with poor stream quality, Ratchet and Horizon 2 both looked next-gen and were exciting reveals. Were either as exciting as previous next-gen unveils? No. But the Xbox showcase lacked those moments of impact from a gameplay and from a visual spectacle perspective.

Halo: Infinite looked very, very current gen and quite bland (I watched it for the first time at 4k/60 FYI). Those times when they panned around the skylines and vistas in an attempt to show the visual fidelity fell flat.

I own and enjoy all systems, but let's call a spade a spade — this wasn't good.

I will say I'm really curious to see more Fable though, Playground is an excellent studio and in my view, at the very top of Microsoft's first-party.

The loud and unavoidable difference between the two is that Sony showed us more of what these games actually look like when you're playing them. We know what Gran Turismo, Ratchet, and Death Loop look from behind the controller. We know what Horizon and Kena are going to look like in game.

They couldn't even do more than a cinematic for Fable.

I honestly don't know. I felt like after seeing Sony's show it would be an easy win for MS, but they somehow managed to equal or come in under Sony. Unbelievable. I mean just a "good" showing for Halo would have secured the win, but they basically showed us Halo 5 DLC. Doesn't even look next-gen, huge stretches of environments popping in and inspired story and gameplay.

PS5.

The best thing that I can say about the SX is that Everwild game art looks dope.... Everything else looked pretty bad to average.

I'm really excited for the new Stalker but if it doesn't come out for PS5 I'll be getting it for PC. Xbox just doesnt bring it, ever.

Xbox wasn't bad but with the hype they created , I'd say it fell flat. You had Phil saying he feels good after Sony's show and lots of talk about creativity with the CEO even saying stuff but it wasn't nearly as good as they led us to believe.

Shouldn't have been a surprise given Spencer felt 2015 was the best lineup in Xbox history.

Maybe I'm wrong but I believe you should include the outstanding PS5 trailer into the Sony showcase. I repeat: that was a really really good trailer, not a game, but it increased the wow factor. Strange to me that MS doesn't made a similar video with XBSX.

If it wasn't for Demon's Souls remaster (which i'm still cautious about), I wouldn't have found an exciting thing in either presentation.

Good one mate! Enjoy using game pass to play all those great exclusive indy games.
I will. Thanks. 😁 Pretty sure the majority of what they showed today wasn't indie... But hey whatever. Also I'll end up buying a PS5 as well because to me its a which one to buy first, not an either or.

If they showed the gameplay of Fable, hellblade2, forza and Avowed i would of taken the conference a bit seriously.

Why am i saying that? Because look at their announcement of halo infinite then its teasers then the gameplay, there is a huge drop down in quality. Comparing it to previous halos it's not impressive, just a normal average upgrade.. Its gameplay looks this gen with just few pc touches.

When you remember phil spincer mocking the quality of sony's conference, it is normal for me to compare the quality of [God of war or ghost or tlou2] to halo infinite, even these games beat the pc version of halo infinite in terms of game development. It just felt like if you still like halo story you will just continue the story in an open world.

Microsoft looks like it's being held back by current gen (hmmm, wonder why). At least the Sony conference had some next-genm graphics.

By next-gen premier standards, they were both pretty good, with a slight edge to Sony.

Too bad Avowed was only a CG teaser.

Both were pretty lame.

Ryse Son of Rome and AC Unity were extremely much more impressive in 2013 than any of the crap that they showed in 2020.

I don't count time exclusives as I can wait for these games. So for me stuff like Kena and The Medium don't count. Also I don't count multiplatform games, I'm clever enough to not fall for a marketing campaign and no these games are coming out for both systems.

It's all down to the exclusives and for me Sony wins here. In terms of graphics Ratchet and Clank looks phenomenal. Microsofts showcase game Halo Infinite looks terrible graphically, studio didn't do that well with Halo 4 and 5 as fans didn't like those as much as 3, and this has rumours of development issues, no ray tracing at launch and already stating this will be a platform screams this game is just being pushed out early to make launch. The memes are enough to say the graphics are bad. As for Microsofts other exclusives I just can't get excited by CG trailers, these games seem super far off, we don't even know the genre of Everwild, we don't know the scope of these games like Obsidians RPG, is it a smaller world like Outerwilds or a massive world. Fable was a lane CG teaser again we don't know the scope of the game and Fable 3 wasn't exactly exciting back in the day so they should have showed why I should be excited.

As for Sony Gran Turismo 7 didn't look all that in terms of graphics but them teasing the return of their singleplayer mode makes me excited. Also Spiderman Miles Morales just seems like more of the same as it's more of a expansion but it being so soon and being a launch title makes me not mind so much. Returnal looks pretty cool as atleast we see gameplay, looks like a evolution of that arcade gameplay but with a bigger budget. It's great to see Demon's Souls Remake confirmed. Horizon 2 looks gorgeous but lack of gameplay is dissapointing however it doesn't bother me as much as Microsoft as Guerilla Games have my trust as I know what the scope will be like for that game. Sackboy just looks awful. Finally Destruction All-stars looks intriguing but nothing that screams I need a PS5.

Overall Sony's showing kills Microsoft by a landslide. Not only that but Microsoft have more to prove where as people trust Sony more they literally just released 2 highly critical games.

I graded them both the same.
We came away from both pretty much seeing what we expected.
You can imagine my shock to see another Spiderman, Horizon, GT and Ratchet game for PS? Or my shock to see SOD3, Halo, Outer Worlds add on, Forza for the Xbox?
One thing MS did however is wipe that "Xbox has no games" meme off, and it should be added to the 9tflop ban rule here on GAF.
There is a ton of games coming out for the XSX.
So, both were what I expected to see.

