The Warhawk Beta Summer of Awesome (PS3)

I think Sgt Spud has a thing for blowing my Warhawk out of the sky, He had to get atleast half of his points in a Dogfight we had earlier against me :lol.

At one point I was chasing him all around the map but he just wouldn't die, I would gun him and he would pick up some more health.

Sadly, haven't seen a GAF server up in a couple of days now. =/

I put one up every time I go on hoping for GAFFERS to join, but it crashes within 10 minutes.

Struck lucky on this one server; been playing for 45 mins now with no freeze. 16 people with varying game modes.

Love the CTF games in Warhawk. I can see myself stayin on the 32 player CTF games.

edit: well almost an hour was a good run :lol

Well I'm good in the air, but not so good on land. I just discovered the power slide too. you have some much control over these things, its awesome.

I've tried a couple of times to put a dedicated passworded NeoGAF server up here on the East coast when I'm not playing, and it crashes in less than an hour. During that time, I only see like 3 people join the game.

I'll try to run another deathmatch server tonight, if anyone's interested. Password is believe as always. My ID is AVclub.

Okay. Final balancing comment I will make:

Flak turrets. Down. Now.

WAY too powerful. Missile...okay. But flak turrets...they shoot like six bullets that all AUTO AIM for the plane. Oh my GOD.

You think so? I don't. Basically when you see what direction they're hitting you from, you turn either 90 or 180 degree's and boost away, land, then go take them out on foot. They're not so powerfull that they kill you extremely quickly, only if you linger around. And w/out any auto-aim, it would literally be impossible to hit anything, which in itself would make turrets useless.

I usually stock up on 3 weapons before I snag a hawk. Binoculars, rocket launcher, sniper rifle. This is more than enough to keep you alive on foot in almost all fights. If anything needs to be toned down, it's the hand gun. Infinate ammo and an extremely fast rapid fire? It beats out every ohter weapon.

I don't necessarily mind their power, it's the auto aim. They function like little missiles. There is hardly any reason to use the lock-on missile turret when you have bullets of HOT SHOTGUN TO DIE cutting through the air like Ridge Racer V jaggies.

edit: And don't host the gaf room unless you can host 20+ players. It's impossible to connect any time over 14 if you are limited to 16. :(

I don't think they're overpowered at all. They're a lot more fun now that I realized you can reload while waiting so that you have less downtime.

The lock-on missile turrets though are just lol, gg warhawk.

There seems to be more autoaim with the handgun than with other guns as well. I was playing a DM game in a small area with 7 other guys, and I won by a fair margin just from using the handgun and grenades.

Just had a pretty good TDM game with some GAF guys before crashing. If they could get that fixed, I might actually be able to put enough time into this to stop sucking.

Blue totally rocked that session!

Best game I've played yet, lots of GAF peeps and no d/c for me (until the bitter end) and, unlike the first round, I didn't cluster bomb a handful of my own team to kill one guy not realizing teamdamage was on. :lol

And yes teammates, when I DO accidentally/carelessly cluster bomb you to hell and gone I am in fact yelling "cluster bomb! cluster bomb!! CLUSTERBOMBBB!!!!" like that knob in the PSP commercial. I'd expect the same from any one of you. :D

cluster bomb! *punches arm*

i stop putting up a gaf server..... After waiting 10-20 mins for the server to full up it would crash. We would maybe get one game in.

After the crashes are fixed, i will host all the time.

That was lots of fun! My home DSL line kept a server running for almost an hour and a half before it froze up. The small map TDM was great. I think I liked the smaller capture the flag game the best though, even if my team lost. Thanks for joining guys.

Please send me friend invites if you haven't already. :)

Ninja-Edit: AVclub is the name on PSN if you haven't guessed yet.

I ran one 2 nights ago on my DSL Line. We played for 1 hour the first time, before I had to leave and quit.

The second one ran for 2 hours, 8 people, no crashes, until I quit to go to bed. If you want me to make one, I can right now, lemme know if there is any interest cause I will password protect it for you gaffers.

BAH! I SHOULD be a part of this, but the Sony gods have some sort of secret agenda where they have to keep toying with my patience and emotions.

Eh, I sent them an email regarding my situation, hopefully I hear back from them soon.

Ridiculous.

It sucks man, I'm in the same situation as you.

i've been looking for GAFers on warhawk servers for days and only met Aeon and arkajing (sp?). Now i'm out of town in NYC and you guys start to play... you guys just dont want to play with me.. :(

Any gaffer's other than Click and BobTheFork on my ranked server (NeoGAF_Ranked)? Any lag? Anybody doing team killing that you want me to kick/ban? Any opinions on the map/mode list I chose?

Small maps are great. I like the big ones too, but I think you really get dynamic combat on the smaller maps as opposed to really just turret/warhawk battles like you get on Archipelago.

It's not so much auto aim as it is an area effect. They are explosions afterall. And it doesn't seem like they track you, more so, they just "lead" so that it helps to correct you so long as the enemy is in the aiming reticle. I think if anything should be fixed about the weapon, it's not it's auto aim or it's power, it's just the size of the target window.

Another thing that is bothers me about the turrets is how much damage they can take. It shouldn't take 5 swarm missiles or 2 homing missiles to take one of them out. It might help balance things out if they went down a little easier.

I tried analog control for warhawks again. Yea, I don't think I'm going back. Although it felt odd not being able to tilt to control the hawk. Maybe I will go back, good thing there's always an option.

Okay, I'M IN!

Yeesh, finally. Long story short, Sony confused 2 of my similar looking emails and sent the beta to the wrong account.

