Yeah, that ending reeked of badassery.

Was a little disappointed with the overall issue though. Seemed very short.

Here's to waiting another month. Woo hoo...

I know...

I was reading this since issue 61ish so I was able to go through a huge chunk in a brief time. I had no idea the month wait would be so hard. It literally takes 10 minutes to read through an issue and then 40310 more of excruciating wait time.

I've never really gotten into comics or graphic novels at all. But after hearing the news that Frank Darabont was going to do a zombie TV show, I figured I should at least check out the source material, since he's really good at adaptations. I ordered the first book from Amazon, it showed up today and I read the first chapter/act in one sitting, I love it so far. My only complaint is the odd choice of words that are bolded in his dialogue. It really stands out, almost to the point it takes me out of the story sometimes. But that's a minor complaint, the book has impressed me enough to buy the next 3, here's hoping book 5 is done by the time I am caught up.

Totally agree with the complaint about the letterer's odd choices. The switch from Moore to Aldlard (sp?) was quite jarring at first, but I've really grown to like him. Just finished the vol. 9 TP and need to grab vol. 10 but my local shop doesn't even have it. I might have to start reading the individual issues.

I really hope Kirkman doesn't fuck this up. I've just recently gotten back into comics and great writing really makes a book shine. Between Batman Year One and TWD, great writing makes books like Brian Wood's DMZ terrible by comparison.

Anyone else in this thread read DMZ? I'm just not getting into it like I have with TWD. I have the first DMZ TP and I'm doubting it's worth continuing. I enjoy the art much more than TWD, but the writing is iffy. The pacing is fucking terrible.

I did some digging about what comes next.

Paraphrased of course:

Kirkman said:
Basically, Rick and Co. find a safe zone/community. Like a small town thats absolutely protected. And civil. No crazy stuff like the Governor's town. Are Rick and Co still "human" enough to live in this new place? Or have they been changed to much?

Sounds awesome to me. And it perfectly follows what Rick was talking about this issue.

This issue was brutal. Things just get darker and darker.

Has there ever been a comic without horrendous bolding action going on? It's just so bad in everything. I don't even know what they're trying to do with it. Is it emphasis? volume? I don't even know any more.

Isn't that going to be
Washington DC
?
If so
it will be interesting to see how they begin to cope with being under government authority and whatnot. That along with the prospect of getting some answers should be interesting. Esp. since Rick and co. (aside from the scientist) won't be anything special.
These spoilers are for speculation post issue 65.

How many single issues have there been since they (i guess spoiler? not really but just in case)
meet the priest on the road and the issue ends with other people watching them from the woods
? That's where I left off. I dunno if I should just stick to the trades from now on.

That was #61, #66 was just released.

What do you mean Squirrel Killer?
Besides the prison issues, they've been on the road dealing with the "Baddie of the Trade Paperback" since the second issue. It's time to shake up the formula.
And re-integrating them into a functioning society/making them the "monsters" for once is a nice way to do just that.
Kind of like what I said in post #71.

Finished catching up on all 67 issues after the compendium went back into print.

fuck... this stuff is incredibly bleak and depressing but it's so damn good. kirkman's got me as a fan till the end.

I've always wanted to get into this series, but the fact that it's ongoing reduces my interest every time I take a look at it. I'm a sucker for hardcover compilation editions, and seeing the variation in releases for this series - I figure I'll just wait until everything settles and someone makes a decision to make something equivalent to DC's Absolute Editions.

Told you dude, this is the best series running, maybe my favorite comic ever, and easily my favorite Zombie IP ever.

Walking Dead Compendium. Issues 1-48, $37.79.

This series isn't ending anytime soon. Like maybe not in the coming decade.

Are the two hardcover compilations worth the buck ? Or should I just get the paperback one for $37.

The two mega hardcovers aren't worth it. The first is out of print (you can buy it for $300 on Amazon), and the second is $67.50. They each hold the content of two books (the regular hardcovers) which are $23 each. So I'd say go with the regular hardcovers if you really want that binding + larger size, but in general, go with the compendium. Incredible price + convenience.

So yeah, the compendium.

