The Witcher 3 vs Skyrim: which did you prefer?

Also man, I keep forgetting how angry people are that Skyrim did well.

Skyrim had some charm to it, especially before you'd played it more than a dozen hours and could see all its limitations so clearly. But Witcher 3 is bigger, the world is better realized, the quests are much better, and the overall presentation, writing, voice acting and animation quality in Witcher 3 is simply in a different league.

That part at the very end of the very last expansion where Geralt
breaks the fourth wall and looks at the player with a knowing smile in his eyes
is thoroughly earned is something entirely impossible in Skyrim. I can't even remember the name or appearance of my first Skyrim character. There was nothing there to remember. Geralt of Rivia is always going to beat out Derpfuck Strongbeardson the mute obsessive-compulsive killing machine or whoever you end up playing as in an Elder Scrolls game.

Although I think Skyrim is an incredible, immersive game, I think The Witcher just set the standard for open world games. So I choose TW3.

Skyrim clicked with me so much. I know The Witcher 3 is an incredible game, but it just doesn't agree with me for some reason. I think I've found that I like my open world games made up of bigger building blocks. A little easier to digest. Witcher is so granular that it's a little overwhelming for me. But I do recognize its awesomeness.

I do hate Geralt's movement though.

The Witcher 3 and I didn't even have to think about it.
Skyrim isn't even the best TES game while TW3 might be the best RPG of all time (or close, to say the least)

The Witcher 3 > Skyrim with Mods >>>>>>>>>>>> Skyrim w/o Mods

The only things I like more about Skyrim are creating a character, collecting a bunch of random stuff for my house, and being able to switch between 1st and 3rd person.

Oooh. Um, probably... W3. The *supoib* DLC clinches it but I *loved* Skyrim, too. If this was between W3/Skyrim VS Fallout 4, F4 would get its arse handed to it.

I played Skyrim and had one of the best gaming experiences in my life. Played TW3 and forced myself to finish it. For me it's definitely Skyrim.

Witcher by a mile. Their world is believable and you knew what the overarching story is. Skyrim is like being a sandbox and nothing really matters. Right at the beginning you almost get chopped and the Redguard says, we're sorry about nearly killing you, but you're more than welcome to join us! When you do join either faction, it's pretty meaningless as is.

The Witcher 3 in every single area and I realize it came out a generation later than Skyrim but that doesn't matter as the quests are better designed, the acting is all around on another level, the voice work is great, and so on and so forth. I think the only place Skyrim can compete is the soundtrack.

Without heavy modding Skyrim is broken on so many levels, it's incredible.
Almost very vanilla system is complete and utter shit.

But once you fix most of it with mods it becomes a great game.
I like both for different reasons.
But (modded) Skyrim has a higher replay value than Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 instantly rendered every Bethesda game unplayable for me, and made me question the previous enjoyment I got from them.

I really, really enjoyed Skyrim and played it for over 200 hours with the DLC's.

It's just zero competition for The Witcher 3 though. Which isn't exactly shameful, Witcher 3 is one of the best open world RPGs ever.

I prefer The Witcher III but they do offer different types of experiences. Skyrim is more about the emergent gameplay and dynamic systems in place, as in any Bethesda game, while The Witcher III offers a more fixed RPG world, where everything in it is constructed exactly how the devs intended. I'd take the latter since I found myself being more frustrated and mostly bored than entertained by Skyrim's gameplay and design, although I should give it another shot on PC with mods. So it's possible to like both, but probably for different reasons, unless you really fall in love with Bethesda's tepid world building.

Not even in the same league. Witcher 3 is the pinnacle of what the genre has to offer today. Skyrim, although a great game in its own right, is nowhere near it. Witcher 3 is better across the board (story, gameplay, lore, world building, writing, atmosphere, graphics, sound etc.).

Skyrim has some of the best waifan mods I have ever SEEN IN MY LIFE. There is some crazy freaky shit out there. I mean, damn... But witcher 3?.....uh.....