Last night I finally got to play a full match (CTF) and it was fun as hell. I really need to concentrate on maneuvering skills in the Warhawk so if anyone has any pointers (or knows of a place I can go for pointers) please let me know.

Has anyone found a good common ground for the controls when quickly switching between flying and hover mode in the Warhawk? I really like the idea of flying in batshit fast close to the ground and hitting hovermode....but the control scheme change is just too much for me to do it with any kind of accuracy and quickness.

Invite me into a clan, you bitches!

Anyway, I put way too much time into playing the game (trying to get a handle on the Warhawk controls above everything). And besides the crashing/freezing and some of the unbalance, I'm really, REALLY enjoying it. I was just barely able to get in one ranked game w/o a freeze.

The feeling of hopping in a Warhawk and taking off into the stratosphere within 2 seconds is incredible. The sounds are especially well done. Hearing a Warhawk screaming overhead when you are down on the ground it also an awesome moment.

I'm still torn on the controls. I use the Pro Controls w/ Motion sensing (though I still use the L stick for most movement). I can tear shit up, but since you don't have that quick maneuver ability anymore (L stick w/o Pro Controls on), shaking off missile lock is impossible. What is everyone else using or what are you thoughts on the control options?

And yeah, I'm having constant weird mic issues with the game - Motorola h700. Dunno why.

what are the Pro controls?

Pro controls means there's no auto-horizon/balance and maybe other changes. You can fly upsidown I believe. You have to manually perform certain manuvers instead of hitting a direction on the control stick. Performing an Immelman turn is a lot harder. :)

yeah, tone down the pistol, but do something about the machine gun. Its almost useless. It shouldnt take me 4 clips and 5 minutes to kill someone with it.

I noticed yesterday that if you kneel, then the accuracy goes way up for the machine gun. Only the penitent man shall pass. :lol

So I think I've come up with the ultimate CTF strat to win nearly every game (provided you have a good team).

It requires mic's though :lol

We had a great 16 player game going last night, and what the 8 of us did was coordinate so we could run numbers quickly. We would send a few members on foot (2) over to the other base while we stayed back to defend the flag. When they get around half way, they snagged up a jeep and let me know when they got close, two of us would hop in a warhawk, snag a chaff grenade and fly over there (that way missiles pose no threat). Land immediately, drop off the passenger, and then fly back. The guy I dropped off, snags the flag and hops in the jeep with the other two people, head back to base, mission accomplished. Occasionally I'd stick around in the warhawk to "distract" anyone trying to take out the jeep, but not always (it depends on how overwhelmed the base is with attackers).

Anyone else use the binoculars? :D :D :D

I'm really loving this game.

I wish the voice chat was smarter. The game really feels best in the planes though. Its good on the ground, but the amount of love paid to the flight is immediately noticeable.

The binoculars rock but is there any indicaiton that you're about to get slammed? It seems pretty powerful. I've killed a lot of peeps with it but I only got hit by one once and I don't remember any warning signs.

Just don't do it against someone who chucks grenades or wield's a rocket launcher

There are none, :lol

Really, they aren't TOO broken, since it takes a long ass time for them to respawn, the fire time is slow, and the reload time is absolutely KILLER.

But it is the ULTIMATE stealth kill weapon. I usually stick on foot w/my team, so they go over head and in tanks / jeeps, I snag up three weapons and foot it. Sniper rifle, rocket launcher, and the 'nocs. I can take out ass loads of people. Usually you get those turret campers, they change their mind after a crazy unexpected explosion.

Then hit the mountains, snipe, move. Snipe, move. Snipe, move. generally you get one or two people smart enough to come find you with the warhawk, but you can murder them with a rocket launcher since they'll have to hover to actually shoot you. It's awesome :lol

I find myself flying upside down A LOT and can hit targets/grab power-ups surprisingly well that way. It's not worth leveling out unless you have the time. Shaking off missiles is friggen hard w/o those extra moves. Some weird use of the airbrakes and boosting seems to work sometimes.

For those who tried to run me over with a vehicle last night, don't even try it, I've learned how to jump out of the way at the last second.

Note to self: Running people over with a warhawk doesn't work too well.

Landing on them is fun :lol

I want to see how hard it is to get someone to stand on the wing of a warhawk and fly around.

I had that sort of happen, whereby I was standing on the wings of my warhawk capturing a base, and someone sneaked up and literally hijacked my hawk from beneath me. He took off, and for a second or two I was still on the wings before falling off. It would be interesting to see how long you could stay on them in a more controlled experiment, though (i.e. where the flyer just hovers up vertically).

I've seen some interesting warhawk-related stuff lately..like in the destroyed city map, seeing people try to land their warhawks on the top of the towers, sometimes succeeding, and occasionally seeing their warhawks hangin onto the edges of tower by their front landing wheel ;)

Well, I've done the hovering thing with a friend before, it works well enough if you turn off motion sensing.

Basically, we had two people on the wings, and one flying. We had each person with rocket launchers and the hawk with swarm missles. We really didn't move anywhere other than straight up, but it was still pretty fun to pick off hawks with rocket launchers!

I wonder how effective it would be to snipe people on the wings of a warhawk from distances not reachable by foot?

Certainly it would solve the mountain top problem if someone could find a way to sit on the wings while in some sort of flight. Maybe getting stuck on the tail of the plan while in a crouch or something?

A good tip for Destroyed Capital -

You know those four hollowed out towers, two in front of each main tower? The ones with a green missile pickup beneath their spire? Well the spire is concave enough underneath to fit an entire hawk into, so if you've got 4 homing missile on your tail, zip under, go into hover mode and float up - learn to do it quick enough and it's a decent way to shake people and missile off on an otherwise cover-less map.
