THE WALKING DEAD: Season 1 on AMC (avoid comic book spoilers)

- NY Times Review: The Undead Are Undaunted and Unruly
Finally, perhaps as a backlash against all the girlish, gothic swooning over “Twilight,” zombies are making a comeback. A new series that begins on AMC on Sunday is one of the most vivid examples of the revival. “The Walking Dead” is based on Robert Kirkman’s popular graphic novels. And the television adaptation is surprisingly scary and remarkably good, a show that visually echoes the stylized comic-book aesthetic of the original and combines elegant suspense with gratifyingly crude and gruesome slasher-film gore.

Can't wait to see this in HD. It's kinda sucking on me it's only a six episode S1, and we won't see S2 till a year from now :/.

Not too long now!

:D

Days Gone By
Sheriff's Deputy Rick Grimes awakens from a coma to find a world plagued with the walking dead; With his wife and son missing, Rick braves the dangerous new world to find them.

Edit: Just noticed my title got changed...:(. I had to think about that for all of 30 seconds!

Finally found this topic :P

When I saw the first news about this show, I had to get the comics right away. It and Scott Pilgrim are the only series I've ever read, but damn is this good. I have all of the current 6issue volumes (because I like the covers better than the books and they were easier to find).
And I've been hyped for this show for so long. That's why I couldn't resist watching the pilot early. And I'll watch again tomorrow night and buy it on Amazon in HD, because it's fucking awesome.
It's great that the comic and pilot have their little differences that will set them apart, but the show preserves the excellent apocalyptic feel of the comics.
I don't care that SEMI COMIC SPOILERS AND SOME SHOW SPOILERS
the second episode is supposed to be all action. From what I've read, it's basically like they stretched the part of the comics where Glenn and Rick escape Atlanta and made it involve a bunch of the survivors. Especially when the 3rd episode is supposed to be all character development.
I saw some people saying they're worried about COMIC SPOILERS
the prison stuff starts, since it's a lot of talking at times. I LOVED that part. It had some excellent character development and a whole bunch of interesting shit going on.

So it's currently at an 86 on metacritic, with only one mixed review. And that review is kind of ridiculous.

Basically, according to the reviewer, the show isn't very good and it's hard to watch because there's no comic relief and the desperate situations force the characters to do morally reprehensible things.
The morally reprehensible things are what makes the comic so good. The entire thing is about survival. That's what makes it compelling.
And this show doesn't need comic relief. In Breaking Bad, where there's a masterful blend of dark comedy and drama, it works. But having an episode about Rick chasing a fly in TWD would not work out.

Darabont is such an inconsistent director. He is capable of great things, like Shawshank but then he directs stuff like The Mist, which looks like a made for TV movie.

I might be in the minority but I loved The Mist! And I loved the Shawshank and Green Mile too, of course!

I for one welcome the backlash of the pussification of the vampire genre. Not sure why its being correlated to The Walking Dead being so gory but fuck it, I'm on board.

Me too. Even Dracula wasn't a puss.

Has anyone explained this yet? Why is the pilot tonight an hour and a half? Isn't it just a regular 40 min episode? Is it loaded with THAT many commercials?

Does anyone know when/if this is coming to the uk?
First google result was this article that says you get it Friday at 10 on FX, FXUK site confirms it. :D
I would think you might be able to buy a copy online or something early.

Hahahaha no way that would be freaking insane.
It has a normal amount of commercials in a 90 minute slot. Full episode is about an hour long.
and episodes are normally closer to 50 minutes on amc just saying

The pilot is 1 hour and 7 minutes. So they may have minimal commercials, but it doesn't sound bad.

I see there is a lack of faith that I will be watching a relatively high profile TV series about ZOMBIES based on a popular graphic novel series with heavy inspiration from 28 Days Later.

I am disappointed in this lack of faith. If you want to know why I haven't been in the threads, it's because the show starts Nov 5th on FX Asia, and I don't want to get spoiled since I haven't actually read the comics. It looks fantastic though.

This isn't inspired by 28DL in the slightest.

Read the comics.

Well, zombie media might be one of the most incestuous subgenres of all. Almost every zombie movie, comic and video game lifts ideas, characters and scenes wholesale from other zombie stuff.

I can either download a shitty divx copy of this tomorrow, or wait until friday for FX to air this in HD in the UK,

I guess I can wait.

I wonder when international streaming will become the norm... it seems almost silly to not allow people to give you money or advertising bumps because they're in a different country. Granted, the ads would need to be custom to the country but... hell, I already get adds based on my Facebook Profile and Amazon searches so.... how hard could it be.

(I'm sure there's a bunch of red tape involved but hopefully one day streams will all go to every country)