Xbox show was better paced. Gamewise, about even. If MS had more gameplay trailers there would be no competition.

Both had some excellent showing. Ori is one of my all time favorites and Everwild looks dope. But Sony had the wow factor and it wasn't close.

If you go by quantity its close for me 7/9 MS/PS games that I am interested in. But I am more excited for a more of the PS games on the list. So comparable but the PS one has the edge for my tastes.

Although i wasnt blown away by it (as i expected), Microsoft show still gave a better example of next gen visuals over the whole show. Many people are underwhelmed by Halo, but i actually thought it looked really good. I have just been playing Halo 2 Anniversary on PC, which is the best looking Halo so far, and Infinite was considerably better looking, while also being open world at 4k/60. Everwild, Forza, Stalker 2, that Remedy game, The Medium, all looked quite impressive to me. Same with some of the others, although its hard to tell what wasa cg and what was in engine with some of the others.
You might want to watch that clip again
Sony's show had a lot of games, but like 70% of them were cartoony, and outside of Horizon, nothing looking next gen, or way beyond what PS4 could achieve.
Hell in terms of my kind of games, Microfts much derided 3rd party showing impressed me more.
At the moment i'm very happy thats its Microsofts games that are coming to PC day and date, and not Sony's.
"Cartoony"

😂😂 Unbelievable

Was really looking forward to halo running on xsx with its unlimited budget. I was thinking initially : wtf, looks average, it s gonna pick up and blow us away. Instead it fizzled badly. Just played a random cod recently on my pro, and well... 12 tf for that ?

Rest of games had me hyped until i realized there was no gameplay shown. Looked like e3 2005 from sony, except my jaw dropped during kz2 and motorstorm.

I ll stick to PlayStation for next gen so.

Unfortunately the answers aren't going to be of much use here.. due to how much bias and loyalty effects things.

All I can say is that I was always planning on getting a PS5 and I was very happy with the reveal event....
I love Spider-man, R&C and Horizon. I have been waiting a long time for a new full GT.

Demons Souls looks incredible and Housemarque gameplay is always on point so Returnal is full of potential.

Kena looks fantastic and a lot of people are getting that Zelda vibe from it. (These guys did a Majoras Mask fan film that everyone wanted made into feature film)

Little Devil Inside looks great too. Death Loop gameplay looks smooth and fun.

You have to consider what is undoubtedly coming on PS5 too...GOW sequel, ND games, possibly a Silent Hill game and probably a Ghost of Tsushima sequel at some point and a Kojima game.

The way PlayStation delivered 2 or more great games almost every year.... just gives me a lot of faith in them.

That is why I'll get a PS5 slim good stuff will be out by the. Until then gamepass is my choice during the blahs of generation change over. If it was a silent hill remake that probably would of won me over sooner not a fan of anything Sony showed so far outside gt7.

PS5 at least had a focus and had plenty of games aimed at their audience. Xbox was more scattershot and a lot of the releases just came as across old or current games getting up ports.

For me personally each show had one new game that looked fun(Grounded/Kena) and one that might have promise(The Medium/Pragmata)

Only interesting games at the confernces for me was

Sony: GT7 (Not coming out until 22-23 probably), Pragmata (Multiplat)

Xbox: Avowed (Not coming out until god knows when), Stalker 2, The Medium and NG PSO2.

So xbox wins for me, not buying any of these on launch, getting a new xbox for next gen down the line tho when stalker 2 and medium comes out. Maybe a PS5 when gt7 releases.

If xbox would have the level of quality for games like playstation has , they wouldnt give it away for free on gamepass.

I rather pay full price for sony first party and get a 10 out of 10 game than pay a monthly fee and get crackdown.

What i am trying to say os xbox produces games with gamepass on mind so limited financial and marketing resources.
They should do half and half.
Make game like crackdown forza etc for gamepass but also offer that one or 2 game a year that are just soo good they sell a shitload of it and sell consoles with them.

You know if you are a pc player you get a ps5 but you really dont see the need for an xsx since gamepass is on pc as well and you get to play with the highest settings possible.

I thought both shows were pretty good but Sony's show had higher highs but Xbox had more games I'm actually interested in. The problem is those games I'm interested in are on other platforms as well. But since we're comparing the two shows(1 of which I only saw), I'd have to give the nod to Xbox on that front. Looking forward to what Sony has to show next, though.

True. But if I'm spending $500 on a console with the intention of buying both I'm going to buy the one that gives me the most value and playability. My biggest issue with new generations is the release of one or two games then a months ling dry spell. Having access to 100+ games at launch is a good change.

It all depends right. Ultimately, for someone who isn't already invested in one ecosystem over another, game pass is hard to ignore but they definitely need to make sure the quality and number of titles available keeps up with expectations.

Actually I would dispute this. Change of generation is the perfect time to change ecosystems for somebody if they only have one console, especially with Sony being so vague about backwards compatibility. Because MS is so committed to BC they would actually be the harder ecosystem to step away from IMO.

TBH for $15 a month, that also includes live and PC games, it doesn't take much to make the service worth while.

Horizon, Spiderman, Demon Souls, and Ratchet and Clank trump's anything and everything that Xbox has shown. And they haven't touched the rest of Sony's heavy hitters.

Sony showed far more gameplay and had the more impressive games. CGI trailers don't impress me. Also where was the night of "Mic Drops"?

I think Xbox event was better - expected nothing, that's exactly what I got.

expected VR everywhere in The Future of Games by Sony - not a hint even in GT7 or Astro Bot, so obviously incredibly let down