Is the compendium really only in paperback? I hate flipping through 1000-page paperbacks because the bezel is so damn huge and covers up the pages. Otherwise I would rather pay full-price and buy the Books.

If you don't want the compendium, go ahead and get the 12-issue hardcovers.

Book 1-4 are out, and Book 5 comes out like in Jan IIRC.

I would love to buy the regular hardcovers but it's dam expensive because of the shipping rates :( But I will go with the compendium if the special HC editions don't have anything extra.

Oh yeah, the HC do have extras.

They include the covers (which neither the compendium nor the regular trades have). And like 5 pages of sketches and stuff (as opposed to the Invincible HCs which have like 100 pages of bonus stuff).

The covers are nice, but that + the binding + the bigger size isn't enough to justify the extra $54 you would spend going with the HCs for the same amount of issues. IMO, of course.

Side note, I was worried about the paper quality in the Compendium. I figured it would be really thin (shitty) paper like the Bone paperback. It's not, it's high quality glossy paper like in the regular issues.

gdt - I borrowed the first TPB and loved it. Now I'm waiting on more from the library.

Good stuff. Ask Costanza, the first TPB is the weakest. You'll love the rest.

We need to build the audience for the show!

I've only read up to issue 50 or so... but has/will Tony Moore come back? I think I enjoyed his art more than the actual storyline.

Man, I far prefer Adlard. Far.

Just finished The Compendium (my first reread of the whole series).

Man, I forgot just how fucking crazy shit get toward the end of the Prison issues. So goddamn awesome.

And crushing. Bleak as fuck.

This thread made me check when Vol. 11 is coming out. It's a shame it doesn't come out before Christmas. Would love to have it to read on my vacation.

Oh and while this thread is current,

Issue 68 (which came out last week) was really, really good. Shows just how much Rick's changed, and how damn awesome this next (long form) arc is gonna be.

Sweet, the latest trade paperback (vol. 11) arrived at my local comic shop today, gonna go pick it up after work. Most likely I'll read and finish it today and then have to wait four months for the next one :/

(bumping this because me and gdt are the only ones who end up discussing this in the weekly comics threads and this comic is too good to be confined in those threads.)

So yeah, how fucking fantastic was this week's issue? Especially those two pages about
the "Daddy ate my eyes" story
. God damn. And people say Kirkman sucks at dialogue :lol

Yeah, the issue this week was fucking fantastic. The whole fucking thing.

Rick as sheriff/constable/whatever is gonna be sooooo awesome.

Ya the Hunters was a bit disappointing, although the last issue confirms to me the Hunters was set up for this new story, to show how good Rick and company are at surviving compared to other people and to reiterate again that a lot of people are crazy. But the whole ending to the Hunters was anti-climatic and redundant.

Really looking forward to seeing how this town turns out.

Don't worry guys, I'll discuss the comic with you too. When I get the next paperback (volume 12), which should be around june/july :/

any fucking word on #71? what a shitty release schedule

Should be out soon, we're around a month.

I'm surprised it's late, Walking Dead has never been late since I've been reading it monthly.

damn i want to get the compendium badly. thanks for bumping this again.

this thing has been on my wishlist for a while now.

Looks like it's out this coming Wednesday, btw.

I'm really interested in this series, but the Compendium costs €52 - 70$. Ordering it from Amazon would probably just be a couple of euro's cheaper after shipping and taxes.. :/

I just got an iPad. Is this up in cbr for me to buy anywhere? I bought comic zeald in hopes that GAF can point me in the right direction for comic books.

Get an app called Comics, by Comixology.

They're like $8.99 each for the trades and $2 an issue.

The compendium is cheaper, though.

I think I ran through like 60 odd issues or so in a few days; enjoyed the hell out of it.

Then came the waiting game and feeling disappointed because there wasn't enough.

I'm reading something like 10 comics monthly, so the wait doesn't really bug me. Every week is something new.

But, if you're only waiting for The Walking Dead, maybe just trade waiting is better for you. A new trade every six months.

This series sounds pretty good. I see that the first Compendium collects 1-48, is there going to be a second one? If so any idea when it comes out?