.....

....wait where was I going with this again?

I cannot think of any way where Skyrim beats Witcher 3 for me. Pickpocketing got old pretty quick. Leveling is okay I guess.

I generally detest open world games. They often have lame story, wide barren lands and tons of shallow/unpolished features. Witcher 3 has been the sole exception so far.

I literally cannot imagine anyone saying Witcher 3 combat being boring/shallow but praise Skyrim. The combat in Skyrim is just overall piss poor and never felt good.

Oblivion...better world than Skyrim. But would I go play it now, no...it hasn't aged well lol. Skyrim got old after 60 hours for me. Same for the Witcher. Once you play "enough", you've seen it all in a sense. Idk how else to describe it. I think the reason I played more Oblivion than either of these 2 was because I was younger and haven't really developed my gaming "taste" yet.

I think the best of both worlds would benefit everyone. Witcher 3 writers + TES exploration. Then have From Software do combat. LOL

Skyrim makes TW3's mediocre combat system look like the Citizen Kane of combat systems.

Vanilla Skyrim's combat is worse than Witcher 3's combat, by far. You can probably make an argument for mods, but then again there's combat mods for Witcher 3 as well.

Given time frames Witcher 2 would be more appropriate but that wasn't open world. And arguably a better game too (liked Dark Souls best of all three 2011 RPGs though.)

I prefer Witcher 3 greatly. They scratch somewhat different itches but Witcher 3 just does so much better for what I like in RPGs.

I really like skyrim but the leveling as seems wrong. Natually doing shit in the game to progress takes wayyyy to long.

Witcher 3 wins .

Skyrim, because the action is straight forward and it lets me build my own mansion and there are tons of awesome mods available with no hassle, it's quite possibly my most played game of all time.
Witcher 3 was my GOTY last year though so it's definitely up there with the best too.

Witcher 3 obviously, but I do think CDPR obviously studied the successes and failures of Skyrim when they made W3 and owe it a debt in some ways.

TW3 ruined me as far as open world games. I made the mistake of going TW3 to Phantom Pain and couldn't stomach more than 10 hours before going back to TW3.

The attention to detail placed into every single quest is nothing short of mind blowing. I've logged over 250hrs and counting in TW3 and its expansions.

I put about 75hrs into Skyrim PS3 before the mem-leak made it unplayable. I don't buy Bethesda games now.

My pick is skyrim. I'm still waiting for witcher to click w/ me but I've sunk like 80hrs into multiple modded skyrim playthroughs. For me witcher hasn't clicked because I don't dig the combat. Which is funny because skyrim combat is floaty and terrible but w/mods it's bareable.

I've always liked creating a character and a narrative for them which is why I dig games like Elder Scrolls.

Maybe it was right place, right time but I put a hundred hours into Skyrim on 360 and I couldn't get more than a couple of hours into either Witcher game (2/3). The inventory system seemed clunky and after playing Dark Souls, The Witcher's combat just didn't ever feel good.

Witcher 3 is Skyrim with all the roughest edges sanded off, better writing, better combat, and better art.

And I like Skyrim!

This is one thing I can't agree on. A lot of The Witcher's art is actually pretty ugly. Especially creature design.

TW3 blows TES out of the water in most regards. Nonetheless Skyrim was a super fun open world game when it came out.

I bought and tried Skyrim 3 times. Sold it 3 times. Was just really boring to me. Generally, I don't really care for open world games as most of the quests feel like chores.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Witcher 3. (once I got a grasp of the combat system) Side quests never felt like sidequests and I liked exploring all the question marks on the map. Always felt worth it.

I liked TW3 but the sense of wonder in Skyrim remains unmatched to me.

Couldn't say which one I prefer since they're so different but I can say that Skyrim left a bigger mark for me then TW3.

Still have yet to play Blood and Wine though!
